Paragon shows dual-mode “hipi-2200″ Smartphone

We’re, like, so over flush metal keypads, but we’re going to let it slide just this once. Looking to bring a little more spit and polish than the original dual-mode hipi before it, Paragon Wireless’ new hipi-2200 ups the ante with the inclusion of Windows Mobile 5 — in a far more refined-looking package, to boot. With the exception of the lack of 3G (or even EDGE, for that matter) and the pedestrian 220 x 176 display, the spec sheet reads like a dream come true for Windows Mobile fans: 2-megapixel cam, microSD expansion, quadband GSM, SIP-based VoIP with seamless handoff, and a claimed 100 hours of standby with both GSM and WiFI radios turned on. Best of all, Paragon says the hipi-2200 is FCC certified, making a US release at least plausible. Likely? No, but we can dare to dream.

The combat-ready Motorola i615 for Nextel

Nextel’s always seemed to be a solid choice for those whose lot in life involves inflicting brutal damage to their phones. The trend continues with the military-spec i615, a candybar (though the term doesn’t really seem to do this thing justice) that makes up in ruggedness what it lacks in appearance. It comes packing Bluetooth, a speakerphone, and what appears to be a pretty healthy-sized display, but lacks Direct Talk for off-network walkie talkie action. The i615 can be had immediately (before you go and break another handset) for $250 on contract after discounts.

Philips’ forgettable S660 candybar

We wanted to give this thing a chance, we really did — but the unforgivable GSM 900 / 1800 dual-band GSM radio was the final nail in the coffin for us. Don’t get us wrong, Philips’ new S660 might go on to make quite a splash in the international low-end market, but without support for any North American band, US consumers looking for a solid, inexpensive handset had best not get too attached. The S660 lacks any sort of expandability and brings a mere 128 x 128 display and VGA cam to the table, but offers a surprisingly solid (for its class) 128MB of built-in storage. Its 18mm of thickness is also bit pudgy by 2006 standards, but the lack of GSM 850 or 1900 is an error far more grave in our books.

Cingular (finally) adds Sony Ericsson W810i

Filed under: SonyEricsson,candybar,cingular,music,se,sony ericsson,w810,w810i,walkman — Chris Ziegler @ 9:15 am

We know this one’s been in the oven for a while, but according to the good folks at HowardForums, Cingular’s finally seen fit to release the Sony Ericsson W810i — and just in time, if we do say so ourselves — though availability seems to be initially limited to brick-and-mortar stores. As a refresher, the brightly-colored candybar does the Walkman thing in style, packing a 2-megapixel camera, that Memory Stick Duo slot we all love to hate, and the obligatory quad-band GSM radio with EDGE; better yet, its predecessors’ joystick is mercifully replaced with a more usable d-pad. Just add A2DP and you’ve got yourselves a winner, guys.

Pantech C120 heads to Cingular prepaid

Filed under: c120,candybar,cingular,gophone,pantech,pg-c120,pre-paid,prepaid — Chris Ziegler @ 9:15 am

In case you haven’t heard, Cingular has an official corporate policy of not talking to us (no, seriously) so forgive us in taking a few days to gather all the requisite details of Pantech’s new C120 for Cingular’s GoPhone prepaid service. The diminutive candybar serves as Pantech’s followup to the crazy-small C300 clamshell; like the C300, it’s initially available exclusively through GoPhone, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see it head over to postpaid before terribly long. Considering the handset moves for $140 contract-free, the C120 holds its own with a 128 x 128 color display, speakerphone, and VGA cam, but with a mere 2.5MB of memory on board, don’t expect to fill ‘er up with your favorite tunes.

“Krma” from izenMobile blurs Pocket PC / Smartphone lines

San Diego-based izenMobile (no, we haven’t heard of them either) looks to take a page from the ASUS P525′s book, combining a numeric keypad with Windows Mobile’s Pocket PC Phone Edition platform to create the “Krma,” a distinctly Motorola-esque name, if we do say so ourselves. We don’t have much to go on other than the crappy press shot (above) and a somewhat vague press release, which falls short on detailing the Krma’s specs but promises that the handset is the first of several (as many as seven) to be released over the coming year. izenMobile says they’ll be initially targeting businesses in North and South America with their devices, but if the spec sheet fills the bill and actual Krma is as hot as the picture seems to indicate, we anticipate a few individuals trying to get in on the action.

Motorola MOTOFONE F3 gets by FCC

Filed under: LowCost,candybar,f3,fcc,low cost,low-cost,moto,motofone,motorola,scpl — Chris Ziegler @ 9:15 am

The FCC is many things to many people, but for us, it’s a library and an informant. In its latter capacity, the agency has scooped literally dozens upon dozens of phones for us; in its former, it serves as one of the most comprehensive sources of mobile phone user’s manuals on the ‘net. They’re putting on their starched, three-piece suits and playing their librarian role this time around, releasing a cornucopia of PDFs relating to Motorola’s low-cost MOTOFONE F3. The draft manual is a breath of fresh air for the manual haters among us — we know who you are — if it carries through to production in its current form, bearing just 10 (yes, ten) panels of important information on what appears to be a foldable pamphlet. Ultra low-end or not, we have to admit an irrational excitement is building around Engadget HQ to play around with this thing — especially if the brief documentation suggests it’s going to take like 90 seconds to learn.
