X-Micro’s MP4 F700 PMP

Yet another gadget that may or may not make it to the North American market (we’re guessing not), X-Micro’s MP4 F700 PMP has been rocking the floor at Computex lately, although judging from the rather bland design and same-old feature set, it looks like they’re doing their best not to get noticed. Complete specs are a bit scarce, but we do know that it packs in a 2.5-inch 65k color TFT, FM tuner, and digital voice recorder, plays MPEG-4 , MP3, and WMA files, and supports DRM10. On the storage side, well, there’s an SD/MMC slot, but it’s not clear what, if any, internal storage options are available.

Novogo S series GPS units appear

Looks like Novogo had some new GPS units to show off at Computex, though they certainly didn't seem to want to make a big stink about the. The SiRFstarIII-enabled S series units will apparently carry a 3.5-inch QVGA touchscreen, 64MB RAM, SD slot, mini USB connector, and a removable battery -- specs that that sound increasingly smartphone-like, these days. No word as to when these will hit the streets or for how much, but we imagine they'll be out soon and somewhat reasonably priced at that.

Intel’s concept longneck laptop

Filed under:

Intel's been showing around a lot of new concept portable devices lately, especially since the UMPC took center stage earlier this year. Looks like one of those they were really pushing this week at Computex is the concept device we refer only to as the longneck laptop, which in some ways reminds us of more of an HP TC1000 than anything else. Of course, the advantages to a telescoping (or detachable) laptop screen are many, as we can well imagine, but until someone wants to actually build some of these up we're gonna have to let these remain flights of gadget fancy.

Gigabytye’s A963 and H971 VIIV-powered HTPCs

Filed under:

Besides that pair of smartphones we spotted earlier today, Gigabyte has also been showing off a set of home theater PCs at Computex, and whether you like your media centers in tower or pizza box configuration, Gigabyte's got you covered. While both the silver H971 and white A963 support VIIV-powered Core Duo processors, the rest of the specs are nothing that will get you too excited, and the lack of built-in HDMI  or WiFi will probably keep most of our readers from even giving these machines a second glance. Still, if the Intel spin machine has done its job right, the VIIV stickers alone should help Gigabyte move a few units whenever they hit stores.

DualCor cPC in the wild

We’re not nearly as into DualCor’s cPC Windows convergence device now that we found out it doesn’t come with any built-in wireless radios, but we’ve still been looking forward to catching it in the wild just the same, because any pocket-sized machine that sports both XP and WM5 is more than a little bit noteworthy in our book. And luckily for us, our partners-in-crime over at Engadget Chinese have just captured some nice photos of this two-processor machine as part of their extensive Computex 2006 coverage, although our contribution of copying and pasting the pics for you to peep should not be overlooked. More cPC snaps are available after the break, and more VIA-powered products from the CPU manufacturer’s booth tour can be found by following the Read link…

Gigabyte debuts g-Smart i120 & i300 smartphones

Gigabyte is showing off two new Windows Mobile 5.0 smartphones at Computex in Taiwan this week, the g-Smart i120 and g-Smart i300. The i300 appears to be a slightly modified version of what was previously just known as the g-Smart i, a tri-band device (no EDGE, sadly), packing 64MB of RAM, 256MB of ROM, 802.11g, Bluetooth 2.0, GPS, a 2 megapixel camera, 2.4-inch QVGA screen, as well as a MiniSD slot and an FM tuner; what's not clear if it supports the same crazy rabbit ears for TV reception as the other g-Smart we saw a couple of months ago. The i120 takes a different approach, featuring a built-in keypad, but the specs are pretty similar otherwise, with tri-band GSM (900 / 1800 / 1900) and GPRS, 64MB RAM, 256MB ROM, 802.11g, Bluetooth (just 1.2 on this one), infrared, a 2.4-inch QVGA display, 2 megapixel camera, and, it seems, a TV tuner in addition to the FM (no evidence of rabbit ears though). Check the read link below for some more pics courtesy of Phone Daily.

AnexTEK intros moboDA 3380 and 3160 smartphones

We've gotta hand it to AnexTEK, not only are they keepin' it real fake with their new moboDA 3380 and 3160 smartphones, they're showing off their "designs" at a major tradeshow, Computex, where they may well run into a few companies who can be forgiven for thinking that AnexTEK's been swiping things from their booths when they weren't looking. The 3380 (which bears more than a passing resemblance to BenQ's P51), is the more capable of the two, with built-in WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, a 2 megapixel camera, and a speedy Intel PXA270 520 MHz processor. As you can see, it also has a full QWERTY keyboard. The 3160 (taking cues from HP's RW6828, itself an XDA Atom rebadge), lacks a keyboard and packs a slightly slower Intel PXA270 416 MHz processor, along with a 1.3 megapixel camera, and integrated WiFi and Bluetooth 1.2. No word on price, and (surpise!) they're not likely to be available outside of Taiwan anytime soon.

Iceman Outdoor PC delivers poolside entertainment

Filed under:

Just like a fellow we once knew who also went by the name of Iceman, Visson’s new fan-less, all-weather outdoor PC may be a little off-putting at first (due to its 1.5GHz Via processor and support for just 1GB of RAM, though, not because it seems “dangerous”), but wins you over in the end by getting the job done even in the harshest conditions. While you’d certainly never consider Iceman for your most important computing tasks (read: gaming), the optional digital TV receiver and wireless LAN, along with MPEG-2 decoding, ensure that you can stay entertained even while lounging around the pool — it would go great with the ginormous inflatable SuperScreen Outdoor Theater System we saw last year. And now, the obligatory Top Gun reference for wrapping up this post: Iceman, you can be our wingman anytime.

Engadget Chinese does Computex

Filed under:

You didn’t really think that just because the Computex trade show is going on halfway around the world, we wouldn’t send a crack team of reporters to cover the event, did you? While our US staff neglected to renew their passports in time for their flights, the folks over at Engadget Chinese (traditional or simplified, your choice) were just a hop, skip, and jump away from Taipei, Taiwan, so they’ve graciously stepped up to the plate and provided the coverage necessary to make us feel that we’re right in the thick of it. They’ve already posted a number of booth tours of your favorite companies, like Intel (who’ve apparently rented out an absolutely mind-boggling swath of hall), Sandisk, Toshiba, and, um, A Data, with the latter company’s tour proving that our Asian colleagues have the same unhealthy obsession with cartoon-inspired gadgets as we do. Don’t worry, we’ll keep you apprised of the highlights from this year’s show, but for the full in-your-face Computex experience, chinese.engadget.com is the place to be.
