Verizon’s Chocolate site goes live

In what's likely the first salvo of a forthcoming big-ass marketing blitz, Verizon has gone live with its site promoting the VX8500, their carrier-exclusive rendition of LG's KG800 "Chocolate" phone. The first Chocolate and its siblings are fairly ubiquitous now in Europe and Asia, but we've yet to see any of them stateside, so Verizon would probably like nothing more than to see the VX8500 spark RAZR-like pandemonium when it drops in the next few months. The site's being coy about specs for now -- in fact, the only thing you can do is look at the phone and sign up for a release notification -- but as we previously reported, the phone looks to be packing a 1.3 megapixel camera, microSD slot, and a handful of physical changes (like the circular d-pad) that should make it more music-friendly than the original.

LG VX-8500 Chocolate to Verizon: Confirmed

chocolateverizon.JPGEven though I blasted Verizon earlier today, I am happy to announce that they will be officially carrying the line of LG Chocolate phones that have been making waves overseas.

The Verizon LG Chocolate page doesn't have much information besides a nifty interactive rotatey phone model and a "Tell me when it is available" link, but a previous rumor about the Verizon availability suggested an October 7 release. Given that there is already a product/teaser page up for this phone, lets hope it is sooner. Thanks, Chris.

Edit: We got a hot tip straight from an insider's mouth. The anonymous tipster dropped a solid date, August 7. Be prepared, be very prepared. Thanks, T.

The Boy Genius Report: VX9900 and Pantech 820 PPC due September

Field report tidbits from Engadget’s mobile insider, the Boy Genius.

The Boy Genius dropped another one on us folks, check out this excerpt from a recent Verizon product timeline. Pantech will be launching a Windows Mobile 5 clamshell device — running Pocket PC, suprisingly — come September 4th, the PN-820 we saw in the FCC. That should also be the same day they launch the VX9900, also spotted in the FCC, “big brother to the VX9800 [aka the V] hybrid device with a thinner, sleeker look and feel.” Amen to that, because our major complaints with the V had to do with its thickness and unappealing looks. Oh, and to top it off the LG VX8500 Chocolate phone will apparently have Verizon exclusivity for the life of the handset in the US — though we’re not necessarily sure if that means Chocolate phone exclusivity, or merely CDMA Chocolate. Stay tuned.

LG preparing another Chocolate-like phone

Filed under: BlackLabel,black label,candybar,chocolate,fashion,kg 99,kg99,lg — Chris Ziegler @ 7:19 am

LG is really running with the checkerboard keypad theme these days as details are beginning to emerge on the KG99, a candybar with fairly obvious Chocolate roots. No word on whether the phone falls into LG’s Black Label category, but at 95 x 52 x 9.9mm, it seems chic enough for the task. Specs are unconfirmed at this point, but the phone is reported to sport triband GSM (sorry yanks, no 850), a 220 x 176 display, microSD slot, Bluetooth, and an FM radio. Now granted, as a fashion phone, we may not be the KG99′s target demographic, but the specs still feel a bit weak to us — we’re going to wait a few weeks and see what else is in the checkerboard pipeline.

BlueBird BM-300, Looks Chocolatey

PIDION_DMB_1.jpgThis smooth, black finish was coined as “chocolate” and made mainsteam when LG launched lines of chocolate phones that have the same look. Blue Bird is continuing with this popular reverse-iPod design with their BM-300 PMP. This device has a nice spec sheet that includes T-DMB, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, expandable memory, etc. It is powered by an Intel Bulverde 520Mhz processor, touchscreen and Windows Mobile 5.0. Slim, small, pretty and should be available in Korea later this fall.

Unboxing the Chocolate

Ah, what could be better than a good, old fashioned unboxing? Not a lot, and in today’s episode we’d like to introduce you to the packaging and subsequent de-packaging of an LG KG800 Chocolate phone, courtesy of MobileBurn’s Brad Kellett. It’s only a few short, beautiful pictures, but because the likelihood of your having one in the States is so low, we’d like to show you how LG turned it out. (Hint: they did well.) Enjoy.

LG’s Chocolate KG810 now official

We’ve seen this phone floating around recently, and now LG has officially launched the KG810, a clamshell in the mold of their sought-after KG800 Chocolate slider. When we skim the spec sheet, we can’t find much to complain about — quad-band GSM, 128MB of internal flash, 1.3 megapixel camera, built-in FM tuner, and of course the heat-sensitive controls made famous by the Chocolate. According to Digital-lifestyles.info, LG is curiously insisting that the KG810 is not a member of their recently-launched “Black Label” fashion series, of which the KG800 is the founding device, but we like this diminutive flip just the same. No word on a US launch, but we can lust from afar.

More sweet chocolate from LG: the “Black Label II”

LG just unveiled the next generation of its popular "Chocolate" phone at the recent Expo Comm Wireless Korea 2006, and it seems to maintain the same features and minimalist elegance as its predecessor in a slightly thicker package (16.5-millimeters versus the original's 15.3). Also called the "Black Label II" or by its model number, KV6000, this handset is primarily targeted at the fashion-conscious crowd who also want to snap a pic or rock out to tunes once in awhile, letting them load the 512MB of memory with up to 120 MP3 tracks. Starting price for this newest bit of Chocolate is around $530, but it will probably only be seen on the streets of Seoul for the time being.

Hands-on with the KG800 (Chocolate) and Dopod S300 (Star Trek)

Good times can be had over at our sister site, Engadget Chinese, which has managed some alone time with two recent releases, the LG KG800 Chocolate and Dopod S300 HTC Star Trek. Both phones are plenty sexy in their own way, with the KG800's obvious aesthetics leading the charge, but the S300's ability to pack in all that Windows Mobile goodness in such a small package earning it plenty of kudos as well. Decisions, decisions.

LG’s Chocolate phone on sale in China for $495

Yeah ok, it’s not exactly shipping in the US yet, but it’s still good to know that the LG
“Chocolate” phone has left South Korea and is finally dancing on the international stage with the intent of
kicking it live in the West
sometime after May
. Turned-out in a tri-band GSM flavour for China (a CDMA version is also produced), this 0.6-inch
sugary sweet slider brings a 2-inch QVGA display, 512MB of memory, and 1.3 megapixel cam for a cool fistful of
Benjamins. Of course, now that these are in the wild, we fully expect a “ href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2006/04/11/rims-blackberry-to-battle-redberry-clone-in-china/">red
chocolate” knockoff to drop in a few months for about half the price.

Pink Chocolate? LG says yes

Filed under: PinkChocolate,chocolate,lg,lg-sv590,pink,pink chocolate,qvga — Paul Miller @ 7:59 am

LG has
thoroughly trashed their black and href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2006/02/28/white-chocolate-phone-from-lg/">white "chocolate" metaphor
with their new pink LG Chocolate, the LG-SV590. With 350,000 of the slim-slider Chocolate phones sold so far, it’s hard
to fault LG for releasing the phone in a new color, but we were kind of digging the whole edible motif. No matter, the
phone still has its 2-inch QVGA screen, 512MB of memory, and LG even has a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2006/03/22/lgs-chocolate-phone-coming-to-the-us/">US version in the works.

LG VX8600, VX9900 show signs of life on Verizon site

Filed under: VerizonWireless,chocolate,lg,verizon,verizon wireless,vx8600,vx9900,vzw — Chris Ziegler @ 9:23 pm

Spelunking through the nooks and crannies of carriers’ websites often yield tidbits on upcoming phones; Verizon’s Backup Assistant page is doing the honors today, shedding light on a couple of LGs that’ll be dropping shortly. First up is the “big brother to the VX9800,” the VX9900, a phone our own Boy Genius told us would be dropping in September — the 4th to be exact, if Verizon’s documentation is to be trusted. Next is the VX8600, which we believe will expand LG’s Chocolate franchise in the US to the clamshell form factor. Of course, some of us are still waiting for even a single GSM Chocolate to officially launch stateside, but more power to our CDMA compadres for scoring two of ‘em.

Verizon’s LG VX8600 Chocolate flip in the wild

The finer visual details of the VX8500′s hinged sibling might remain unclear with these blur-tastic shots, but we think we can see enough here to question whether Verizon and LG are taking the “Chocolate” theme a smidge far. Its glossy exterior is presumably graced with the trademark touch-sensitive, disappearing music controls, but is this not a rather plain looking phone when you pop ‘er open? Gone is the spiffy checkerboard that graced its international cousin, the KG810, leaving a perfectly typical midrange-looking handset in its place. Our hats remain off to Verizon for bringing the Chocolate series stateside, but somehow, something appears to have been lost in the translation.

LG’s LF1300 slider for Korea

Filed under: LgTelecom,chocolate,lf1200,lf1300,lg,lg telecom,slider — Chris Ziegler @ 9:23 pm

LG seems to be experimenting with every conceivable d-pad configuration lately, and their new LF1300 certainly hasn’t been spared. The slider, destined for Korea’s LG Telecom (yeah, that LG Telecom), packs the typical QVGA display, 1.3-megapixel shooter, Bluetooth, consumer IR, and a microSD slot into 16.9mm of white Chocolatey goodness — certainly not bleeding-edge by Korean standards, but the middling handset has managed to outdo the only Chocolate that Americans have been able to get their hands on. Thus far, anyway.

The last LG VX8500 mini-review you’ll ever read

Filed under: VerizonWireless,chocolate,lg,review,slider,verizon,verizon wireless,vx8500,vzw — Chris Ziegler @ 9:23 pm

With their uncharacteristically intensive marketing campaign over the last month focusing on this phone alone, it’s readily apparent that Verizon has high hopes their VX8500 “Chocolate” slider is ready to take the torch from Motorola’s original V3 RAZR as the must-have midrange handset for the masses. To get anywhere close to that lofty goal, though, the phone requires more than a slick ad blitz. Basic functionality and practicality obviously have to be there, but what’s more, it needs a gizmo appeal that’ll attract the casual gearheads (assuming the more serious ones have already been ceded to the smartphone market) and a fashion sense — a mystique, if you will — that naturally draws in users and observers alike.

Let’s tackle these areas one at a time. First, basic functionality and practicality. The VX8500′s voice quality is excellent, outpacing many recent handsets tested for clarity and volume. Furthermore, folks we called were consistently impressed with the clarity of the call and an overall lack of background noise and echo. The phone’s loudspeaker reminds us of the stereo speakers on LG’s CU500, which were similarly clear enough to nearly fool us into listening to music through them for an extended period. Strangely, it’s only usable as a loudspeaker; we feel we’ve gone back two years by LG’s failure to include speakerphone functionality, but maybe they’re thinking you’ll be listening to so much music that you have no desire to take calls anyway.

The numeric keypad is perfectly usable and the sliding mechanism felt solid. Unfortunately, the placement of the End key on the right side of the top portion of the slider is illogical. Granted, most calls will be ended by pushing the slider closed, but End frequently sees duty as a quick way to get home from deep in the phone’s menu structure, and the relocation makes it virtually useless in that capacity. Similarly, the volume up/down rocker would’ve been better off located on the lower half of the slider — for us, anyway. We’re sure some folks will disagree here, but we found accessing them awkward during a call.

What about the technical wizardry? The Chocolate brings to the table about every feature a Verizon customer could ask for without pushing into smartphone territory, rocking EV-DO, solid music support, a microSD slot, Bluetooth (including A2DP), and location-based services. That being said, these are all features you can find elsewhere in Verizon’s lineup, and this phone doesn’t present any of them in a particularly unique way. Of course, getting to the goodies has to be easy, and we found Verizon’s menu system speedy, attractive, and relatively easy to use, though the top-level menu of the Flash Lite-enabled handset is unnecessarily clunky with its animated, rotating wheel design.

One final aspect of the phone’s high-tech portfolio is its group of touch-sensitive controls. Specifically, the soft keys, Send, Clear / Back, the d-pad, and OK are all designed this way with no tactile feedback — though the directional buttons do have a unique grooved feel and OK is slightly raised in the center. The concept is nifty enough and the thought of navigating our phone in complete silence is enticing, but we had difficulty actuating the keys we intended, particularly with the d-pad. Erroneous entries were frequent, including the occasional accidental phone call. We imagine we’d master it pretty quickly, but fair warning to new users. There’s also a menu item for controlling touch sensitivity which may help, though we didn’t play with it.

Besides being touch-sensitive, the soft keys, Send, and Clear / Back all but disappear when not being backlit in their soft red, which leads us to our final point: aesthetics. The phone’s pretty hot looking, no question. When you first take it out of the box, it essentially looks like a solid, glossy black slab. As with anything glossy, smudges are always an issue and scratch resistance (or lack thereof) can be problematic, but in this case, it’s simply a price society has decided to pay in the name of electronic hotness. All that being said, we see our fair share of beautiful phones, and the Chocolate is by no means in a class by itself — or so we thought. On the streets, we struck up a few casual conversations with passers-by about our newfound plaything. Much to our surprise, a majority of folks were not only well aware of Verizon’s ad campaign and were intrigued by the Chocolate itself, but were also extremely impressed with the phone in person. Several had never seen a slider before and were simply curious about the form factor, but others loved the touch sensitivity, the functionality, and the phone’s overall appearance.

In the end, despite the intense hype buildup surrounding its release, we could only conclude that the VX8500 is a well-equipped (save the lack of a speakerphone) midrange device with a pretty face — no more, no less. Enough to do RAZR-like damage in the marketplace? Probably not, but then again, we haven’t seen the last of the Chocolate.

Kingston bumps microSD lineup to 1GB

With the obsessive push to make things smaller and smaller, Kingston is cramming 1GB of storage in its latest microSD card. Trailing behind SanDisk — which has already released its own ultra-spacious microSD cards in 1GB and 2GB flavors — Kingston is just now making the jump to a gig. Just in case you haven’t forked out for that svelte Chocolate phone yet, the minuscule card comes bundled with a full sized SD adapter for use in “older” digicams and media readers. If you’ve been avoiding the SanDisk offerings (and their steep pricetags), you’ll probably be delighted to find that Kingston’s 1GB version is not only available now, but will only set you back $55.
