LG C1 XNote reviewed (sorta, in Korean)

Filed under: 3g,C1Xnote,Tablet PCs,TabletPcs,c1 xnote,hsdpa,lg,tablets — Cyrus Farivar @ 4:25 am

It hasn’t even been a week since we first spotted the new LG C1 XNote, but already the first reviews are starting to trickle in (sort of). See, we came across what is supposed to be the first Korean review of the LG C1 XNote, however, we’re pretty sure that there must be something lost in Google’s translation, because this “review” doesn’t exactly pull apart the nitty-gritty of this tablet. Whatever though, it sure does have some brilliant photos. Here’s what we were able to garner from the review: the LG C1 XNote has an nVIDIA Geforce 7300 Go, HSDPA, a 10.6-inch screen, a SD and CompactFlash card slot, and a USIM slot (all stuff you could find on the spec sheet). If any of our readers who understand Korean can perhaps help us out with some more info that we missed out on, you know how to find us. In the meantime, check out one more snapshot that we snagged of this bad boy on the next page.

Samsung announces S60-powered SGH-i520

Filed under: 3g,Samsung,Series60,hsdpa,i520,s60,series 60,sgh-i520,slider,smartphone,symbian,umts — Chris Ziegler @ 2:29 am

Nokia gets the lion’s share of the attention when it comes to the S60 platform and Symbian generally — perhaps rightfully so, considering they ship far more Symbian-based smartphones than any other vendor — but Samsung would like to politely remind everyone that they’re an S60 licensee, too. Their latest effort, the SGH-i520 slider, had its coming-out party this week at the Symbian Smartphone Show, and the spec sheet looks to give Nokia’s E- and N-series multimedia powerhouses an honest-to-goodness run for their money. The typical 2-megapixel camera and QVGA display aside, the i520 packs an HSDPA radio — something no released Nokia handset has managed to do; granted, the N95 does it, but we’ve got a little wait ahead of us for that monster. Lucky owners also get a microSD slot should they find the 45MB of usable storage a bit light, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, and a front-facing VGA shooter for those ever-popular video calls. Per protocol, it doesn’t seem that a US launch is in the works, but one can never be sure; stranger things have happened.

Sierra Wireless to provide HSDPA for new Intel-based UMPCs

Filed under: 3g,SierraWireless,hsdpa,intel,sierra,sierra wireless,umpc — Cyrus Farivar @ 9:40 pm

For all you internet junkies out there (and if you’re reading Engadget on a Friday night, we’re referring to you), you’ll be pleased to know that Intel’s newest chipset for next-gen UMPCs are getting some 3G love from Sierra Wireless. This dovetails nicely with the announcement yesterday that Intel’s Santa Rosa chipset would be also be getting some HSDPA action, but from cellphone giant Nokia. Intel also said that its newest ultra-mobile chip will be based on the Core 2 Duo, will only draw half as much power, and will measure just one quarter the size of the current chipset. Ok guys, we don’t mind you shrinking the devices, but for the love of Gordon Moore, please don’t make those screens any more squint-inducing.

Sierra Wireless to offer HSDPA, EV-DO Rev A via USB

Filed under:

Not a day’s passed after we caught word of Sprint’s launch of Novatel’s S720 PC Card do we hear that Sierra Wireless has a proverbial one-two punch of WWAN modems up its sleeve, this time of the USB variety. First up in Q4 of this year will be the 595U, an EV-DO Revision A device topping out at a purely-theoretical 3.1Mbps downstream, followed by the quad-band GSM, tri-band HSDPA 875U humming along at 3.6Mbps in Q1 2007. Both USB modems look to be coming in sleek little packages with internal antennas and matching cradles, support location-based services, and have upgradeable firmware. If these things really look as slick as the press shots make them out to be, we may not be whining for a Rev A ExpressCard after all — if the ship dates hold up, that is.

Moto surprises with 3G MotoRAZR MAXX

Filed under: MotoRazr,MotorazrMaxx,RAZR,edge,hsdpa,maxx,motorazr maxx,motorola,umts,v3x — Paul Miller @ 8:45 pm

Filed under:

Well, it’s not an absolute surprise, we saw this model as an unnamed prototype floating around last month, but Motorola just officially took the wraps off of their new MotoRAZR MAXX, a purtiful followup to the V3x. At a mere 0.6-inches thick, the MAXX shaves a whole 0.2-inches off of the V3x. The new phone also adds EDGE and HSDPA in addition to the already speedy UMTS, making this handset much more likely to show up in the EDGE-friendly USA. Moto has included Bluetooth 2.0+ Enhanced Data Rate, 50MB of internal storage, a microSD slot for expansion and the snazzy glass front and touch sensitive music controls of launch buddy KRZR K1m. The 2.2-inch QVGA display is, of course, always welcome, as are the 2.0 megapixel and VGA cameras the phone has. Also, as a nice embellishment on the lot, the phone’s details glow blue when receiving a call. Motorola is planning to release the phone to unknown markets and carriers in this half of 2006, our fingers are duly crossed.

LG CU500 HSDPA Phone Available on Cingular

Cingular releases its first HSDPA phone with the LG CU500 flip. The CU500 has a swiveling 1.3 megapixel camera, music keys, microSD, stereo Bluetooth and weighs 105 grams.

The phone has a pretty average talk time of 3.5 hours, but it’s the first phone to use the new HSDPA network, so quit complaining. But, the HSDPA is only available in select markets for now, so check your area before plopping down for the LG.

The phone isn’t on the Cingular website yet, but we’ll update when it is.

LG CU500 Launched for New Cingular 3G Service [Mobiledia via Phone Scoop]

The handset itself might not be anything spectacular in terms of specification, but one aspect of LG's CU500 clamshell makes it extraordinarily interesting: it's North America's first retail HSDPA handset. A little private investigation on our part (meaning we called a few stores) reveals that the phone officially drops in Cingular's 3G markets tomorrow, but several persistent individuals have managed to get stores in the Boston and Atlanta areas to part with their units a day early. HowardForums has a rather active thread heralding the news, which you can read after you give your local store a call, eh?

HTC TyTN (Hermes) gets a possible ship date

Filed under: Pocket PC,PocketPc,WindowsMobile,hermes,hsdpa,htc,umts,windows mobile,wm5 — Chris Ziegler @ 1:37 pm

We may not be able to pronounce the name of HTC's self-branded variant of the Hermes -- TyTN -- but we will be able to rock one toward the end of this month, if Expansys' UK site is to be trusted. Expansys is showing an alleged July 17 availability date for the device, and while our European friends are already well-acquainted with its imminent availability in several flavors of carrier, this could be the only shot Americans have at 1900MHz UMTS smartphone goodness until it officially drops on Cingular in the fall (knock on wood). The Hermes is physically a dead ringer for the Wizard it replaces, but mercifully upgrades the woefully underclocked OMAP to a 400MHz Samsung piece, adds a second camera for video calling, and bumps the primary to 2 megapixels. The price north of $1,000 USD might seem stratospheric to most of us, but we suspect we can find a few Wizard-toting folks willing to shed it to get themselves out of EDGE purgatory.

HTC Trinity revealed?

Filed under: GPS,HtcTrinity,hermes,hsdpa,htc,htc trinity,smartphone,trinity — Paul Miller @ 12:46 am

We've just spotted what purports to be the HTC Trinity, and while it's looking quite a bit different (and a bit less sleek) than the last time it surfaced, the specs are just as spiffing. The Windows Mobile 5.0 actually doesn't look too much different than HTC's Hermes, with the main addition of GPS and some reworked face buttons. There's 64MB of RAM, 128MB of ROM, a 2.8-inch QVGA display, Bluetooth, WiFi, EDGE, HSDPA and a microSD slot. Just like the Hermes there are VGA and 2.0 megapixel cameras, and the phone is similarly slim at 0.7-inches thick. No more info as to when this will be out, and we can't say we aren't disappointed about the fairly generic look, but there's always a chance (hope) this report is a bit off.

LG’s KH1000 HSDPA slider for KTF

Filed under: KTF,SkTelecom,hsdpa,kh1000,korea,lg,sch-w200,sh100,sk telecom — Chris Ziegler @ 3:45 pm

It looks like SK Telecom and KTF are locked in a heated battle for Korean HSDPA supremacy, with both carriers having launched their 3.5G networks in the last month. So far, equipment is a toss-up, KTF having received a reskin of SK’s Samsung SCH-W200 and now this, LG’s KH1000, a remake of their SH100 for SK. LG takes a cue from Samsung here, swapping color schemes and d-pads, but leaving the phone’s innards intact (as best we can tell). Besides simply looking better than its Samsung stablemate, the KH1000 wins the cool factor, sporting an additional degree of slider freedom for two — count ‘em, two — keypads on the bottom and right of the phone. Naturally, the KH1000 isn’t expected outside Korea, but we’re pretty sure we couldn’t pony up the cash for it anyhow.

Cingular: we’re kinda okay with VoIP, we guess

Cingular is going to let you roll VoIP over its 3G network, but they don't have to like it. That's the message Cingular CTO Kristin Rinne effectively gave this week, saying that they don't explicitly have a problem with folks running VoIP through their UMTS pipeline, but they'd rather have QoS and billing systems in place (naturally) beforehand. Since they don't, and data is data, let the Skypeing begin on that all-you-can-eat HSDPA plan of yours -- just don't be surprised if they suddenly try to nickel-and-dime you once their IMS implementation gets going.

Samsung breaks the bank with HSDPA SPH-W2100

A month after SK Telecom rolled out Korea’s first commercial HSDPA network with the SCH-W200, #2 Korean carrier KTF is getting theirs, launching the lookalike SPH-W2100 along with its own 3.5G service. Deets on the W2100 have been hard to track down, but we know that it trades the W200′s S-DMB for terrestrial DMB and comes in at 21.1mm thick; if we were betting folk, we’d wager that the W2100′s innards are otherwise similar, likely sporting 2 megapixel external and VGA video calling cameras, music player, and multitasking capability. Apparently, the W2100 allows the user to text and video call at the same time, though we think that might be information overload for our little brains. Koreans readers needing 1.8Mbps of sliding KTF action best have some available credit limit — expect the SPH-W2100 to retail in the neighborhood of $800 USD when it drops next month.

Cingular lights up 3G in New York City

Cingular Video, anyone? Just a few weeks after having Samsung ZX10s unceremoniously removed from stores, New Yorkers are getting some HSDPA love now that Cingular’s network has officially gone live. Yes, that means you can once again get your hands on the UMTS-only ZX10 — whether you’d want to is another story — but more importantly, Cingular’s 3G PC cards will keep your notebook clipping along at some reasonably healthy speeds, especially if you’re used to dealing with EDGE. Coverage is mainly limited to Manhattan and JFK right now, but a rapid expansion is promised through September of this year.

Panasonic rolls Cingular HSDPA for ToughBook CF-18

It’s a rough world out there, and no one should be without 3G nowadays — especially not anyone whose job requires them to carry a Panasonic CF-18, one of their iron-clad ToughBook class laptops strong enough to take a bullet (ok, maybe not really). Looks like Panny landed a deal with Cingular to incorporate HSDPA into the CF-18 by way of a Novatel Wireless Expedite EU730 UMTS / HSDPA card, presumably a Mini PCI add-on. Nope, it’s not the first shot the ToughBook has had at having 3G in its lifetime — and we assume it won’t be the last — but this does add Panasonic to the short list of HSDPA laptop makers, as well as to the growing list of companies offering help in the way of laptop-internal 3G while remaining relatively (though never entirely) carrier agnostic.

Fujitsu-Siemens’ Lifebook Q2010 poised for release

Filed under:

We're a little too excited to type straight right now, but you would be too if you'd just found out that the "world's most desirable laptop" will be available in a mere sixteen days. That's right, the $5,000 Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook Q2010 -- yes, the one with HSDPA and that snazzy piano black finish -- is a little over two weeks from seeing the light of day, according to a rather uninspired "teaser" site recently posted by the company. Besides the inclusion of wireless 3.5G networking and a fashionable exterior, however, it's still not clear what makes this machine so desirable; for our five grand, we're hoping to see something like AMD's "4 x 4" platform packing four GPUs and two dual-core processors into this hot little 2.2-pound ultraportable -- is that really asking too much?

Sierra AirCard 875 brings 3.6Mbps HSDPA

Filed under: 875,SierraAircard875,aircard,edge,hsdpa,sierra,sierra aircard 875,umts — Paul Miller @ 12:32 pm

We’re a bit miffed that this new AirCard from Sierra isn’t coming in an ExpressCard form, especially now that good number of the major laptop manufacturers (Dell, Lenovo and Apple to name a few) are sporting ExpressCard slots in their newer models, but HSDPA is HSDPA and we’re glad to see it all the same. The device — a bump to last year’s 860 — supports 3.6Mbps (theoretical) speeds, which is as fast as anybody is doing it right now, and should provide for more than a few WiFi shaming connections to those with the cash and the infrastructure to enjoy it. Along with tri-band HSDPA and UMTS, the 875 can do quad-band EDGE/GPRS, so road warriors beware: you’re about to run out of excuses for lost connectivity — we’d think this one over if we were you. No word on price or initial availability.

As if this handsome little bugger wasn't already the "world's most desirable laptop," the Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook Q2010 won't just have Bluetooth, WiFi, 1GB RAM, a black "piano lacquer" finish, an eight-hour battery, a weight of about 2 1/2 pounds, and 3G -- it'll be 3.5G. That's right, T-Mobile Austria intends to equip the laptop with HSDPA data access for use on their high speed European network. The $5,000 price tag on the Q2010 just became that much easier to justify.

Samsung / SK Telecom PCMCIA data card: an HSDPA, EV-DO, WiBro love-in

Filed under: Samsung,SkTelecom,ev-do,hsdpa,pcmcia,sk telecom,wibro — Thomas Ricker @ 8:40 am

Prepare that national ego for a beating son, 'cause SK Telecom and Samsung have developed a Korea-only mobile data card sure to make you feel like a chump. Having just launched their HSDPA service days ago, it's no suprise to see Korea's largest mobile operator demonstrating a PCMCIA data card which supports both HSDPA and EV-DO. However, this card also packs in WiBro setting the stage for some good ol' fashioned head-to-head action against Korean Telecom. KT's WiBro service is set to go live in just days while SK's offering is only just now in pilot, with a limited commercial offering said to be starting next month when this card should drop for retail. But who knows, afterall SK's fledgling HSDPA service is said to offer equivalent speeds to KT's WiBro and at least initially the two complementary services are targeting the same market segments. So SK's not in a rush, if ya dig?

HTC Hermes becomes “XDA trion” for O2 Germany

Filed under: 3g,WindowsMobile,gsm,hermes,hsdpa,htc,o2,phone,umts,wcdma,wm2005 — Chris Ziegler @ 5:38 pm

It appears that one of the year's more hotly-anticipated Windows Mobile devices is getting ready to roll on O2 -- in Deutschland, that is. We've already seen the HTC Hermes all dolled up in O2 livery, and now it's gone live on O2 Germany's website as the "O2 XDA trion." While the T-Mobile variant's Samsung processor brings 300MHz to the table, O2 seems to be feeding the hungry masses with a bonus 100MHz and a pair of extra buttons around the d-pad, both welcome additions. The device takes 3G baby steps for now by launching with UMTS, but an upgrade to HSDPA is promised. Expected to drop sometime in July.

Motorola Q is set for launch next week

Remember a ways back when we told you that the Motorola Q was due for May 22nd? Well that might not have been so far off after all. Turns out Motorola has just announced that they will be releasing the Q "next week," a week which turns out to include May 22nd among its numbered days. The EV-DO phone will be out first for Verizon and Sprint, but there should be a Cingular UMTS version out by the end of the year -- a bit earlier than they previously stated -- and possibly even a HSDPA version if we're really lucky. They're billing the Q as a "BlackBerry killer," which is fine, but we're just glad they finally realised that releasing a product is an important part of the BlackBerry killing process.

T-Mobile releases HSDPA PC card in the UK

T-Mobile has just released a PC card for UK subscribers that will allow them to hop on the company’s HSDPA network when it goes live, and will also work immediately to access UMTS-speed data services. The purchase of a “web’n'walk” card, which has a quad-band radio for international — including US — use, also includes twelve free months of WiFi access at any of T-Mob’s UK Hotspots. Customers subscribing to 18 or 24 month data contracts at 17 pounds/month will receive the card for free, but need to keep an eye on their usage, as the fine print states that T-Mobile will warn, and possibly even shut off, customers who download more than 2GB of data in a given billing period.

NTT DoCoMo, Microsoft to form music download service

Filed under: DRM,NtttDocomo,f902is,hsdpa,microsoft,nttt docomo,windows media,wma — Marc Perton @ 1:22 pm

NTT DoCoMo plans to work with Microsoft to build a music service based on Windows Media. The service would not allow direct downloads, but would instead require music to be transferred from a PC to a cellphone. The service would work with Windows Media audio from over 100 providers, and will launch this summer on the F902iS (pictured), one of DoCoMo’s recently announced HSDPA-capable phones.

DoCoMo breaks out a slew of HSDPA phones

In typical DoCoMo fashion, they've introduced not one or two, but eight new phones today to kick off their FOMA 9 Series line. We can't find much solid dirt on these, but HSDPA is definitely a part of their new N902iX HIGH-SPEED, and their F902iS turned some heads with its PlaysForSure support, and the possibility of adding Windows Media Video DRM support in the future as well. Otherwise, our Japanese readership should keep an eye out for new models such as the D902iS, N902iS, P902iS, SH902iS, SO902iWP+, SH902iSL DOLCE SL, which will have such varied features in 9 Series as Push-to-Talk, Osaifu-Keitai e-wallet services, Omakase Lock data security, Chaku-moji ringback messages, Chaku-Uta multimedia apps, ToruCa mobile shopping information, and even home theater remote control. We'll let you know as more info trickles in from our phone-loving friends overseas.
