LG intros Shuffle-esque UP3 Sharp and Flat DAPs

Filed under:

They say that you shouldn't fix what's not broken, which is probably why we see so many MP3 players on the market taking "design cues" from the iPod family, and now LG has introduced two more models that bear a striking resemblance to Apple's flash-based Shuffle (except for the color, obviously, although the original UP3 did indeed come in white). Both the UP3 Sharp and UP3 Flat pack either 512MB or 1GB of storage into that familiar looking package, with each unit supporting MP3, WMA, OGG, and ASF file formats. The differences here lie in the devices' displays (or lack thereof) and their battery life: the OLED-equipped Sharp (pictured above) gets two less hours of juice than the screen-less, 10-hour-rated Flat (pictured after the break). Expect to see both models in stores before the end of the month, but probably only in Korea.

LG’s GBW-H10N Blu-ray burner headed to Taiwan

Watch out BenQ, because your fellow countrymen over at LG also have a 3-in-1 Blu-ray burner poised for release, and not only does it write to BD-R discs at a blistering 4x speed, it’s coming to market several weeks before you’re getting your BW1000 out the door. In fact, LG’s Taiwanese subsidiary is claiming that the GBW-H10N internal drive will hit Chinese shores in the next few days, and at only $923, it’s something of a steal compared to dedicated players going for $1000 and up. Of course the BenQ model still holds a few key advantages over this unit, most significantly its ability to burn 50GB dual-layer Blu-ray discs as well as its faster write speeds for most recordable DVD and CD formats. So for now it looks like you’ll have to decide whether speed or capacity is the more important attribute, but as HDBeat alludes to, more competition in the market means that at least a few next-generation devices will probably have all the features you’re looking for.

BlueBird’s BM-300 Pocket PC does DMB too

It takes a pretty special phone-less PDA to pique our interest these days, and even though Korean manufacturer BlueBird's new Pidion BM-300 doesn't really push the envelope in areas like processor speed or screen resolution, the fact that they threw a DMB tuner into the mix puts this model in some pretty distinguished company. Besides the PM80 from LG, in fact, we're hard-pressed to think of another palmtop that sports a built-in digital TV receiver -- which is probably because there's little demand for this feature anywhere outside of Korea for now. Specs-wise, the WiFi- and Bluetooth-equipped BM-300 definitely comes out on top, as its 512MHz Bulverde CPU, 64MB/128MB RAM/ROM configuration and Windows Mobile 5.0 OS are all superior to what the LG model offers, though the two do share the same unfortunate 320 x 240 resolution. South Korean TV fanatics can expect these to hit stores sometime in October -- from the look of things, they need some time to polish up that design a little -- for a price that's yet to be announced.

LG’s 19-inch, 2ms Flatron L1970HR reviewed

So PCMag decided to run LG's 19-inch Flatron L1970HR LCD through their suite of tests to see if its 2-millisecond response time really performs as advertised, and the good news for gamers is that this display indeed delivers excellent motion performance with little ghosting and few artifacts. You're also getting good color reproduction and a contrast ratio of 1600:1 that sounds great on paper, but in reality you can expect some loss of shadow detail and noticeable compression at both ends of the greyscale. Another trade-off for that zippy response time is resolution, as the 1,280 x 1,024 pixel array may not be enough for hardcore gamers or folks working on documents and photos all day, with the biggest knock being the monitor's inability to render smaller-sized fonts. In the end, unless all that you're doing is watching movies and playing video games all day (in which case we'd like to hear more about your job), it sounds like super-smooth video may not be worth the sacrifices you're making in other departments.

The LG CG225: Cingular gets another low-end flip

Filed under: LowEnd,cg225,cingular,clamshell,flip,lg,low end,low-end — Chris Ziegler @ 6:31 pm

There are definitely LGs we'd rather see appear in Cingular's shipping lineup, but hey, the quad-band CG225 is free on contract after online rebate, has a VGA camera, dual color displays, and a speakerphone. The stub antenna is unfortunate, but all told the little clamshell doesn't look half bad -- and it's hard to complain about the price. Cheap backup phone, anyone?

LG’s KH1000 HSDPA slider for KTF

Filed under: KTF,SkTelecom,hsdpa,kh1000,korea,lg,sch-w200,sh100,sk telecom — Chris Ziegler @ 3:45 pm

It looks like SK Telecom and KTF are locked in a heated battle for Korean HSDPA supremacy, with both carriers having launched their 3.5G networks in the last month. So far, equipment is a toss-up, KTF having received a reskin of SK’s Samsung SCH-W200 and now this, LG’s KH1000, a remake of their SH100 for SK. LG takes a cue from Samsung here, swapping color schemes and d-pads, but leaving the phone’s innards intact (as best we can tell). Besides simply looking better than its Samsung stablemate, the KH1000 wins the cool factor, sporting an additional degree of slider freedom for two — count ‘em, two — keypads on the bottom and right of the phone. Naturally, the KH1000 isn’t expected outside Korea, but we’re pretty sure we couldn’t pony up the cash for it anyhow.

Verizon releases new LG V with V CAST Music

Filed under: LgV,VzNavigator,lg,lg v,v cast,vcast,verizon,vz navigator — Donald Melanson @ 6:52 am

Verizon Wireless has released an updated version of the LG V handset, which is actually the same as the old LG V handset, only now it supports Verizon’s V CAST music service and VZ Navigator turn-by-turn direction service. Even without those fancy new perks, the EV-DO-equipped LG V was a decently feature-packed phone, a 1.3 megapixel camera, full QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth, and a MicroSD slot. Verizon also still lists the new V as having an “embedded MP3 player” in addition to V CAST Music, which would be a change in strategy on Verizon’s part if true, as they’ve previously removed MP3 support on phones with V CAST (unless you buy Verizon’s logic that the phones do play MP3s so long as they’re convert to WMAs first). You can snag one for $149 with a two-year contract, or $199 for a one-year deal.

Unboxing the Chocolate

Ah, what could be better than a good, old fashioned unboxing? Not a lot, and in today’s episode we’d like to introduce you to the packaging and subsequent de-packaging of an LG KG800 Chocolate phone, courtesy of MobileBurn’s Brad Kellett. It’s only a few short, beautiful pictures, but because the likelihood of your having one in the States is so low, we’d like to show you how LG turned it out. (Hint: they did well.) Enjoy.

Verizon’s Chaperone offers invisible fence to parents

Filed under:

We’re still trying to get used to the idea of 8 year-olds toting cellphones, but operators have embraced their new clientele, developing phones and services tailored to their needs and the needs of their parental units. Verizon’s young’un offering, the GPS-enabled LG Migo, will be the first device to operate with their Chaperone service, which launches on Monday. For $10 a month, Chaperone lets a curious parent check on their child’s location, and for $20, Verizon can send alerts when the child crosses pre-set boundaries. We’re hoping the Migo doesn’t deliver a shock when an unsuspecting kid moves past their boundary, but it does look a little like a stun gun, does it not?

LG’s 1.48-mm TFT LCD

Filed under: LG Electronics,LgElectronics,TFT LCD,TftLcd,display,lg,panel — Thomas Ricker @ 10:31 am

Filed under:

No doubt, thin is most definitely in at the mo’. Now, with some help from LG Electronics, we’ll soon see a few more millimeters planed to the shop floor with the introduction of their new 1.48-millimeter sliver of an LCD. Besides being able to balance on a razor’s edge for photo ops, this wee TFT panel will drop in both 2.0 and 2.2-inch formats able to handle QVGA (320 x 240) resolutions. No word on when these might appear, but we’re pretty sure that Samsung’s rigs won’t be sporting ‘em.

Verizon drops LG VX8300

The replacement for one of Verizon’s first EV-DO V CAST phones, the VX8100, the VX8300 trades a MiniSD slot for MicroSD and adds Verizon’s notoriously sketchy flavor of Bluetooth (although DUN is officially supported, so maybe we’re okay here). That’s about it — the camera remains the same at 1.3 megapixels, and the VX8100′s silver case is traded for a more subdued black. Available immediately for $99 with contract.

LG’s FM35 DMB MP3 player

Yep, just your usual, run of the mill 2GB audio player in Korea — with DMB video. LG’s new sleek plasticy hotness, the FM35, obviously emulates the aesthetic success of their Chocolate Phone, and sheds its namesake to go straight for broadcast video; it’ll play four hours of DMB, or supposedly 55 hours of MP3, WMA, OGG, AVI, or ASF. You know the story about launch price, and date — even if we knew, it wouldn’t matter much since unless you’re reading this in Korea, you’re probably never gonna own one.

Sprint launches LG LX550 (Fusic)

There was little surprise in this one, but Sprint’s officially launched that LG LX550 as the Fusic. Sure, maybe it’s not the most skillfully named (or styled) phone we’ve laid eyes upon, but it’s got EV-DO, A2DP, an FM transmitter and radio, 1.3 megapixel camera, and MicroSD (bundled with 64MB) for $179.99 after rebate and two-year contract.

LG’s new skinny KG320 candybar

The folks at LG are no stranger to slim phones, and they look to have a winner with their new KG320. Beyond the 0.39-inch thick form factor (the same as Samsung’s recently launched T509) the LG phone features a 2.2 megapixel camera, 176 x 200 pixel screen, Bluetooth and a whole 128MB of memory. Playback isn’t bad neither, with support for MPEG4, MP3 and AAC files. It’s just a tri-band GSM unit, but the phone is headed for Europe in addition to the usual Asian targets, so here’s hoping for a US launch.

FCC approves two new ones from LG

Nothing too exciting, but it looks like the US might be getting a couple more handsets from LG: the VX8400 and VX8500. The VX8500 (pictured right) is a bit camera shy, and we’re otherwise short on deets, but we can tell it least has a camera, and it could be a slider — or something. As for the VX8400 clamshell (pictured left), the FCC was kind enough to share the manual, so we know it’s a musicphone with 128MB of storage, Bluetooth, a 2.2-inch 176 x 220 pixel screen, external color display and a 1.3 megapixel camera. The EV-DO phone also promises to have a 3D graphics GUI, so that should be exciting. Phone Scoop is predicting Verizon on this one, but no word on price or availability of either handset.

Samsung adds Premium Anyview plasma TVs with DVRs

Filed under: HDTV,Hard Drives,Samsung,anyview,lcd,lg,plasma,xcanvas — Marc Perton @ 11:48 am

Samsung has just upped the ante in its ongoing “anything-you-can-do-we-can-do-better” battle with LG. While LG’s most recent plasma and LCD TVs with built-in DVRs had hard drives that topped out at 250GB, Samsung’s new 42 and 50-inch Anyview models have 300GB of storage. Yeah, an extra 50GB is hardly a big deal (unless you run out of space while recording the season finale of “Lost,” that is). But it lets Samsung thumb its nose at its crosstown rival — for a few days at least. We have no doubt that LG will hit the market with a 500GB model very soon.

LG’s L1900 emotional LCD invokes smarminess

Filed under:

Looks like LG just updated their emotional series of monitors with their new L1900. Other than throwing a 2000:1 contrast ratio (was 1600:1), everything else looks pretty much the same — 4ms response, 1:1 aspect, and choice of different fashionable base colors and designs. Of course, that shiny suit wearin’ dude licked in gold trolling the display is new, but not likely included for the roughly $600 tag. However, if you place this pup conspicuosly near the window, well, you never know who might drop by.

SK Telecom launches HSDPA network with new Samsung SCH-W200

South Korean consumers looking for some serious mobile bandwidth need not wait until June to pick up one of LG’s SH100 handsets that we brought you earlier today, because SK Telecom has just announced that their HSDPA network is live in 25 cities as of today, and that a new model from Samsung is available for the rollout. Besides 2G, 3G, and 3.5G data support, the new Samsung SCH-W200 — which is the first of five impending HSDPA phones, including the SH100, that will available by year’s end — offers both a two megapixel as well as a VGA camera, S-DMB TV capabilities, MP3/AAC playback, text-to-speech, and perhaps most importantly with all these features, multitasking. Although theoretically capable of 12Mbps downstream traffic, SKT’s HSDPA network will currently only deliver a relatively pokey 1.8Mbps to the W200 — with 3.6Mbps promised for later this year — but claims to be the only WCDMA network in the world to offer guaranteed video conferencing performance through circuit, and not packet, switching.

LG’s dual-core, super-slim 14-inch XNOTE T1 laptop

Filed under:

Here’s another dual-core ultraportable to add to your drool-list (probably just due to its looks): LG’s latest superslim XNOTE laptop, the 14.1-inch T1. Unfortunately you’ll probably never see this piano black, 21.5-millimeter thick notebook over here in the States, which is a shame considering how many features they managed to cram into just a 4.2-pound package, most notably a dual-layer DVD burner, 5-in-1 media card reader, plus Bluetooth and 802.11a/b/g. Performance, though, is nothing to write home about, with the low end L2300 1.5GHz Celeron Duo processor, integrated graphics, and pokey 4200RPM 60GB or 80GB PATA drives probably making this model a non-starter for gamers or serious multitaskers. For simple web browsing, emailing, or DVD watching on-the-go, however, the 512MB to 2GB of RAM and optional 1,440 x 900 WXGA+ screen should prove more than adequate.

More sweet chocolate from LG: the “Black Label II”

LG just unveiled the next generation of its popular "Chocolate" phone at the recent Expo Comm Wireless Korea 2006, and it seems to maintain the same features and minimalist elegance as its predecessor in a slightly thicker package (16.5-millimeters versus the original's 15.3). Also called the "Black Label II" or by its model number, KV6000, this handset is primarily targeted at the fashion-conscious crowd who also want to snap a pic or rock out to tunes once in awhile, letting them load the 512MB of memory with up to 120 MP3 tracks. Starting price for this newest bit of Chocolate is around $530, but it will probably only be seen on the streets of Seoul for the time being.

LG U900 announced for Hutchison in Italy

Yeah, we know, we're getting a little granular on this one, but remember LG's then-unnamed swiveling DVB-H handset? The one with the weird vaguely W300i-like buttons? Well, it was officially announced in Italy as the U900, and will see service through Hutchison's 3 network with UMTS service and, of course, their exclusive Italian DVB-H broadcast rights to the World Cup. The 1.3 megapixel and VGA cameras won't hurt, nor the 58MB internal flash, but what will, however, is a 3 hour battery lifespan watching video. That's still more than enough for a match, though, which is all it really needs to be, we suppose.

Disney Mobile MVNO partnering with O2 for UK launch

Filed under: DisneyMobile,Sprint,disney mobile,lg,mickey mouse,mvno,o2 — Marc Perton @ 8:04 am

UK cellphone users just got their invitation to join the Mickey Mouse Club. Disney's MVNO, which launched in the US earlier this month, is set to roll out in the UK in partnership with O2. Like the US version of the service, which is powered by Sprint Nextel, the UK service will offer extensive parental controls. Specific handsets for the service have yet to be announced, though Disney has said that the phones will not be include extensive Disney character branding. In the US, the service features phones from a number of vendors, including the LG DM-L200 (pictured). The US service also includes a GPS tracking function; Disney has not commented as to whether the feature will be available to UK customers.
