Black Diamond – Diamonds – Black = White Pearl

If your dreams have been haunted by visions of VIPN's $300,000 Black Diamond but the thought of mortgaging a cell phone wasn't really sitting too well with you, might we direct your attention to the Black Diamond's less-costly sibling, the White Pearl. At "just" $1,500, the White Pearl's price should be music to the ears of folks who are merely rich -- you get the same Jaren Goh design in white instead of black and you lose the diamonds, but the rest of the specs remain the same. Heck, you even still get the 2GB SD card bundled in the box. We weren't able to track down the White Pearl on VIPN's site, but if this all checks out, look for the nifty candybar to drop about the same time as its bejeweled counterpart in early 2007.

BenQ-Siemens adds trio of handsets

Filed under: 3g,BenqMobile,benq,benq mobile,benq-siemens,candybar,e71,e81,sl91,slider,umts — Chris Ziegler @ 9:43 am

In the event Europeans are still unhappy with their selection of 3G-capable devices, BenQ’s trying to come to the rescue this week, showing their UMTS SL91 slider and E81 candybar — along with the more pedestrian EDGE-only E71. All three handsets share some visual cues, sporting glossy black finishes and rounded lines, though the similarities mostly end there; potentially most interesting of the three is the SL91, a Chocolate-esque, “mysteriously opaque” device featuring the LG phone’s now-trademark disappearing navigation keys. Besides UMTS, the SL91 goes big with a 3.2-megapixel camera, QVGA display, and FM radio with RDS. One notch down the food chain is the E81, giving up some screen real estate with its 220 x 176 display and trading 3.2 megapixels for the more standard 1.3, but mercifully hanging on to the microSD slot. Finally, the EDGE-only E71 steps back up to QVGA, but the real draw here should be its “innovative non-stick coating” that promises to hide fingerprints on its shiny exterior. All three phones look to drop before the year’s out, though odds are slim Americans are invited to the party. That’s alright, BenQ; we prefer our phones good and smudged with fingerprints, anyway.

ASUS intros 2-megapixel candybar with autofocus

Filed under: Asus,AutoFocus,QuadBand,asustek,camera,cameraphone,candybar,gsm,v80 — Chris Ziegler @ 6:39 pm

After adding a slider and flip to its stable of autofocus camera phones, ASUS is turning its attention to the candybar form factor, showing the V80 last week. Other than the autofocus 2-megapixel shooter with macro, there’s not much to write home about — though the FM recorder is kinda nifty. Other features include a QR code reader, Bluetooth 1.2, 220 x 176 display, and EDGEless Class 10 GPRS. ASUS is making a big deal about the V80′s 16mm thickness, but we’re not entirely sure why, considering that Samsung’s 9.9mm D830 alleges autofocus capability just the same. No word on availability or pricing, but thanks to quadband GSM, we might just keep an eye out for this sucker stateside.

“Black Diamond” WM5 Smartphone runs $300,000

If you’re having a hard time justifying dropping a cool million on your next phone, might we turn your attention to the “Black Diamond,” brought to us by Swiss manufacturer VIPN. Penned by Singaporean designer Jaren Goh, there’s little question that the glossy black candybar is gorgeous — but whether it’s $300,000 gorgeous is another question entirely. Details are slim, but we know that the Windows Mobile 5 device should be rocking quadband GSM, WiFi, 128MB of memory with SD expansion, a 2-inch display, and a 400MHz XScale all wrapped up in titanium and diamonds. The touch sensitive keypad is Chocolate-esque, completely disappearing when not lit, while SIP is thrown in to keep your GSM usage minimum when you’re in WiFi range (not to suggest anyone owning this phone is looking to save a few bucks). If we’ve piqued your interest, it looks like you’ve got until early 2007 to save your pennies, but keep your eyes peeled — production is limited to 5 (yes, five) units.

UTStarcom joins the slim candybar game

If you're into the form factor, you don't need Bluetooth, and you're looking to save some coin, you might turn your attention to the FCC's deets on UTStarcom's GPRS1226 (or UT1200, depending on what documentation you're reading). Like the SLVR it loosely mimics, the microSD-equipped GPRS1226 emphasizes its music playback capabilities, even offering a dedicated music player button on its side. GSM 850 and 1900 support mean this thing is likely targeted at the North American market; we're not sure which carrier would offer it, but given its meager spec sheet, we're guessing you could walk away with it nearly free on contract.

LG preparing another Chocolate-like phone

Filed under: BlackLabel,black label,candybar,chocolate,fashion,kg 99,kg99,lg — Chris Ziegler @ 7:19 am

LG is really running with the checkerboard keypad theme these days as details are beginning to emerge on the KG99, a candybar with fairly obvious Chocolate roots. No word on whether the phone falls into LG’s Black Label category, but at 95 x 52 x 9.9mm, it seems chic enough for the task. Specs are unconfirmed at this point, but the phone is reported to sport triband GSM (sorry yanks, no 850), a 220 x 176 display, microSD slot, Bluetooth, and an FM radio. Now granted, as a fashion phone, we may not be the KG99′s target demographic, but the specs still feel a bit weak to us — we’re going to wait a few weeks and see what else is in the checkerboard pipeline.

Mitsubishi’s Symbian-powered D702iBCL for NTT DoCoMo

Filed under: D702iBCL,NTT DoCoMo,NttDocomo,candybar,foma,mitsubishi,ntt,smartphone,symbian — Chris Ziegler @ 8:00 am

Fashion phones not your cup of tea? Looking for something a little more business oriented perhaps? NTT DoCoMo has you covered with their D702iBCL FOMA smartphone, brought to you by the good folks at Mitsubishi. The D702iBCL sports NTT’s MOAP (Moblie Oriented Applications Platform) UI sitting atop Symbian 8.1 along with a QVGA display, all while coming in at a relatively sprightly 130 x 47 x 16.8mm and 97g. A camera is conspicuously missing, but being that this is a business phone, that’s just as well.

FCC shows its open-source side with two smartphones

Filed under: candybar,clamshell,e28,flip,hipi,linux,paragon,smartphone — Chris Ziegler @ 2:40 pm

Sure, they're common in Asia where the lack of licensing fees is a huge draw for manufacturers, but we've yet to see the promise of real, honest-to-goodness Linux smartphone action go big here in the States. A couple of Chinese firms might be looking to help us change that. E28 (yep, the name of the company is "E28") has gotten FCC blessing for its Faraday-esque candybar packing a 2 megapixel camera, MicroSD slot, touch screen, and WiFi. The "hipi" clamshell by Paragon lacks any keypad and trades the MicroSD slot for one of the MiniSD variety. Both devices appear to rock VoIP clients, as well. If E28 can lose the sickly mauve color, we'd be more than happy to review a unit. You listening, guys?

SmarTone-Vodafone launches thin Toshiba TS30

Filed under: HongKong,Toshiba,candybar,hong kong,smartone-vodafone,thin,ts30,vodafone — Chris Ziegler @ 9:44 am

9.9mm might not be close to breaking any records these days, but Toshiba’s TS30 candybar is thin enough to confortably slip into pretty much any nook or cranny you had in mind. With a QVGA display (quickly becoming par for the course in Europe and Asia), music player, MicroSD slot, and FM radio, SmarTone-Vodafone customers in Hong Kong shouldn’t find much missing when the phone hits for HK$1680 (about $215) unsubsidized. Rumor has it the tri-band GSM TS30 will eventually find its way to Taiwan and Europe, though possibly under a different moniker — but per protocol, no US launch plans are in the works.

Waterproof meets FOMA: the SO902iWP+

Filed under: NTT DoCoMo,NttDocomo,SO902iWP,candybar,foma,waterproof — Chris Ziegler @ 7:39 am

If we had a dollar for every story we've heard of a flushed cellphone, we'd have, like, ten dollars. NTT DoCoMo's new alphabet soup, the SO902iWP+, may not get you your phone back if it makes its way to your town's sewage system, but it might just be working when it finally gets fished out. Besides sporting the usual FOMA goodies like a stunning UI on a QVGA display, camera, and music player, the candybar is waterproof for up to 30 minutes in 1 meter of water. We're not sure who makes the SO902iWP+ for NTT, but since it includes both a Memory Stick Duo slot and FeliCa support, we have our guesses.

The M81: BenQ-Siemens gets in touch with its sporty side

Filed under: active,benq,benq-siemens,candybar,m81,resistant,siemens,sport — Chris Ziegler @ 12:33 pm

Apparently, the folks at BenQ are looking to make a run on Nokia’s “active lifestyle” category of phones, unleashing the shock / splash / dust-resistant M81 today in Munich. Besides the navigation (GPS module sold seperately) and weather clients, built-in flashlight, and relatively tough exterior clad in “high-quality synthetics and rubber,” not much differentiates the device from your typical midrange candybar: 900 / 1800 / 1900 GSM with EDGE data, 176 x 132 display, 1.3 megapixel camera, music player, and MicroSD slot in your choice of Graphite Black or Steel Blue. The M81 starts shipping to joggers and snowboarders in August.

Fanboy specs, drawings emerge for Motorola SCPL

What’s a lazy Friday afternoon without a bit of completely unsubstantiated rumor mongering? Sure, it’s possible that Ed Zander himself wrote this SCPL mockup on a napkin over a recent lunch, but we’re thinking it more likely the doings of a fanboy with too much time on his hands. Anyways, the specs are as set above: 0.2-inches thick (compared to the 0.27-inch chubster X820 from Samsung), QVGA display, 512MB flash memory, MicroSD slot, 3.5mm headphone jack, FM radio (pushing it), Bluetooth 2.0 and a titanium-alloy build. We’d be pretty happy with about half of that, but we’re sure this won’t be the last savory rumor to drool over before we find out for reals.

US consumers: “Give us cheap flips”

Filed under: EaseOfUse,J.d.Power,JdPower,candybar,clamshell,ease of use,flip,j.d. power,jd power — Chris Ziegler @ 6:54 pm

J.D. Power’s 2006 U.S. Wireless Mobile Phone Evaluation Study (whew) has dropped, giving us a glimpse into the mind of the average cellphone-enabled American. What have we learned? In a nutshell, we apparently love us some cheap Sanyo clamshells. Allow us to clarify: from 2004 to 2006, the average handset purchase fell from $99 to $86. Since 2002, candybars accounted for some 70% of phones sold; that’s dropped to 39% in 2006 while clamshells have skyrocketed from 7% to 58%. To a certain extent, we have the chicken-and-egg phenomenon in effect here — flip ownership has naturally risen signifcantly as attractive models (read: RAZRs) have come on the scene. Perhaps most surprising is that dark horse Sanyo ran away with the “overall customer satisfaction” title, with LG in a distant second. Satisfaction in the “phone operation” category — that is, ease of use — rose a whopping 5% across the board from last year, indicating that phones are getting simpler or users are getting smarter. Either way, we’re all for it, as long as it doesn’t lead to more people choosing ringtones in restaurants. [Warning: PDF link]

LG’s new skinny KG320 candybar

The folks at LG are no stranger to slim phones, and they look to have a winner with their new KG320. Beyond the 0.39-inch thick form factor (the same as Samsung’s recently launched T509) the LG phone features a 2.2 megapixel camera, 176 x 200 pixel screen, Bluetooth and a whole 128MB of memory. Playback isn’t bad neither, with support for MPEG4, MP3 and AAC files. It’s just a tri-band GSM unit, but the phone is headed for Europe in addition to the usual Asian targets, so here’s hoping for a US launch.

Samsung’s slim t509 gets priced at $50 on T-Mobile

If you’re looking for a slim candybar-style handset with decent data capabilities, you should definitely take a gander at T-Mobile’s Samsung t509, which just got priced at merely fifty bucks after rebates, discounts, and such. You’ll probably recall that the ~0.4-inch thick t509 is a tri-band model that also features Bluetooth and a camera with 4x zoom (whose resolution is still unspecified, which almost certainly means VGA). This model gets its Internet on through T-Mobile’s EDGE network, and also sports such amenities as a speakerphone, pre-loaded IM clients, and some kind of ringtones that must be good because their names are trademarked.

Samsung’s SGH-T509 reviewed

Filed under: candybar,cellphone,edge,mobile,slim,slvr,t-mobile,thin — Thomas Ricker @ 3:00 am

The Samsung SGH-T509 we expect to hit T-Mobile anyday now just nabbed a "very good" rating over at c|net. While that uber-thin, 0.39-inch shell might draw in the eye, in the hand it "feels fragile" (though it emerged from a couple of drop tests without any damage) and suffers from "mixed call quality." However, those good looks, a "bright vibrant" 1.8-inch TFT display, solid feature set, EDGE support, and tested 4.5 hours of talk time resulted in a 7/10 rating from the reviewer who calls the T509 "a step above" that other slim candybar, the Moto SLVR L6.

VK Mobile’s waif-like VK2020 musicphone reviewed

VK Mobile seems like a very flashy company to us, what with their fashion-over-function ethos, their, shall we
say, liberal
"borrowing" of design elements
from some of the sexier phones on the market, and who could forget the
airbrushed nude models that they employed to hawk their products at CeBIT this year? We think PC Mag would agree that
the company’s quad-band GSM VK2020 musicphone — that, like the models, we also href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2006/03/12/live-from-cebit-hands-on-with-vk-2200-4-megapixel-cameraphone-a/">spotted
at CeBIT — falls in line with this assessment, as their review highlights the handset’s RAZR- and SLVR-killing
thinness and "wow factor," but knocks it on nearly every aspect important to people who actually like their
stuff to function properly. Among the laundry list of flaws reported are this model’s small, dim screen, barely
acceptable MP3 and call audio quality, lack of even EDGE-speed data, sub-four-hour battery life, limited filetype
support, and flaky Bluetooth connection. Still, PC Mag’s Sascha makes a good point when he compares the VK2020 to a hot
date, in that you’re a lot more likely to accept its faults just because it looks so damn good. If you’re the type that
rushed out to buy LG’s silly href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2006/03/16/lgs-style-i-hands-full-headset/">Style-i non-hands-free, non-headset
Bluetooth headset when it href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2006/04/26/lgs-style-i-hands-free-headset-available-from-verizon/">became available
from Verizon this week, then you’ll probably be just fine with forking over $400 to Dynamism in order to sport one
of today’s hotter-looking imports.

Philips Xenium 9@9t candybar

Filed under: Xenium9@9t,candybar,gsm,handset,philips,phone,touchscreen,xenium 9@9t — Paul Miller @ 12:24 pm

The Philips Xenium 9@9 series is traditionally a rather low-end group of candybar phones, but this new 9@9t isn't looking too bad. Sure, the miniSD slot, MP3 playback and 1.3 megapixel camera are fairly standard by now, but the phone features some sort of touchscreen, along with touting 30 days of standby -- if the text on the screen can be believed. The slim phone is also supposed to be tri-band GSM, but that's about all we have for info right now.

Samsung’s SGH-T509 gets official for US T-Mobile launch

Filed under: Bluetooth,Samsung,candybar,cellphone,edge,phone,sgh-t509,slim,t-mobile,t509 — Paul Miller @ 4:45 am

Filed under:

That 0.39-inch thick SGH-T509 phone from Samsung -- the slimmest candybar phone so far announced for the US -- just got confirmed today, and should be available in the states this May. The phone features EDGE data, Bluetooth 1.2 connectivity, and a camera of undetermined resolution. Samsung actually isn't spilling much info on this phone for as hyped up about it as they are in their PR. We still know barely more than we skimmed off the FCC site in March, but it does look like this phone will be making its way to T-Mobile users. Catherine Zeta-Jones will be so proud.

Samsung’s 6.9mm SGH-X820 reviewed

We’d generally expect that you’re going to give up some functionality, usability, or both when attempting to cram a phone’s worth of electronic wizardry into a 6.9mm-thick package. In testing Samsung’s X820, though, phoneArena found otherwise — not only is the phone’s screen surprisingly bright (though impossible to read in direct sunlight) and the speakerphone loud and clear, but the keypad apparently provides some solid tactile feedback, too. Menus lagged a bit during normal operation, but frankly, we’ve experienced the same phenomenon in much thicker phones, so we can’t much fault the X820 for that; now if they’d only throw in a little GSM 850 action, we might be willing to give this thing a ringing endorsement ourselves.

The VK-X200: VK Mobile’s swan song?

Filed under: SkTelecom,VkMobile,candybar,sk telecom,slim,thin,vk,vk mobile,vk-x200 — Chris Ziegler @ 9:01 pm

As a phone manufacturer, it could be argued that one of the first steps you’d better take to get yourself out from under the financial gun is to release some quality products. That’s exactly what VK Mobile looks to be doing here — or trying to do, anyway — in offering the VK-X200 for Korea’s SK Telecom. The smart-looking X200 clocks in at 9.9mm, slim by all but the most extreme standards, and apparently rocks a 2-megapixel cam and media player. Good luck to ya, VK; we hope this thing sells like hotcakes.

Samsung’s X820 + 3G = SGH-Z370

Filed under: 3g,Samsung,candybar,sgh-x820,sgh-z370,thin,umts,x820,z370 — Chris Ziegler @ 9:01 pm

We’re always willing to sacrifice a couple millimeters to add 3G data to our handset, particularly when said handset clocks in at a positively anorexic 6.9mm thick. Samsung’s hoping its European customers agree, taking their paper-thin X820, adding UMTS, and rechristening it the SGH-Z370. Besides the addition of some wicked fast data, the Z370 throws in a microSD slot for good measure, all while adding a mere 1.5mm to the thickness of the phone — that still leaves it a good 2.6mm thinner than a SLVR, for the record. We don’t expect the Z370 to come in an American flavor, but for what it’s worth, it did just hop the FCC fence this week.

[Thanks, TC]

O2′s “Ice” first European handset with uiOne

Sprint’s been working with Qualcomm on uiOne-enabled handsets for the better part of a year now (you know, Qualcomm’s solution for skinning handsets’ user interfaces with themes) but Europe’s been left out of the fun — until now, that is. Coming it at a fairly reasonable £0 on contract, O2′s clever looking “Ice” candybar isn’t exactly high end, but it still manages to pack a reasonable punch with 3G data, Bluetooth, video and music players, and microSD expansion. It seems to lack GSM 850, but if cheap 3G suits your fancy and you’ve always wanted that, uh, “tropical look” in your phone’s menus, the Ice might be right up your alley; it’s available now on O2′s site.

The other Palm OS smartphone: GSPDA’s Xplore M70

Filed under: 5.4,GroupSensePda,PalmOs,Xplore,candybar,garnet,group sense pda,gspda,m70,palm os — Chris Ziegler @ 9:01 pm

It weirds us out a bit these days to see a Palm OS smartphone that doesn’t share the classic Treo look, but sure enough, Group Sense PDA is back at it with another Palm OS 5.4-based handset, the Xplore M70. We’re guessing we’re not going to see it in these parts any time soon — the QWERTY-less device sports Chinese input and lacks GSM 850 — but for the good folks that get a crack at buying one, you can expect a 220 x 176 display, 1.3-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, good ol’ fashioned SD expansion, and “exciting Palm games.” Data tops out at Class 10 GPRS, but you know, with those exciting Palm games, you may just forget to download your email anyway.
