Keyspan Cordless VoIP Phone: soon to be chattin’ for $79

Filed under: Cordless,GizmoProject,Skype,VoIP,gizmo project,handset,keyspan,zfone — Cyrus Farivar @ 2:15 pm

Filed under:

It seems like everyone and their sister is coming out with Skype-compatible phones these days. And taking a page out of the handheld barcode scanner design playbook, Keyspan wants a piece of the VoIP pie too. Its new $79 model, imaginatively called the “Cordless VoIP Phone”, has 15 hours of talk time, 1200 hours of standby time, USB/AAA power, and it’s Mac and PC friendly, a’course. However, Keyspan doesn’t list where you can buy this handset, or when it will be available. That aside, if another company (besides FiWin) really wanted to make the real-deal ultimate killer handset, they’d make a phone that was Gizmo/Zfone and Skype-friendly — we’d definitely be interested. But apparently Skype doesn’t like to play nice with SIP phones or any other kind of VoIP, which is a real shame because there’s such a great marketing opportunity here — they could call it SIPpe, like “sippy”, as in the cup. Whaddya say?

FiWIN’s FX28S and SS28S, where Skype and SIP coexist

You wouldn’t believe it, but somehow FiWin (which is owned by FIC) got Skype and SIP to sit down at the table together and play some Mahjong. It’s not really technically all that difficult, but until now we hadn’t really seen a Skype / SIP dual-mode VoIP capable handset, so we welcome you, oh pathfinding FX28S and SS28S WiFi phones; otherwise they’re just another couple of 802.11b phone devices with a 3.5 hour call life, a USB 1.1 connector, and a weak 1.2-inch 65k color 128 x 95 CSTN display in the the FX28S, and a 1.4-inch monochrome 96 x 65 display in the SS28S.

Filed under:

Sony just announced their new W850 Walkman cellphone and this baby's hot. Available in black or white as designs tend to go these days, this tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 slider also delivers UMTS 2100. It comes pre-loaded with the latest Walkman 2.0 player 2.0 with TrackID allowing you to lookup and identify recorded music samples via the Gracenote Mobile MusicID service. Not only that, but it ships with a 1GB of Memory Strick PRO Duo'in storage (with up to 4GB supported) and features a horizontal mode 2 megapixel shooter with LED light. Rounding out the features are a 2-inch QVGA TFT 260k color display, RDS FM Stereo radio, and Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP stereo audio. No price but we can expect these to ship sometime Q3 2006... in Europe. More pics after the break.

Pantech releases PG-6200 securityphone in Taiwan

Pantech has just released a new handset for the security-conscious Taiwanese citizen who also wants some pretty capable multimedia features in his/her cellphone. To keep sensitive data out of the wrong hands, the tri-band PG-6200 features a fingerprint scanner rather curiously placed right above the smudge-prone two megapixel camera lens, along with a music player that handles MP3 and AAC files from either the 20MB internal memory or a microSD card. Other nice touches include Bluetooth (no word on A2DP compatibility, though) and JAVA 2.0 so you can get your Opera Mini-on, along with the obligatory email, SMS, and MMS functionality.

Dmobo’s P700 Pooh phone

Filed under: WinnieThePooh,cellphone,disney,dmobo,handset,mobile,p700,pooh,winnie the pooh — Thomas Ricker @ 3:00 am

Filed under:

We’ve never really been into Pooh. But if the Tao of the honey bear has you or your youngin’ by the throat then perhaps the Dmobo P700 is the phone for you. Built in cahoots with Disney, the P700 sports many of the same features as big-girl phones: digital camera with flash, MP3 and MPEG-4 media player, and of course, a healthy slathering of Winnie the Pooh themes, wallpapers, ringtones, and accessories sure to make the $332 price-tag plus airfare to Hong Kong or Macau (where this is available) all seem worthwhile. Right, princess?

T-Mobile’s BlackBerry 8700g reviewed

Despite Cingular's claim of being "the network with the least dropped calls," PC Mag's Sascha Segan finds that T-Mobile's version of the BlackBerry 8700 smartphone, the 8700g, actually outperforms its 8700c cousin in terms of call quality. Other improvements upon the Cingular model are T-Mobile's addition of two key software features: the OZ semi-universal IM client (no Gtalk, and AIM users are restricted to their small mobile buddy group) as well as the first implementation of the Yahoo!/RIM partnership we heard about last month, in the form of a handy Y! Mail icon pre-loaded in the launcher. Besides these small differences, however, Sascha finds the 8700g to perform almost exactly the same as the 8700c -- that is, very well. Email and texting are a pleasure, attachment support is good for all but PDF files, and the crisp screen delivers web pages cleanly (albeit at EDGE speeds), making this seem like the new go-to device for the Mob's business clientele.

Is this the T-Mobile-branded Sidekick III?

Filed under: Rumors,SidekickIii,danger,gsm,handset,leaks,photos,pics,sidekick III,t-mobile — Evan Blass @ 12:48 pm

Is this the fabled Danger Sidekick III? We can't say for sure, but the site that reader John M. tipped us to contains this solitary photo, which looks almost identical to the shots that have been leaking out for the last few months. Although no explanation of the picture is given, John claims that its from T-Mobile's advertising campaign for the device, which sounds pretty reasonable to us.

Q to be launched May 22nd?

Alright Q fans, we've got some good news for you. We've received word that Verizon and Motorola are holding a joint news conference in New York this May 22nd -- no, not May 22nd 2007, though we should qualify that -- to announce the Q. We know, wipe the look of shock off your face; we don't really have much more info to give you than that, but really, what more do you need? By this point you're either completely sick of hearing about this thing, or have some insane pent up urge to get one, so for the latter crowd: keep your eyes and ears tuned to May 22nd.

Nokia’s N93 caught in the wild

src="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2006/04/l_os_n93-6.jpg" />

Hot on the heels of href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2006/04/25/nokias-n73-and-n93-launched/">Nokia’s N93 announcement are some
shots of this camcorder/phone in the wild. Japanese site PlusD Mobile has plenty of snaps but little in the way of
review commentary on Nokia’s new flagship N-series phone expected to drop for some €550/$690 in July. So kick
back, and feast on the eye-candy for a few until we can nab ya’ll some actual MPEG-4 recordings from this pup. Then
we’ll see if Nokia’s plan to href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2006/03/21/nokia-plans-demise-of-mp3-players-and-video-cameras/">take a bite out of
the camcorder (and DAP player) bidness in the same way cellphones have kicked alarm clocks, wrist watches, and
low-end digitalcams to the curb, is for realz. The N93 is certainly capable given its relative size (to a camcorder)
and fact that it packs in a 3.2 megapixel Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens with image stabilization, microSD expansion, big
2.4-inch fold-out display, and the ability to pump video down the TV-out jack or over WiFi to any href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=upnp">UPnP capable device. Ogle more pics after the break.

LG’s Style-i “hands-free” headset available from Verizon

/>
LG’s Style-i, the
Bluetooth cellphone accessory that took the "hands-free" out "of "hands-free headset," is now
available exclusively from Verizon, and for a little cheaper than the $150 we originally reported. As you’ll no doubt
recall from our original mocking write-up of the Style-i, this href="http://www.engadget.com/2004/10/19/haier-p7-pen-phone/">Haier P7-lookalike is designed for the same purpose
as other Bluetooth headsets — to let you make calls while your phone is charging or in a bag — but without the
convenience of, you know, freeing up your hands. Actually, LG almost had us sold on this $130 product until we found
out that you can’t daisy-chain two of them together — how are you supposed to pick up a call if both your phone and
first Style-i are charging simultaneously?

Nokia N72 launched

Along with the N93 and N73, Nokia just launched their new N72 multimedia tri-band GSM / EDGE cellphone. This Symbian S60 handset features a 2.1-inch, 176 x 208, 262k color display, Bluetooth 2.0, and 20MB internal memory expandable via SD. Media support includes a digital music player with dedicated music keys supporting MP3 and AAC playback, an FM Radio with Visual Radio support, and throws in a swivel-activated 2 megapixel shooter with integrated flash capable of CIF video capture at 15fps. Nokia is positioning this pup as a "multimedia computer" which is a bit of a stretch, but we'll play along for now. Expected in Pearl Pink or Gloss Black sometime in June 2006. Nokia’s N73 and N93 launched

Well hello there href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2006/04/17/nokia-n73-revealed/">N73 (bottom) and href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/11/17/the-next-n-series-n93/">N93, how nice to see you in the for realz at last.
Other than finally making these phones official we don’t really have too much new information to offer. Both models run
Series 60 3rd edition and feature large 2.4-inch QVGA, 262k color displays, Bluetooth 2.0, miniSD slot expansion,
MP3/ACC media players, FM radio with Visual Radio, and a chubby 3.2 megapixel shooter with Carl Zeiss optics,
autofocus, mechanical shutter, and integrated flash. Want to share those snaps? Coolio daddy-o, ’cause a new
partnership with Flickr gives you the ability to upload and add comments to your photos directly from your new N-series
cellphone without the need to download any additional software. The N73 will launch as both a quad-band GSM/EDGE model
and another which includes 3G (2100MHz UMTS). It features 42MB of on-board memory and 3D stereo speakers at the top and
bottom of the unit to kick out some tinny jams. Meanwhile the href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/11/02/nokias-n71-n80-and-n92-media-phones/">N92-lookin’ N93 turns-out
900/1800/1900 GSM/EDGE and 3G (2100MHz UMTS), 50MB built-in memory, 802.11b/g WiFi, href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/11/04/nokia-embraces-upnp-with-new-n-series-additions/">UPnP, TV-out, and adds a
3x optical zoom to the shooter which can record MPEG-4 VGA video at 30fps. If you’re looking for mobile TV, you’ll have
to stick with the N92 though, since the N93 does not feature a DVB-H tuner. Both will drop in July. Welcome to the show
boys. More product images after the break.

Samsung’s SCH-V890 slim slider

Filed under: Bluetooth,NATE drive,NateDrive,Samsung,cellphone,handset,slider,slim,thin — Thomas Ricker @ 2:00 am

Samsung just knocked a couple more phone models outta bed to show-off their new SCH-V890/SPH-V8900 cellphone. This slider measures in at 13.8-mm and 85-grams and features a 2.12-inch, 240 x 320, 262K color TFT LCD, Bluetooth, a 1.3 megapixel shooter, MP3 player and that Nate Drive service popular in South Korea. We're not sure, but we'll bet you can even hold it up real close to your pie-hole for making calls. At least it better for that roughly $525 US equiv.

LG’s CU500 3G clam with quad-band GSM/EDGE and HSDPA

HowardForums has some pics of that new slim LG CU500 clamshell coming to Cingular. This dual-mode phone is said to go quad-band GSM/EDGE, support WCDMA 850/1900 (and possibly 2100 making this a global 3G phone), and will operate on Cingular's HSDPA (1.8Mbps) network. What's more, that swiveling 1.3 megapixel cam eliminates the need for that second, bulky cam found on many 3G phones. It supports MicroSD expansion, looks crazy-thin for all the features it packs, and according to HoFo peeps, throws down an internal 2-inch, QCIF TFT LCD to view content on Cingular's Video service. Apparently, the CU500 is already FCC approved meaning it could drop anytime. More pics after the break.

LG applies for “drawer phone” with motorized slider

LG has just filed a patent for a new type of slider phone wherein a motorized, protective covering containing the microphone and antenna slides up to reveal the screen and keypad, and of course, extend the antenna. Called a "drawer-type" phone, this design supposedly offers numerous advantages over traditional form factors, taking the best attributes of different phone styles while attempting to minimize their shortcomings. For instance, a drawer phone maintains the compact profile of a flip phone or slider while in a bag or pocket, while at the same time situating the mic closer to your mouth when in-use, a la some of the better candybar mobiles. You also get the screen protection and dual display benefits of a clamshell, because the sliding section contains a clear window, but none of the finger strain involved with manually opening and closing the flip. This design definitely seems to have its benefits, but since this patent has a long way to go before being approved, we're not sure when or even if we'll ever see it in production.

Philips Xenium 9@9t candybar

Filed under: Xenium9@9t,candybar,gsm,handset,philips,phone,touchscreen,xenium 9@9t — Paul Miller @ 12:24 pm

The Philips Xenium 9@9 series is traditionally a rather low-end group of candybar phones, but this new 9@9t isn't looking too bad. Sure, the miniSD slot, MP3 playback and 1.3 megapixel camera are fairly standard by now, but the phone features some sort of touchscreen, along with touting 30 days of standby -- if the text on the screen can be believed. The slim phone is also supposed to be tri-band GSM, but that's about all we have for info right now.

The Sidekick III “reviewed”

So, it might seem a bit ridiculous for someone to write up a review of a product that is not only so far unannounced and unavailable, but that he hasn't even managed to personally photograph. But that's not stopping BSD of the Sidekick 3 blog, who has managed to eke out a review. Obviously we can't verify his claims, but he seems to have a few sources to help him out with info, along with the fact that most of his details seem pretty common sensical and/or confirmed by the pics we've seen so far. He says the unit has a 1.3 megapixel camera with flash, Bluetooth, a SD card slot, built-in MP3, and support for multiple IM protocols. The form factor is a sort of mix between the original Sidekick and the Sidekick II, and is notably bulky for a modern phone. There's a new cursor nubbin, which works well but feels a little flaky, along with an updated keyboard. Sadly, the screen is the same size and resolution as always, which is starting to throughly date the device. Luckily the SD slot makes music playback and PC file interchange easy, and the Bluetooth not only works well, but seems to provide some sort of PC functionality, which is always nice. Sounds like the device is mostly the same as far software goes, but it does seem the interface has been spruced a bit, and the AIM, Yahoo and MSN IM support are a big plus. We'll try and reserve judgement until we manage to get a Sidekick III in hand, but if this review is for real we can't have too terribly long to wait.

LG @ CTIA, the rest: LG225, LG350, LG3400, LG5300, LG8300

LG brought a crush of new GSM and CDMA phones into CTIA in addition to the LG550 musicphone, LG DM-L200 for Disney we checked earlier. The LG8300 musicphone (pictured) is the most interesting of the lot bringing dual-stereo speakers and A2DP stereo Bluetooth to the game while packing a 1.3 megapixel cam, EV-DO data, a GPS positioning system, and stubby little antenna for jabbing into the sides of annoying commuters. The mid-level LG5300 packs in CDMA, dual-band GSM, Bluetooth and a VGA cam with flash. The LG3400 meanwhile, is touted as "sleek, sexy and super lightweight" clamshell -- you be the judge. The LG350 then sports Bluetooth, dual internal/external LCD displays, and 3D graphics support. Bringing up the rear is the LG225 which sports a range of uninspiring features such as VGA cam, full-duplex speakerphone, and MSN Messenger for those mad texting tweeners in your life. Pics of the others after the break.

Leaked shots of the Blackberry 7130c

Is it just us, or are RIM's Blackberry devices getting svelter by the minute? The latest pictures to surface are of their unannounced 7130c phone for Cingular. The device shares the keypad ethics of the rest of the 7100 series, though it does seem to have its very own sense of style, a definite departure from the 7130e which was launched last year. The good news is that the phone seems to be trimming the bulk, with its front dominated by the screen and keypad. The bad news is that's all we know so far. We'll keep you posted.

Motorola’s new ruggedized i580 iDEN clamshell

If push-to-talk isn’t too sissy for you now that those href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/12/02/cingular-goes-live-with-push-to-talk/">Cingular kids can do it, Motorola
is prepping a rugged version of their href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/10/31/motos-i870-antibacterial-widen-phone/">i870 iDEN phone, the i580. The
phone has the same WiDEN connectivity, PTT (of course), Bluetooth, 1.3 megapixel camera, and dual displays of the i870,
though the external display on the i580 is a smaller grayscale one. The phone does lose the external MP3 controls,
though it can still play your tunes off of the internal microSD slot. Of course, the main addition is the rubberized
shell and military grade resistance to rain, dust, shock, and vibration that the new handset includes. The i580 should
be available in Q2 of this year for an undetermined price.

New DS801 musicphone from DNet

DNet's new DS801 music-centric slider might not be the most exciting thing around, but it seems a large improvement over their crazy-go-nuts DM751 iPod mini phone. The handset sports a 1.8-inch 176 x 220 LCD, 1.3 megapixel camera, and tri-band GSM radio, along with a bit of MP3 music and MPEG video playback functionality. You can add memory via miniSD, and scroll through your music with that convenient, if slightly "familiar", scroll wheel. No word on price or availability.

Sony Ericsson’s W700i: just the W800i Walkman phone done-up in gold

Filed under: SonyEricsson,cellphone,handset,music,phone,sony ericsson,walkman,sonyericsson — Thomas Ricker @ 2:51 am

That Sony Ericsson Walkman line-up just keeps growing and growing. Today, SE announces their 8th Walkman phone, the W700. Said to appeal to "lovers of classic and discreet design," the W700i throws-down tri-band GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900, Bluetooth 2.0, FM radio, a 2 megapixel cam, and ships with 256MB of Memory Stick Pro Duo'in storage. Expect these to ship in Q2 nought-six in both "titanium gold" and "smooth white." Hey, wait a second, other than being gold and shipping with a 256MB (not 512) MS Pro Duo card, there's nothing to distinguish this Walkman from the W800i released last year. Hell, it even sports the exact dimensions. A bit trivial for a full model number change especially when the addition of EDGE, an extra GSM band, and new controls only warranted a 10-point bump.
