Moto debuts new music-centric V3m alongside colorful V3i RAZRs

We can hardly blame Motorola for milking
their incredibly successful RAZR line for all it’s worth, and
that sure seems to be their plan at CTIA. Today Moto is busting out a brand new musicphone RAZR titled the V3m, which
sounds to be merely a V3i plus stereo
Bluetooth, with a microSD slot for up to 1GB of storage, and a 1.3 megapixel camera. We’re not sure if the phone
features iTunes playback or not, but we can’t say we’d miss it anyways. The CDMA phone is accompanied by another in the
W315, which sounds to be a no-frills clamshell, though we’re low on deets and without a pic. Motorola is also bringing
out some new spring colors for the RAZR V3i (pictured), including dark blue, maroon and violet. We’ll have hands-on
shots of these before long, so just sit tight.

Cingular and Radio Shack get Moto SLVR L6

align="right" src="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/media/2006/04/motoslvrl6.jpg" alt="" />If you dig the shape and
style of the SLVR L7 but don’t want to hand over $200 just
for the dubious privilege of being able to store 100 songs on it via iTunes, you may want to head over to Radio Shack,
which currently has an exclusive on the $50 (with Cingular service plan) SLVR L6. The cheaper phone has the same form
factor as its iTunes-enhanced sibling (though it’s clad in SLVR, er, silver, instead of black), and has most of L7′s
other features, including Bluetooth connectivity, EDGE, VGA camera and a built-in music player (which Radio Shack
claims supports iTunes, though we’re a little dubious). At $50, if you really can’t bear to be without 100 iTunes-based
songs, you can always use the $150 you’ve saved to pick up a refurbed 512MB shuffle and 100 songs, and come out even.

Moto to introduce NC800 EV-DO WiFi router?

Looks like Moto's jumping in the 3G WiFi router arena too soon enough, only their new NC800 isn't kind enough to the user to be carrier-independent and have a PC card slot for your choice of wireless broadband. No, the NC800 is straight up EV-DO Rel. 0, and comes also with your usual 802.11b/g, Ethernet ports, and firewall. Nothing special or out of the ordinary, in other words, but maybe if they get the price down to something reasonable they'll be able to snag a few customers.

Motorola to support Linux on half of future models

Perhaps we underestimated Motorola’s resolve a bit in pushing mobile Linux across its product lineup. Intelligence out of Taiwan is suggesting that Motorola not only wants a broad-scale adaptation of Linux on its handsets in 2007, but they want it on fully half of them. It’s safe to assume they don’t mean we’ll see Tux on every other Moto in 2007, but that’s when the grand consortium’s work starts to come to fruition — in theory, anyhow. Furthermore, Motorola’s not planning on relegating their Linux platform to low-cost devices; it’ll be an across-the-board solution with products in every market segment, with the majority of low- to midrange handsets supposedly falling in the $100 to $300 range. Given a choice between Linux and the oft-panned Synergy, we’ve gotta say, $300 is sounding mighty attractive.

Cingular’s September launches in writing (but not in stone)

We encourage everyone to take these tidbits with the usual boulder-sized grain of salt, but America’s favorite (read: only) HSDPA carrier has dropped their September launch grid, and on account of our friends’ slippery hands, it’s subsequently found its way over to Engadget HQ. Thanks to our own Boy Genius among countless other tipsters, nothing on the grid has really taken us by surprise — no UMTS 1900 N80s, for example — but we’re encouraged by Cingular’s (foolhardy?) optimism that the 8525 might yet see a release this month. Also allegedly along for the ride are the 3125, the oft-promised but rarely-delivered Nokia E62 (which turns out to be a lifetime exclusive for Cingular), the Samsung SGH-C417 that now appears to be on limited sale, and Sony Ericsson’s middling W300 Walkman flip. And, oh yeah, the Motorola L6 is in there, too. Don’t ask us.

MOTOKRZR goes retail in Hong Kong

Sprint, Verizon, and Cingular customers could well be in full holiday cheer before they get their freezing hands on Motorola’s hotly anticipated MOTOKRZR (alias Canary, alias K1), but for peeps on Hong Kong’s SmarTone-Vodafone network, it seems the seasons’ greetings have come a bit early this year. The best RAZR since… well, the RAZR has gone live on the operator’s website, retailing for HK$3,180 (about $400) on contract — a smidge steep, perhaps, especially considering that they’re pawning it contract-free for an extra HK$100, which by our humble calculations works out to about 13 bucks. Nonetheless, we’re guessing they won’t have trouble finding customers at the going rate.

Old, new, borrowed, blue: Motorola’s offerings at CTIA

No surprises from Motorola today, though we were able to spend some quality time with their upcoming RIZR and KRZR models. We were surprised at how light and solid the RIZR felt, especially considering we’re looking at a pre-production unit here. The matte, rust red finish was a nice touch, but check out the intricate design on the phone’s hindquarters after the break — it’s a unique detail and we hope this makes it to the production handset.

Also on display were the E680 and A1200 “MING” handsets. Why do they tease us so?

Motorola KRZR K1m drops in on Verizon sites

Filed under: VerizonWireless,k1m,krzr,moto,motokrzr,motorola,verizon,verizon wireless,vzw — Chris Ziegler @ 10:06 am

It looks like Verizon’s gearing up for the K1m variant of Motorola’s MOTOKRZR to drop any minute now, what with the slim RAZR successor making a variety of cameos across Verizon’s intranets these days. It was no secret that they’d be getting the phone, but now we have a price: $199 on a two-year contract, likely positioning it to do head-to-head battle with upcoming VX8600 Chocolate flip from rival LG. We still don’t have an exact date to pass along, but if history is planning on repeating itself yet again, we’re guessing we’ll see it before Sprint’s launch.

The combat-ready Motorola i615 for Nextel

Filed under: Sprint,SprintNextel,candybar,i615,iden,moto,motorola,nextel,sprint nextel,sprint-nextel — Chris Ziegler @ 10:06 am

Nextel’s always seemed to be a solid choice for those whose lot in life involves inflicting brutal damage to their phones. The trend continues with the military-spec i615, a candybar (though the term doesn’t really seem to do this thing justice) that makes up in ruggedness what it lacks in appearance. It comes packing Bluetooth, a speakerphone, and what appears to be a pretty healthy-sized display, but lacks Direct Talk for off-network walkie talkie action. The i615 can be had immediately (before you go and break another handset) for $250 on contract after discounts.

Motorola readying another PEBL-like phone for CDMA

As evidenced by the RAZR and its endless variants, Motorola knows a good thing when it sees one and likes to ride it into the ground — not necessarily a bad thing, especially when you consider that they’re shaping up to make a serious run at the coveted ‘#1 handset manufacturer’ title (don’t worry Nokia, we still love ya, and we don’t expect you to give it up without a fight). The PEBL’s been mostly content to stay in the RAZR’s huge shadow since its release, but its design cues are finally starting to find their way into Motorola’s CDMA stable, as first evidenced by Roc’s unearthing of the W315. Now, we have this little gem that just came across the FCC wires, looking even more PEBL-like than the W315 before it with a full-out etched metal keypad and internal antenna. No word on pricing, availability, or what carrier this might be bound for — those kinds of details aren’t really the FCC’s gig — but if we had to venture a guess, we’d say “less than the K1m,” “soon,” and “Verizon.”

T-Mobile rumors: RAZRs aplenty

Just when we all thought we could sit back and catch our breath after scooping T-Mobile’s Dash deets, rebranding, and myFaves launch, here comes a barrage of information suggesting that the carrier’s not about to let its product lineup rest on its laurels. Most of the information we have circulates around upcoming RAZRs — yes, we said “RAZR,” not “KRZR” — with a Nokia thrown in for good measure. We already suspected a tweaked V3i going by the new moniker “V3t” would be coming shortly, and it now seems the V3t will be available in a variety of flavors. Besides the stock model, two additional types will be made available with permanently etched tattoos (inspired by Miami Ink‘s Ami James, apparently) called “Dragon” and “Cherry Blossom.” If a tattooed V3t isn’t exclusive enough for you, step up to the Dolce & Gabbana V3i, which will confusingly go without the new V3t model name of its stablemates. All of the new variants should drop in retail locations on or around October 30. If RAZRs aren’t your thing, keep an eye out for the Nokia 6133 on October 9. The 6133 is essentially an Americanized 6131, rocking Bluetooth and a pushbutton flip feature that’s sure to earn a few “oohs” and “aahs” from friends.

Alltel next to get Motorola K1m

Filed under: alltel,clamshell,flip,k1,k1m,krzr,moto,motokrzr,motorola — Chris Ziegler @ 10:06 am

If you’ve got your heart set on a MOTOKRZR K1m but you’re not a Verizon customer, hold your horses — Verizon has strangely failed to secure an exclusivity agreement on this one, and odds are the CDMA carrier of your choice will be picking ‘er up before too long. Next up is Alltel, which is already taking preorders and looks to be shipping the curiously narrow RAZR successor on October 5. True, Alltel kiddies have had to wait a few more days than their Verizon brethren, but in exchange for the delay, they won’t have to deal with Verizon’s much-maligned custom UI.

Verizon to get its own MOTORAZR MAXX

We can almost hear the voices of skeptical readers whispering in unison, “fanboy Photoshop,” and we’d normally have half a mind to agree. After all, the bizarre gray exterior (just a reflection, perhaps?) seems incongruent with the rest of the phone, the contents of the external display are obviously faked, and the coloration of the Verizon logo doesn’t make a lot of sense — not to mention that the concept of a CDMA-based MOTORAZR MAXX is a bit… shall we say, new to us. Alas, it turns out the picture’s authenticity is rock solid (not to say it’s not a Photoshop job, but if it is, it’s an official one) seeing how we just downloaded it off Motorola’s official site for press multimedia. We know nothing about it besides what we’re seeing here, but truth be told, the picture alone is a lot to process: Verizon gets a strangely colored variant of a high-end RAZR we didn’t even know existed. It looks like a 2-megapixel cam is in the cards, and if the specs mirror its GSM cousin, we can expect a QVGA display, microSD expansion, and 50 odd megabytes of internal storage — not a bad piece to slot in right above the K1m, if we do say so ourselves. As soon as we catch wind of availability (or catch wind that Motorola is playing an extraordinarily unsportsmanlike practical joke on us), we’ll pass on the good word.

[Thanks, Pioneer]

Sprint announces Motorola SLVR L7c

Filed under: Sprint,SprintNextel,l7,l7c,moto,motorola,motoslvr,slvr,sprint nextel,sprint-nextel — Chris Ziegler @ 10:06 am

As expected, Sprint has come forth today with their very own SLVR from Motorola, the L7c — the latest in a barrage of popular Moto products conspicuously missing from Sprint’s lineup until just very recently. The announcement is particularly notable for two reasons; first and foremost, Sprint’s press release marks the first carrier introduction of the CDMA SLVR anywhere. The more interesting secondary story here, though, is that Sprint has finally beaten Verizon to the punch in announcing an anticipated handset — music to the ears of Sprint customers that have watched their carrier sit idly by as their rival scoops hotness after hotness. Sprint hasn’t yet announced pricing or availability for the L7c, but now that they’ve laid their… uh, SLVRs out on the table, we’re thinking it won’t be long now.

Motorola MOTOFONE F3 gets by FCC

Filed under: LowCost,candybar,f3,fcc,low cost,low-cost,moto,motofone,motorola,scpl — Chris Ziegler @ 10:06 am

The FCC is many things to many people, but for us, it’s a library and an informant. In its latter capacity, the agency has scooped literally dozens upon dozens of phones for us; in its former, it serves as one of the most comprehensive sources of mobile phone user’s manuals on the ‘net. They’re putting on their starched, three-piece suits and playing their librarian role this time around, releasing a cornucopia of PDFs relating to Motorola’s low-cost MOTOFONE F3. The draft manual is a breath of fresh air for the manual haters among us — we know who you are — if it carries through to production in its current form, bearing just 10 (yes, ten) panels of important information on what appears to be a foldable pamphlet. Ultra low-end or not, we have to admit an irrational excitement is building around Engadget HQ to play around with this thing — especially if the brief documentation suggests it’s going to take like 90 seconds to learn.

From the “They still make those?” dept.: Motorola’s M710

Yeah, we knew Motorola was still committed to making old-school car phones — heck, Telus carries one of ‘em — but we still can’t help but chuckle a little when we catch wind of a new one in the pipeline. The latest, dubbed M710, rides on Motorola’s own iDEN, suggesting that it might find its way to Nextel at some point (or not; after all, Telus operates an iDEN network north of the border, as do a good number of carriers across the world). Given the M710′s supposed lease in life as a commercial device, iDEN seems like the perfect fit considering that corporate customers account for an overwhelming majority of their base, but we’re still somehow having a difficult time picturing anyone taking this over an i880.
