Tangled up in Bluetooth

Listen up LL Cool Stevie J.: would it be really so hard to get your engineering posse on building Bluetooth into the iPod? Seriously, we’d settle for even a Bluetooth dongle at this point, just so we wouldn’t have to get scrambled up in our headphones anymore. Because if you guys don’t come out with something soon, then we’re going to have to settle for these really mediocre things like this BluPod here — all it does is display caller ID info on your iPod and turn down your music accordingly (oh, and it adds an FM transmitter, too). Ok, nevermind this BluPod — just get going on that iPhone, m’kay?

Jobs boasts of Apple iPod cellphone?

Apple rumor dredgin’ site AppleInsider just hocked-up another canard for those of you feeling a bit shorted following WWDC 2006. AI reports that the obsessively closed-mouthed Steve Jobs is so giddy about the oft speculated iPod cellphone that he’s been blow-harding its merits amongst personal acquaintances. Sources touting an “unblemished track record” in predicting Apple’s future and familiar with the device’s “ongoings” claim that prototypes have already been released to two potential OEM manufacturing partners with a “big bang” launch coming earlier than expected — catching even industry insiders (such as themselves?) off-guard. Certainly analysts and believers alike have all but convinced themselves that some kind of iPhone device (like that pictured to the right) with or without an MVNO is a certainty. Still, it’s hard to believe that Jobs would break character in such loose-lipped fashion even if they weren’t sitting around doing nothing.

Wild speculation: iPhone to launch in August?

Filed under: Apple,MusicPhone,ROKR,cellphone,iTunes,iphone,music,phone — Chris Ziegler @ 1:33 pm

Alright, dear readers, you know the drill: proceed with caution. We have no confirmation here, but sometimes a tip is too juicy not to share, no matter how suspect it might be. A reader is reporting to us that a coworker's tech-unsavvy friend, who is regularly hired by Apple to do marketing photo shoots, was recently brought on to take some shots of "the sleekest, sexiest damn phone he's ever seen." The launch date? "Some time in August." Yeah, not a typo -- August. Now, to be perfectly clear, we don't know what the iPhone (if it exists) will be actually called, we've never seen a real pic of the elusive beast, and this doesn't really jive with the time frame suggested by Peter Oppenheimer's recent comments -- but we want to believe, and we don't have to wait very long for this one to get debunked or confirmed.

Apple on iPhone: “We’re not sitting around doing nothing”

Apple's been dogged with rumors of an iPod / phone hybrid (the real deal, not a rehash of a Moto E398 with iTunes support) for nearly as long as the iPod's been kickin' around. Apparently looking to beat the dead horse yet again, an analyst mentioned Sony's success with their Walkman line of music-oriented phones during Apple's Q3 earnings call, prompting CFO Peter Oppenheimer to respond with a fairly solid non-denial: "As regards cell phones, we don't think that the phones that are available today make the best music players. We think the iPod is. But over time, that is likely to change. And we're not sitting around doing nothing." Knowing Apple, of course, this is about the biggest admission we'll get until the iPhone actually drops, so relish in the moment, keep your eyes peeled in a year or so, and if you're really hard up, you could fashion your own, like the pictured Nokia 6682 makeover.

Think Secret dishes on Zune, future iPods

Apple rumor site Think Secret has been busy chatting it up with all those company insiders whom Misters Jobs and Gates would love to get their rich and powerful hands on, and turned those leaks into an article which dispels some of the recently-circulating iPod rumors, along with providing a few more tantalizing deets about Microsoft’s upcoming “iPod killer.” For starters, it looks like we shouldn’t be expecting the “true” video iPod until at least the annual MacWorld Expo in January — though larger capacity 5G ‘Pods may arrive in the interim — and apparently the long-rumored iPhone also won’t be coming anytime soon, as that project has reportedly been put on hold for the foreseeable future. Furthermore, when the 6G iPod is finally released, it will likely lack both the wireless capabilities and talking interface that some people have been anticipating; Apple is said to believe that the former feature would have too much of an impact on battery life, while the latter would only feed what’s seen as a marginal consumer demand. Finally, Microsoft’s so-called Zune — which is rumored to sport WiFi for communicating with MTV’s Urge service — may also come equipped with a powerful 400MHz processor suitable for gaming, as well as a built in tuner for receiving satellite radio broadcasts. Obviously all this info is just speculation from unnamed sources for now, but if the Zune does end up duping your iTunes tracks, playing high-quality games, and giving you access to Sirius or XM on the go, then Apple may be facing its first real marketplace battle in the iPod’s brief but influential existence.

European iPod Filings Confirm Apple Still Swiping Ideas

Apple Insider’s lede is a bit daft: “A recent series of design filings made by Apple Computer suggests the company may have intentions of abandoning its Click-Wheel interface in future versions of its iPod digital music players.” Taken collectively, the interface designs are clearly a work of inscrutable Apple skullduggery, slapping up iPods with control surfaces stolen from a variety of media players, including those from Toshiba and Creative. It’s some some of intellectual property beachhead I’m too ignorant to fully understand (but not to recognize).

The only real bit of news is that Apple might be considering using the iPod nano chassis for the iPhone. Makes sense—plenty will purchase the iPhone on the merit of the iPod brand alone, but it won’t hurt to appeal to those looking for something smaller than the RAZR, currently The People’s Phone.

Softbank denies iPhone rumors, kind of

Following a weekend of stiff-drinks and intrepid mulling, Vodafone Japan Softbank just went official regarding the supposed iTunes playing cellphone they are co-developing with Apple – officially denying it, that is. Well, kind of. See, our brethren over at Engadget Japan tell us that Softbank's response (in Japanese) to the claims made in that un-sourced Nikkei article are mere "speculation. The source is not us. We have nothing to say about it." Hmm, that sounds more like a plea to Apple not to kill the deal than a denial that they're in cahoots on the popularly dubbed, and oft speculated iPhone which is not pictured to the right.

Apple said to be working with Softbank on “co-branded” handset

Japanese news agency Nikkei is reporting that Apple and new Vodafone Japan owner Softbank are working together to develop cellphones capable of downloading and playing music from the iTunes store. Details are, of course, very slim at this point, as we don't even know whether to characterize this as a "true" iPhone, or simply a ROKR-like model featuring only software from the iPod manufacturer powering a non-Apple handset. However, Nikkei is quoting sources that say the phone, which may be released as early as this year (and which is definitely NOT pictured alongside this post), is expected to sport both Softbank and Apple branding, which may indicate that Cupertino will have a hand in developing the hardware as well. Whatever they're working on, we wanna know about it, and we won't rest until we have a ton of specs and pics for you.

Apple patents digital media reservation system

href="http://www.macsimumnews.com/index.php/archive/apple_files_patent_for_wireless_ipod_with_ringtones_micro_browser"> vspace="4" hspace="4" border="0" align="right" alt="" src="http://www.engadget.com/media/2006/05/Apple-patent-phone.jpg"
/>Time for another peek into the Apple patent
catalog for some gool ol’ speculation into that mysterious product pipeline which Steve Jobs called the “ href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/04/27/apple-has-media-center-contender-in-the-works/">best I’ve ever seen in my
life.” This time, a patent titled “reservation of digital media items” filed waaay back in December
2004 (but only published this week on the USPTO website) has broken free. Like the filing for the href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/05/04/apple-patents-audio-user-interface/">audio interface seen yesterday, this
patent again describes a system relying on the relative computing strength and fast network access of a PC / Mac
working together with a second, portable wireless device. This time however, the “portable wireless device”
is used to browse and then tag an item of interest from an “online media store” with the PC / Mac then being
used to purchase or preview the tagged item at a later time. The patent specifically references eBooks and ring tones
as some of the items of interest for download by a cellphone or wireless PDA. Now, If you’re a believer then this is
just further confirmation of that oft rumored and href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/22/benq-confirms-iphone/">all but href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/19/morgan-stanley-analysts-claim-apple-is-at-work-on-iphone/">confirmed href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/09/30/did-zander-just-confirm-the-apple-iphone/">iPhone. Or perhaps it’s just
insight into an extension of that crippled Moto
partnership. We don’t know. However, these filings do give some insight into Apple’s views on the continued importance
of synchronization between future portable devices and the PC/Mac digital hub.

iTunes 7.0.1 points to the iPhone, life moves on

Filed under: 7.0.1,Apple,IchatMobile,Rumors,applerumors,iTunes,iphone — Cyrus Farivar @ 2:14 pm

Filed under:

Throwing an iPhone rumor to the gadget-obsessed is a fair bit like burning paper in a fireplace — sure, things will flare up for a few seconds, but shortly thereafter the flames calm back down again. We recently caught wind of the fact that the new iTunes 7.0.1 update is packed with a bunch of text strings that say things like:” 4301.022″ = ” ^0 was not copied because the video format is not supported by the mobile phone ^1 .”; and so forth, implying that an iPhone is forthcoming. Now remember, we’ve seen similar language embedded in Apple software before, but we’ve yet to see an actual product, although the internet’s Magic 8 Ball as of late seems to be pointing to Macworld Expo 2007. But then again, we’ve heard for months now that our friends in Cupertino are working on such a device, with everyone and everything from analysts to patent filings saying as much; so we’re just hoping that Apple is waiting until it’s good and ready to release it. For all you Apple and iPhone fanboys, take a moment to do a little jig, and then resume your daily routine.
