Starbucks contest features image recognition via MMS

If you’re looking for the most high-tech way to win a trip to Costa Rica, we think we’ve got your answer right here. Starbucks’ Summer Pursuit game uses trivia questions sent via SMS to weed out contestants — nothing too interesting there, but answers can be sent with a reply text or by MMSing a picture of the answer to an email address. Seems a bit dangerous to us, since we’re guessing the recognition rate isn’t 100% and we Americans sure do like to sue when things don’t go our way — but if it means we can snap a pic of “triple Venti extra-hot sugar-free hazelnut soy latte” instead of typing it in via T9, we’re all for it.

Engadget Spanish logo extravaganza

Filed under: Contest, EngadgetSpanish, birthday, engadget spanish — Paul Miller @ 8:16 pm

Filed under:

Never ones to shy away from shameless self promotion, or to hold back on birthday extravagances, we're proud to present a fresh collection of takes on the Engadget logo created by readers of the newly 1-year-old Engadget Spanish for their birthday contest. The first and second place winners received a PEBL and a SanDisk Sansa respectively, but every submission upholds the high standards of mad-Engadget-love we've come to expect from our own reader contests. Check the read link for the rest of the pics, alongside snarky commentary in a language we can barely order take-out in.

Gizmodo-House Contest Update

Filed under: Contest — Gizmodo @ 9:25 am

This Sharp AQUOS 20-inch flat panel TV is just waiting to be awarded to the person who builds the best gingerbread-inspired edible Gizmodo house. Trouble is, we have received just 3 entries. Now, I have no problem with those odds—but given the huge response to contests Gizmodo has run in the past for much less valuable items, I am somewhat surprised. Is there a gingerbread/graham cracker shortage I didn't hear about? Has the NYC transit strike created a problem with the frosting supply chain? Write and let us know that you still care.

The deadline is December 27!

Here's how to win: Take two photos of your creation—one of the construction process and one of the finished Gizmodo-house. Mail the photos in JPG format—72 dpi, max 500 pixels on the top side—to gizmodobox@gmail.com with SHARP HOUSE in the subject line.

Big thanks to Vikuiti, the sponsor of this contest whose technology makes the Aquos so rad.

iPod Shrine of the Day: Last Respects

Filed under: Contest — Gizmodo @ 6:09 pm

ipod-god-shrine-5.jpg
The pilgrimage is nearly complete. Today's shrine, a hand-made ode to Ganesha, is the last iPod Shrine of the Day. The rest of you shrine-keepers have until midnight EST tonight to enter your devotionals and win an Apple iPod 30GB video player. Tomorrow will begin the first in a series of elimination rounds that you the reader will vote on to help Gizmodo's editors determine who has the worthiest shrine of them all.

saintsteve.jpgThe competition is serious. There are shrines representing Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Christian-ism, Apple-ism and even Robot-ism. Yes, Robotism—don't miss this video of the iBot in action. And while I'm on the subject of videos, the "Saint Steve" picture frame from this iShrine video is a true work of art.

Here's the deal, and it's the last time I'm going to tell you: Entries must be accompanied by a photograph in JPG format—72 dpi, max 400 pixels on the top side. Please, NO HUGE PHOTOS OR WE WILL CRY (download Gimp if you don’t have a good photo editor). Also, write us two or three sentences describing the devotional, its symbology and what makes it sacred. Send entries to gizmodobox@gmail.com with IPOD SHRINE in the subject line. Repeat: Entries must be sent to gizmodobox@gmail.com with the subject line IPOD SHRINE; all others will be unceremoniously deleted.

iPod Shrine of the Day

Filed under: Contest — Gizmodo @ 4:01 pm

iShrine.jpg
Several classic shrines were entered today into Gizmodo's Apple iPod shrine-building contest. As you contemplate the nature of this particular devotional, ponder these questions:

  • Is this shrine worthy of a video iPod?
  • Is the desire for a second iPod not at odds with the Buddhist way?
  • Would his holiness the Dalai Lama podcast or video podcast?
  • Is Apple leading us nearer to or farther from path to enlightenment?
  • Mmm... Donuts.

Please answer these questions in the comments area below. And keep building those shrines, the Apple iPod giveaway is far from over. Entries must be accompanied by a photograph in JPG format—72 dpi, max 400 pixels on the top side, please—NO HUGE PHOTOS OR WE WILL CRY (download Gimp if you don’t have a good photo editor—along with two or three sentences describing the devotional, its symbology and what makes it sacred. iPod Shrine Contest: Devotees Welcome

Filed under: Contest — Gizmodo @ 11:30 am

    ipodshrineguitar.jpg
Gizmodo is giving away a 30GB iPod video player to the person who builds the best shrine devoted to it. We first posed the challenge last week, and since then plenty of readers sent in Photoshop fantasies like the Meccapple Store (you can see it, and then declare your fatwa on Gizmodo, after the jump).

Much as we enjoyed seeing Meccapple and the iPod at the center of Michelangelo's Creation, those simply do not qualify. Remember, a shrine is "a container, usually in precious materials, especially for a relic, and/or holy or sacred place containing the same..." The idea is for you, dear readers, to build the shrine that this lovely iPod video will live in after you win. But don't fret, you have until November 28 to build a proper home.

Send entries to gizmodobox@gmail.com with IPOD SHRINE in the subject line. Repeat: Entries must be sent to gizmodobox@gmail.com with the subject line IPOD SHRINE, all others will be unceremoniously deleted.

Hopelessly Devoted - iPod Shrine Contest

Filed under: Contest — Gizmodo @ 1:30 pm

stipod.gifWhen it comes to religious devotion to gizmos, nothing inspires fanaticism like the iPod. This spirituality has been manifest in an endless processional of cases, docks, and speakers. But to date, it has not engendered much of a homegrown, folk-artsy patronage. There are no iPod milagros in Mexico. Certainly no Apple jinjas in Japan. No iPod docks in the form of a dancing Buddha, or Arca Vigraha with Lord Ganesha holding a nano in his hand. No chickens get beheaded Voodoo-style so the blood can be dribbled across the front of an iPod as an offering to the spirits. And, as of yet, no toasted cheese sandwiches that miraculously become engraved with the Apple Logo. All that is about to change.

Gizmodo is giving away a 30GB iPod — you know, the one that plays video? — to the person who builds the best shrine to house the bewildering glory that is Job's Seed. The winner chooses the color (black or white). What's a shrine, you ask? Wikipedia answers:

A shrine, from the Latin scrinium (‘box’, also used as a desk, like the french bureau hence also an administrative office) is originally a container, usually in precious materials, especially for a relic, and/or holy or sacred place containing the same, hence dedicated towards a certain god, goddess, saint, or similar religious figure.

Entries must be accompanied by a photograph in JPG format—72 dpi, max 400 pixels on the top side, please—NO HUGE PHOTOS OR WE WILL CRY (download Gimp if you don't have a good photo editor—along with two or three sentences describing the devotional, its symbology and what makes it sacred. Send entries to gizmodobox@gmail.com with IPOD SHRINE in the subject line. Repeat: Entries must be sent to gizmodobox@gmail.com with the subject line IPOD SHRINE, all others will be unceremoniously deleted.

Entries will be posted daily so that Gizmodo readers can help choose the winner. Vaya con MP3ios, friends. The contest winner will be announced Monday, November 28th.
