Samsung Rocks the SPH-A640

Sprint has unveiled its latest phone in their arsenal of Samsung handhelds. This thing is cheap, has nice features and won't sleep with your mother. For a mere $50 this phone will give you a wireless backup utility, Sprint PCS Ready Link (or walkie-talkie functionality), Bluetooth, VGA camera, Sprint PCS Vision Multimedia and all wrapped in a cute, black case.

All-in-all it doesn't seem like that bad a phone. It is far superior than the freebie phones that carriers give out but still won't break the bank with the $50 price tag—with two year contract, of course. It is kind of nice to see Samsung pushing some lower end phones compared to all of the other high end uber phones that they have been hocking lately.

Motorola ic502 Gets FCC Approval

Filed under: Cellphones — Gizmodo @ 2:03 pm

ic502.jpgThe Motorola ic502, which is poised to become the first iDEN/CDMA dual mode cellphone, just received approval from the FCC, paving the way for its introduction on Sprint. Also known as the RACER, the ic502 supports the different mobile technologies to varying degress; iDEN support is limited to dispatch only, making calling this a dual mode cellphone a bit of a stretch.

Aside from its support, however limited, of CDMA and iDEN, the ic502 also features that not-annoying-at-all walkie-talkie mode, whose telltale beeps have driven Americans mad for years now, speakerphone and other standard features. You won’t, however, find EVDO support, so it’s not exactly the most advanced phone on the market. Price and release date are still up in the air.

Cingular LG CG225 Low End Phone Available Now

Filed under: Cellphones — Gizmodo @ 6:05 pm

cingularlgcg225.jpgSince most our readers are divided between having a phone that does everything—a Windows Mobile 5 device—and a low end phone that just calls and does little else, here’s Cingular’s newest entry-level clamshell.

The LGCG225 has Quad-band GSM, a VGA camera, IM and speakerphone. Yeah, not much else other than dual color screens on the inside and outside. It’s free with 2-year contract and you can buy it now. Doesn’t look half bad, really.

Qtek 8500/Dopod S300/HTC Star Trek Reviewed (Verdict: Star-tastic)

Filed under: Cellphones — Gizmodo @ 5:27 pm

star_trek_htc.jpgWhat do you get when you cram a Windows Mobile Smartphone into a RAZR form factor? Surprisingly, not a dumbed down phone. The Qtek 8500 has the WM5 Smartphone OS and dimension-wise, is only slightly longer than the RAZR when opened. When it's closed, they're practically identical.

The phone has all the WM5 smartphone features—push email, WM apps like Internet Explorer, MSN, Windows Media Player, and various other apps that are downloadable off the net. The processor is only an OMAP 195MHz, but surprisingly all the menus and applications are fairly fast, except when too many things are open at once.

Reception is great, but the battery life will only last one day of use with emailing, surfing and music playback. That's not any worse than some other similarly sized phones, but it does mean you'll have to charge the phone every day. Overall, the Qtek 8500 is great if you want a Windows Mobile Smartphone but don't need a QWERTY capable device.

Motorola Capri, a.k.a. the RAZR slider, previewed

Filed under:

The guys over at PhoneScoop have sure made the site live up to its name today: not only did they get some serious hands-on time with Motorola’s upcoming RAZR slider — codenamed Capri — they also got to preview the next version of Moto’s much-maligned Synergy UI that will show up in such models as the Canary and the SCPL. At least on paper, the Capri seems to offer a very compelling feature set that will probably attract anyone into the RAZR lifestyle- you’re getting a model only slightly thicker and heavier than its clamshell counterpart, but which sports a 2.0 megapixel camera, A2DP-capable Bluetooth, and what sounds like a greatly improved user interface. Especially noteworthy in the overhauled Synergy is an address book that seems to work much more intuitively than past iterations (remember the one on the StarTAC?), allowing you to organize entries by name and search for contacts using multiple letters. Although Phone Scoop was only testing a pre-production model, they have identified some potential problems to watch out for on the final version, such as the unusually crappy quality of what should be a decent camera, and most importantly, a spring-assisted slider that’s difficult to activate due to the raised antenna bulge so familiar to RAZR owners. Click on if you want to peep a few more snaps, but you’re really doing yourself a disservice if you don’t head over to PhoneScoop for the full gallery and a very thorough write-up…

HTC self-brands Hermes (TyTN) and Breeze (MTeoR)

Filed under:

It's been a crazy few years for the once unknown Taiwanese OEM known as High Tech Computer. Although still not a household name like Sony or Samsung, HTC has leveraged its strong ties with Microsoft to offer tantalizing products that have made us early-adopters stand up and take notice, and now the company feels that it's in a strong enough market position to ditch the Qtek brand and begin selling phones under its own name. The Qtek phase-out was announced as part of HTC's official unveiling of the 3G Hermes Windows Mobile Pocket PC phone -- now known as the TyTN -- as well as the compact, UMTS-capable Breeze smartphone -- which is now called the MTeoR (yeah, we're noticing a MOTO-like naming trend too; see the rebadged STRTrk for further proof). In announcing July's European launch of these self-branded handsets, HTC reemphasized its dedication to the many carriers selling its products under their own names, but this development certainly bodes well for the company's overall name-recognition; imagine, instead of lying and telling people we have a Treo because Sprint-branded-UTStarcomm-PPC-6700-based-on-the-HTC-Apache sounds so nerdy, we may one day be able to proudly proclaim "Oh, it's an HTC." Cingular Auctions American Idol -Themed Samsung D807s Signed By Bon Jovi and Ryan Seacrest

Filed under: Cellphones — Gizmodo @ 7:02 pm

cingularidol.pngLet’s see, open up our filing cabinet…search for the L’s…ah, there it is, “lame”. We’re filing this under lame.

The concept definitely isn’t lame though. Cingular’s auctioning off 10 phones to benefit Bon Jovi’s charities through Samsung’s “Four Season of Hope” program. Their phones, however, could use some work. They took perfectly nice Samsung D807s, let an autistic 4th grader Elmer’s Glue sequins all over the back, and then had Ryan “I made out with Teri Hatcher” Seacrest sign it.

Do you think the people who fall into the Bon Jovi + American Idol + Ryan Seacrest fanbase has thousands to plop down for a charity phone? Probably not. Here’s hoping the kids get something nice out of this.

Samsung X830 Music Phone

Filed under: Cellphones — Gizmodo @ 4:15 pm

samsungx830.jpgThe Samsung X830 is the GSM version of the Korean SPH-S4300, which was released in Korea earlier this year. And you know what GSM means, right? You can use it in the US!

The X830 is a slider phone that has its number keys arranged in two columns instead of three like normal phones. That means it’s skinnier and easier to hold, like a stick. The Korean version has 1GB of internal memory, but idnes.cz says this only has 82MB. We’ll try and clear this up.

The phone has a 128×220 screen and supports MP3, WMA, OGG, DCF, and SMP. There’s a 1.3 megapixel camera and there’s no info yet on pricing or availability.

t609.jpgEveryone's favorite wireless carrier T-Mobile is launching three Samsung phones that are aimed for the everyday user, rather than people with money burning a hole in their pocket. The three models—the t609, the t209 and the t319—won't knock your socks off with their features, though they're all compatible with Yahoo!, AIM and ICQ instant messenger services, but what do you expect with these types of budget cellphones?

The most advanced of the three, the t609, has a 1.3 megapixel camera, an MP3 player and a microSD card slot for your media. It also has Bluetooth, allowing both wireless headset connection and contact synchronization. It's $150 after rebate.

The t319 is one notch down and its VGA camera has a 4x digital zoom and a Web browser. Basic, yes, but it'll only set you back $40 with rebate.

Lastly, the bare bones t209...well, it's a cellphone. It only supports the most basic of features, such as SMS text messaging, but's its $20 price tag after rebate might do well for people just looking to have a cellphone because society now dictates that we all have one.

Citizen readies VIRT Bluetooth watch for release

Filed under:

Ever since we saw Seiko’s CPC TR-006 prototype watch with built-in Bluetooth, we’ve been anxiously waiting for a piece of stylish wristwear that also makes a fuss when we get a phone call, and displays Caller ID info so our smartphone never has to leave its belt holster. Well our long wait will finally be over on July 7th, but in a cruel twist of fate, instead of that not-unfashionable Seiko, the first Bluetooth watch to market will be a rather hideous looking model from Citizen with a tiny screen and gaudy blue buttons marring the face. Besides sporting that disaster of a design, though, the W700 VIRT Bluetooth watch doesn’t sound like it’s all that uncomfortable to wear, with its sub-two-ounce weight paling in comparison to the those G-Shock shackles some people weigh down their arms with. Plus, you get a pretty decent five-day battery life, SPOT-like charging dock, and best of all– at least for cellphone addicts — an optional alert for notifying you if your phone ever travels a potentially-traumatizing distance from your person. Only 5,000 of these pieces will be sold during the initial rollout, but even if they’re offered at a very reasonable price (which we highly doubt), sales will probably be limited to only the geekiest most hardcore early-adopters.

Pet Translating Cellphone Service

Filed under: Cellphones — Gizmodo @ 12:37 pm

dog%20translate.jpgSK Telecom has ignored the ideas of giving cellphones the ability to better understand humans and jumped directly to animals. They have introduced the premium pet translating service. It is very simple, surprisingly. The owner will input the age, sex and type of pet into the mobile phone. Then a call is placed to the pet translating service center which goes directly to a voicemail. Get the pet to bark, meow, squak or moo for 10 seconds and then the pet translating service will provide information about the current physical state of the pet.

The fun doesn't stop there. The service center has the uncanny ability to backwards translate. Ever want to call your dog a whore? The service center can translate your obscenities into the language (??) of 55 different dog breeds.

The headsets are 9 grams and cost $70, and look quite nice—something akin to an oversized earring. The best part? They got her to do a TV ad for the phones/headset. Feast your peepers on the ad.

BenQ-Siemens A58 and A38 Economy Phones

Filed under: Cellphones — Gizmodo @ 5:36 pm

benqa58.jpgBenQ-Siemens released two lower end phones, one for business customers and one for the cost conscious.

The A58 has a sleek black finish, with no camera, making it suitable for sensitive business environments. This phone comes with 6.5 MB of built in memory for taking up to 60 minutes of dictation. Syncing contacts and settings are easy with the RF connector and serial interface.

The A38 is a consumer phone that looks a bit sportier, but has a tiny tiny screen and next to no features. Polyphonic ringtones, an alarm clock, calendar, and calculator reminds us of what life was like back in 1999.

NYPD marking iPods, phones to aid in theft recovery

Myth or not, the story that muggers are specifically targeting folks with iPods has gotten a fair amount of press since it was first reported, and has convinced at least one police department to make a rather half-hearted attempt at returning peace of mind to the city's subway commuters. For the past three months, New York City cops have been offering iPod and other portable device owners a way to "register" their gear -- wherein the officers mark your hardware with invisible ink and copy down the serial number -- in order to provide victims with a slim but tangible chance of recovery. The two-pronged approach ensures that even if thieves figure out a way to wash off the ink. which is only visible under infrared lighting, they may not be wise enough to file off the serial numbers as well. So far, over 2,000 gadgets have been marked at Transit Bureau offices and tables located around the subway system, although the program has yet to help any victims recover their stolen goods, so it's probably not a bad idea to continue sporting your Thomas Pink tie.

LG MG220: Good for Hobos

Filed under: Cellphones — Gizmodo @ 11:18 am

MG220_persp_l-thumb.jpgLG is releasing the MG220 to the U.S. market soon. This is a no-frills phone that will be great for the people wanting just a phone. It does include a weak camera that can only take pictures up to 640×480. Besides that there isn’t much else to this phone. Internal LCD, external LCD, quick-dial, alarm clock, calendar, blah, blah. With such a short feature list, this phone is bound to be cheap and hobos sure do love things that are cheap.

Virgin Launches “SugarMama”: Watch Videos, Call People Free

Filed under: Cellphones — Gizmodo @ 9:27 am

 - GizmodoYou've got to hand it to Virgin. They've brought pay-as-you-go cellular billing to a country where no one thought it would take off. Kudos. Now they want to give you free airtime for watching web commercials. Seems fair.

There are a number of services that have been trying to pull something like this off, nothing that is still clearly a contender in the pay-as-you-go space, but let's see how Virgin does it, shall we? I'd watch all kinds of web junk—Virgin is working with XBox, Mountain Dew, and Truth to supply content—and it seems like a painless way to get free minutes. In fact, if I could get 15 minutes of my life back for having watched the Origami videos, I'd be a happy man.

Verizon Releases GPS-Like Services

Filed under: Cellphones — Gizmodo @ 5:10 pm

verizonwireless.jpgIf you're on Verizon and don't want to splurge on a full-blown GPS device, Verizon has a few services that may meet you halfway.

The VZ Navigator service gives you directions, like a regular GPS, and lets you search 14 million locations. Unfortunately this is only available on the LG VX9800, the RAZR and the Motorola V325. Avalable for $2.99 a day or $9.99 a month.

The MG FuelFinder that lets you know where the cheapest gas stations are near your location. $1.99 a month or $5 for the Wireless Mobile Web version.

Vindigo City Guide is a guide for restaurants and other fun things to do in the city. $2.99 a month for this one.

Roadside Assistance from GE Motor Club gets you towing, unlocking, jump-starts and flat tire replacement. This is $3 a month.

Not quite GPS, but not too shabby either. Definitely useful if you're on the road and need help getting to where you're going, or if you're visiting a new city and want to see the sights.

Cambodia Bans 3G Phones, Blames Porn

Filed under: Cellphones — Gizmodo @ 12:22 pm

3g-button_c_300.jpgWhat do you do when you’re the Prime Minister of an entire country and your wife looks at porn? Make the entire country pay for it! Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen’s wife and friends “unexpectedly” received pornography on their 3G mobile phones. Sen got word of this and contacted the Minister of Telecommunication to halt the use of 3G mobile phones entirely.

There are a couple of problems with this. In Cambodia, very few people can afford 3G phones and service to begin with. And secondly, when was porn ever a bad thing?

Lose Your Money Easier with Mobile Gambling from Las Vegas Sands

Filed under: Cellphones — Gizmodo @ 11:40 am

mobile-gambling-lg.jpgThe Las Vegas Sands Corporation is going to be the first Las Vegas hotel company to use mobile gambling in their casinos. The Venetian will be the first casino to ustilize these devices. They will allow persons to play blackjack, roulette, poker and slots for real money on a mobile platform. The gambling devices will be provided by the hotel, but there is a bit of a catch. The Nevada Gaming Commission regulations state that mobile gambling can only take place in public areas of the casino—not in hotel rooms or other private areas. A field trial will begin in the coming months with a full roll-out later this year or early 2007.
