A note on all the iPhone coverage

Yeah, we hear ya, we know some of you are sick of it. That’s cool, exhaustive coverage of any gadget isn’t for everybody, but instead of making a big fuss in comments why not enjoy this beautiful summer weekend? We’re not skipping over other news to cover this iPhone stuff — news is ALWAYS really slow on the weekends, and we’ve got a major product to cover the hell out of. Still, we’ll try posting more stuff to mobile to cut down on the iPhone spam. Thanks for understanding!

IPhone SF Campout: Videos of the iPhone’s Guts, Both Academic and Destructive

Filed under: Uncategorized — Brian Lam @ 10:01 pm

The first video includes an iPhone and a Hammer, and speaks for itself.
The Second video shows the iPhone for more academic reasons. Not too surprisingly, the phone has components you've seen in other handsets.

Namely: It has the same processor on the HTC Titan, Same sound quality and storage RAM as the iPod Nano. Balda Touchscreen, known for durability and quality. Bluetooth Bluecore 4 ROM chip by Marvel, same as a Blackberry Pearl. There's nothing surprising, which brings us back to the argument that design and software are the keys here.

A couple months ago, we were excited about robotic chickens; now, Sega Toys announced that they’re coming out with three new robotic animal types for their highly popular Dream Pet series: a short-haired cat, an owl, and a parrot.

I can’t wait ’til they all hit the market so I can finish building my robotic animal farm…

iPhones sold out at a few Apple stores, many AT&T stores

If you want an iPhone, you haven't gotten one yet, and you operate in slow motion, now would probably be a good time to start worrying about availability. We've been hearing wide-scale reports since yesterday from AT&T stores across the country that locations have been unable to keep the device in stock, with some selling out in a matter of minutes after launch all video game console-style. For folks within driving distance of an Apple store, that hasn't been a problem so far because Apple's own retail locations seem to have been supplied with many, many units -- and that, friends, is what's starting to change. According to Apple's iPhone locator, there are still plenty of locations with stock -- but unlike last night, it's not difficult at this point to find stores that have sold out as well. Think there's any chance Apple's gonna let the pipe run dry?

Meizu responds to iPhone launch… with more M8 pictures

Nothing really new here, just the first pictures of the latest MiniOne M8 redesign from the sides, top, bottom, and back. Sorry, we'd love to tell you when this 11.8-mm of sexy will break loose Stateside and beyond but we can't. Still, if it makes you feel any better you can always prop these pictures up next to the dubious import pricing and dates we heard about this morning. You know, with claims of releasing a game changing 3G, HSDPA with WiFi worldphone packing 16GB of flash by early 2008... isn't it about time for Meizu to get this project out of their Chinese language bulletin boards and issue an honest to goodness foreign press release? In the mean time, we'll continue to cast doubt while you go toe-to-toe with product renderings in the gallery. Oh, and before you go... it looks like an iPhone. Ha, you didn't think you'd escape this post without some kind of Apple reference did ya?

First Engadget iPhone returned

Filed under: Uncategorized — Joshua Topolsky @ 5:59 pm

Filed under:

Hot on the heels of the Engadget iPhone headcount (12, if you didn’t know), the very first Engadget iReturn has taken place. After ten and a half hours of waiting in line — but less than 24 hours of actual ownership — iPhone number one has been taken back to the store, citing “janky keyboard” and “no money for rent” as reasons behind the return. Note the look of utter shock, confusion, and hurt on the face of the Apple employee as she notified us of their 10% restocking fee (after the break).

How many iPhones did Engadget snag?

Perhaps the more important question is how many iPhones could Engadget possibly need? Well, technically we only bought the publication itself two, but that didn't stop a throng of curious Engadget writers from dropping three months' pay to play with Apple's new hotness.

Hands-on with Crystal Film for the iPhone

Filed under: Uncategorized — Chris Ziegler @ 5:16 pm

Filed under:

One of the inevitable first questions that gets asked when laying out hundreds of dollars for a device with a giant, glossy, gorgeous touchscreen is, “just how the heck am I going to protect this thing?” It turns out that the iPhone may not need any particular babying, but for the paranoid among us, Power Support is offering its “Crystal Film” through Apple stores. Ironically, Apple itself says that protective films aren’t recommended since they can interfere with the iPhone’s ability to register gestures, but sho’ nuff, walk into any brick-and-mortar Apple Store and you’re going to see these packs on the shelf. No matter how scratch-resistant it may seem, we figure there’ll be plenty of people willing to lay out the $14.95 sticker price for the marginal additional peace of mind Crystal Film offers, so we wanted to take a look at just how user-friendly the stuff is.

Apple’s in your iPhone, reading your diagnostic information

Filed under: Uncategorized — Chris Ziegler @ 4:06 pm

Rest easy. Yes, your iPhone may crash from time to time (as ours did just a few minutes ago while changing volume), but at least Apple’s gonna know about it. This is the message you get after plugging your iPhone into your comptuer when it’s packing “diagnostic information” that Cupertino wants to get its paws on. No, you don’t have to hit “Send to Apple” — but for the good of iPhone users everywhere, we might recommend it.

TU Darmstadt develops hopeful Aibo successor

Filed under: Uncategorized — Darren Murph @ 2:37 pm

It's no secret that robotic pets can bark right alongside the real deals, but unfortunately for those hoping to adopt an Aibo, the pickin's are indeed slim. While details on this one are admittedly scant, a photograph of a robotic dog prototype reportedly displays the brainchild of scientists at TU Darmstadt in Germany. The team had been working on said creation for six months prior to now, and is finally ready to present the pup to a "special audience" in a robot competition in Atlanta next week. Unfortunately, we've received no word on whether or not this canine is actually being bred for the mainstream, but we'll be sure to let you know if any litters crop up.

Line forms anew at San Francisco Apple Store

By 10:10AM local time -- just 10 minutes after opening -- this was the scene at Apple's downtown San Francisco outpost. Think of it as the "day after Christmas" effect.

iPhone doesn’t work with most 3rd party headphones

As several tipsters have pointed out, the recessed iPhone headphone port means that a lot of third party headphones don’t work properly: we’ve tested a few models already (you can see the current list after the break), but maybe you can help us out and let us know which models work / don’t work in the comments — and yes, if you have to press down on the jack to get both channels to play sound, we count that as not working. You’ll need to buy a $10 headphone adapter if you want most third party headphones to function correctly, which sounds like a great business plan to us: just break an important device function, and sell the solution for fun and profit. For now, one of the few third party ‘phones that do work are the Zune headphones.

iPhone: pottymouth friendly

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ryan Block @ 12:43 pm

Steve must have been a sailor in a former life, because it's been a while since we've seen a phone dictionary come preloaded with so many US swears. The iPhone even supports multiple forms of the mother of all curses -- truly, a versatile word for a versatile phone. Now go wash your mouth out with soap, mister.

Supports
  • F*ck
  • F*cks
  • Sh*t
  • Microsoft

Does not support
  • F*cker
  • F*cked
  • Motherf*r
  • Zune
We're sure you and your foul mouth will have plenty more words you'll want to try -- leave 'em in comments, but mind the minors, ok?

iPhone not supported under 64-bit Windows XP or Vista — oops

Filed under: Uncategorized — Thomas Ricker @ 12:26 pm

Struggling with your new iPhone on a 64-bit Windows Vista or XP system? Take solice, you’re not alone. The error message, “The software required for iPhone is not installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install iTunes again.” is Apple’s magical way of telling you that iTunes is not supported on 64-bit flavors of Microsoft’s operating systems. Yeah, we agree, they should have listed the incompatibility on the iPhone specs page under Windows System Requirements. Unfortunately for those of you new to Apple software, it’s buried in support article 301301 which states, “iTunes is currently not supported in Windows XP Professional x64 Edition or any 64-bit edition of Windows Vista.” Now you know.

[Thanks, Rishard and Andy G.]

Hands-on with Crystal Film for the iPhone

Filed under: Uncategorized — Chris Ziegler @ 12:16 pm

Installation was a breeze. Anyone used to applying products like WriteRights to their Palms, Pocket PCs, and other touchscreen devices from days of yore know that it can be a harrowing process fraught with dust particles, alignment issues, and impossible-to-remove air bubbles no matter how careful you think you’re being, so the Crystal Film is a breath of fresh air in comparison. Somehow, the film seemed to basically suck itself into place as soon as it started to touch the phone, so all we had to do was make sure it was appropriately aligned. Getting it lined up was easier than your typical screen protector thanks to the film’s cutouts for the earpiece and home button.

On our first attempt, the alignment wasn’t perfect. No biggie; Power Support recommends using cellophane tape to lift the film back off the phone, and that worked like a champ. Wash, rinse, repeat — our second attempt was much more successful. The film can be removed and reapplied repeatedly for cleaning, though we imagine that won’t be necessary in practice.

Once appiled, the film was barely noticeable to the eye (in fact, it would’ve been impossible if not for the seams around the button and earpiece). The feel of the film was almost indistinguishable from the naked screen for gesturing with our fingers, which we think is absolutely key to a product like this having any sort of commercial success.

Bottom line: probably not necessary, but if something like this helps you sleep a little easier at night, you won’t regret the purchase. The installation process won’t raise your blood pressure and once it’s on, you won’t even know it’s shielding your precious cargo from sharp baddies.

Toshiba kicks out its own 4GB microSDHC card

Filed under: Uncategorized — Darren Murph @ 11:51 am

Oh, Toshiba. Usually we wouldn't react too kindly to jumping in the game nearly half a year late, but considering just how rare these 4GB microSDHC cards still seem to be, we'll give you a pass on this one. Sure enough, Tosh is finally ready to unleash its wee 4GB microSDHC card on the world, and besides guaranteeing sustained write rates of up to 4Mbps, it also promises write speeds of nearly 6Mbps. No word on pricing details as of now, but considering that these should be hitting (a few) shelves come next month, you won't be waiting too much longer in tense anticipation.
