Sprint gets last laugh, shipping 700p before VZW

We've been really tossed every which way on this "who's shipping the 700p first" debacle, but it looks like Sprint wins in the end. Even though Verizon just "announced" 700p availability, their phones are shipping shipping in 3-4 weeks, while Sprint is still on track for the end of this month. These ship dates are from Palm itself, and we think they'd be in the know if anyone is, so we're going to put our necks out one more time and proclaim Sprint as the (probable) first to ship the 700p.

[Thanks, Dave Z.]

Palm Treo 700p now available from Verizon

Filed under: 700p,PalmOs,VerizonWireless,palm,palm os,treo,verizon,verizon wireless — Thomas Ricker @ 12:00 am

Ok Treo fans, best get a-clickin' because Verizon is first from the gate with the launch of the Palm Treo 700p. Just don't freak when you see the VZW asking price of $399 $499, mkay? They'll be knockin' off an additional hundie once the total is tallied in hopes of making you feel special about your lack of WiFi support. Now hold tight if you're just gagging for Sprint's service -- we expect they'll be getting the lead-out any day now.

The Pipeline: Pundits dish on MacBooks, XM Inno and Treo 700p

Filed under: 700p,700w,fleishman,inno,macbook,mossberg,palm,palm os,pogue,treo,xm — Marc Perton @ 9:03 am

Welcome back to The Pipeline, a weekly feature where we dig through the mainstream media and see what the pundits, prognosticators and and pencil pushers have been discussing over the past week.

Unlike some recent weeks, there was no single tech story that dominated the mainstream media this week. Yes, most journos dutifully covered Apple's two big events -- the launch of the MacBook and the opening of the company's New York store -- but Apple didn't get the same sort of monolithic coverage that, say, the Samsung Q1 garnered a couple of weeks ago. In fact, one of the few mainstream media MacBook reviews we came across this week was written not by The New York Times' David Pogue or The Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg, but by blogger Glenn Fleishman, slumming it in his day job at the Seattle Times. Fleishman praised the new non-laptop for its upgradability, iSight camera and ability to add a second display, but pointed out that its integrated graphics make it a less-than-ideal choice for anyone doing video-intensive work -- which we assume is part of Apple's plan to find a way to get at least some consumers to pay $2,000 and up for the MacBook Pro, with its ATI Radeon X1600 GPU.

Elsewhere, Walt Mossberg had a timely review of the Pioneer Inno -- timely, of course, because the product is now the subject of a lawsuit by the RIAA over its ability to save tunes from XM radio for timeshifting purposes. He found the Inno's "reception problems" to be a "killer flaw," pointing out that he had a hard time getting a clear signal in Washington, DC, a low-rise city that is home to XM's HQ. Mossberg also found the device's software confusing and frustrating, and said that the Inno was the kind of product unlikely to appeal to anyone other than "hardcore XM fans." Alas, we somehow doubt this will stop the RIAA from trying to sue it out of existence.

In The New York Times, David Pogue checked out the Treo 700p, and declared it "a communicator with immense power." Comparing it to the 700w, Pogue said that the Palm OS version's software is "a help instead of a hindrance."  While we have to admit to something of an affinity for the Palm OS , we can't help but think that Pogue's review is a little of an apples-and-oranges job. A better comparison would be between the Treo 650 and the 700p, given that both run the same OS, and the latter is essentially an upgrade to the former. Based on such a comparison, we'd agree with Pogue's pleasure at having EV-DO built in, and being able to use DUN out of the box, features that could make this a worthy upgrade if you're a Palm OS fan and want high-speed access. However, we're still frustrated by the lack of WiFi, and can't help but notice that Palm OS 5.4 is starting to feel a little old. But until an ALP-based Palm shows up (or we break down and learn to love WinMo -- which is becoming more likely with each passing day), this will have to do.

Palm Treo 700p approved by FCC

As much as we'd like to blame other parties for the long wait for Palm's Treo 700p (and we will, we will), there's one source for at least some of the wait: the FCC. According to public filings, the smartphone just cleared the government agency, paving the way for its impending rollout. Of course, Palm did file a confidentiality request with the FCC, so we're not entirely clear exactly when this baby got the thumbs up, but the important thing is that it did, which means nothing (short of mobs at Sprint and Verizon's stores) should stand in your way if you're planning on picking one up very soon.

Verizon Treo 700p: $400 with 2-year contract

If you were hoping to play Sprint and Verizon off of each other and try to get a better deal on the Treo 700p, the jig is up. Verizon's pricing is now out, and the company is charging the same price as Sprint for the new Palm-based smartphone: $400 (with a two-year contract, that is). Calling plans with unlimited data start at $80 a month, and if you want to use your Treo as an EV-DO modem with your laptop (which we suspect you just might), be prepared to add an extra $15 a month. And, no, it still doesn't have WiFi.

DHS looking to satellites, mesh networks for emergency communications

Seeking to avoid the communication breakdowns that occurred as a result of the September 11th terrorist attacks and the Hurricane Katrina disaster, the Department of Homeland Security is developing an emergency network that would let officials email one another even in the absence of a cellular infrastructure. The DHS’ Advanced Research Projects Agency, which is analogous to the Pentagon’s DARPA, is looking at a number of options to keep the data flowing following an emergency, including widespread deployment of mobile mesh networking technology or re-purposing some of the government’s legacy satellites to handle terrestrial communications. This latter option is particularly attractive because some sats could offer transfer rates in excess of 100Mbps, and in fact a trial program is scheduled for this summer that will employ modified BlackBerries and Treos to send secure, satellite-based email between Homeland Security officials and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Palm Treo 700p announced

Yep, we were expecting it any day now (well, today actually) — now here it is. Looks like Sprint was definitely more the leaky ship on Palm Treo 700p‘s impending launch, being that we only caught wind of Verizon’s version a few times, but it looks like neither carrier snagged the exclusive on Palm’s latest PalmOS (not ALP) based smartphone. The latest step in unifying the Treo family as a hardware platform, the 700p (like the 700w) features EV-DO, 312MHz Xscale CPU, 128MB flash memory (60MB usable), 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and SDIO. Unlike the 700w, however, it works it with the same 320 x 320 resolution screen as the 650 (remember, WinMo 5.0 doesn’t support that res), so there’s at least one tangible benefit to this device if you’re not sure whether Palm or Windows is your bag. We’re just glad this thing’s finally announced — it’s not like we didn’t know, you know? Stay tuned for official launch dates and release prices.

Update: Interesting info. Phone Scoop called to let us know a few hurtful details about the 700p. First, their SDIO slot won't support WiFi (which is like, half the point). Apparently they think EV-DO should be enough. It also does not support voice dialing over Bluetooth, nor does it officially support SD cards over 2GB. However it does come with a basic version of PocketTunes -- but lacks PlaysForSure support. D'oh indeed.

Palm 700p announcement leaked

Filed under: 700p,Sprint,VerizonWireless,palm,verizon wireless — Paul Miller @ 3:05 am

After completely failing to keep this device on the DL for the past month or so, Palm has managed to even blow the official announcement, since TechWorld accidentally posted the release a bit early. The article, titled “Palm version of Treo 700 arrives,” confirms that the phone will be announced on May 15th, just like CNET said, and will be released by both Sprint and Verizon for operation on their EV-DO networks. The piece also mentions a 1.3 megapixel camera, 128MB of memory, a 312MHz Intel XScale processor, and DUN capability. The 700p is referred to as the second of four devices to be released this year, which bodes well for people holding out for the other rumored models.

Treo 700w coming to Sprint this summer

Treo 700w single

By now pretty much everyone (at least everyone who cares) knows full well that Sprint is getting ready to intro Palm’s new Treo 700p sometime later this month, but what’s been a little less clear is when (if ever) Sprint was going to get the Treo 700w, the Windows Mobile-powered version which Verizon currently has an exclusive on. Well, we don’t have an exact release date, but a highly reliable source has been able to confirm for us that Sprint will indeed be getting the Treo 700w and that they’ll be launching it about four to eight weeks after they launch the Treo 700p.

P.S. – Yup, that’s the Verizon version of the 700w pictured above; we have yet to see any images of the Sprint-branded version.

Palm Treo 700p to arrive next Monday?

We’ve heard just about every date imaginable for the long-awaited launch of the Palm Treo 700p, so nothing will really shock us now. But according to CNET, the 700p is due to arrive next Monday, May 15th. That’s nearly two weeks earlier than the last rumored launch date we heard about, May 28th, but is consistent with earlier rumors that pointed to a Sprint rollout next Monday. At this point, we won’t be surprised if both dates turn out to be correct, with an announcement on Monday, and availability in Sprint stores on the 28th.

Palm Treo 700p to launch May 28th?

Looks like Sprint may have slightly delayed the launch everybody, to May 28th, according to what appears to be an internal launch calendar that was leaked to TreoCentral's discussion boards. It pretty much clearly outlines the Treo 700p getting launched alongside the Blackberry 7130i and LG LX550 -- which seems a little odd that they'd cloud the launch of a new flagship smartphone with two slightly less buzzworthy devices. That is unless they want these phones to ride the Treo's coattails. Either way, guess now we'll know what's up if and when mid-May passes without word about the phone.

P.S. - Did you know it's Sprint's five-star service month? All other months are apparently four or less stars. So be warned, if you have to call for support, contract issues, service changes, or anything else that might require you speaking to a Sprint rep, do it in May.

Treo 700p gets a price?

Hang on to your pensions, 401ks, and pocketbooks people, it sounds like the Treo 700p may just have a price. According to some Radio Shack employees -- or people posing as Radio Shack employees -- when the Palm Treo 700p debuts, it'll set you back $679.99 retail with no service agreement, and $529.99 with new two-year contract. Howch -- significantly more than the $399 / $499 two year / one year prices we heard about before. Of course we've now way of knowing whether these prices are real, let alone solid and official, but if they are, boy oh boy are we gonna have to be quick to the draw on asking for a raise.

AKU2 for Treo 700w available for download again

Just as suddenly as it disappeared from the Palm website, the AKU2 update for Windows Mobile 5.0-powered Verizon Treo 700ws has reappeared for download, giving Palm customers access to the push email that they've been so eagerly awaiting. According to Brighthand, Palm pulled the original version of the firmware because of a "glitch" that made some users unable to update. Besides the Messaging and Security Feature Pack that enables synchronization with Exchange servers, the Treo 700w Updater 1.10 also includes some minor tweaks to the device's image and video application, and a new interface for the wireless connection manager.

Alright everyone, it's time for your daily crappy cameraphone pic of the Palm Treo 700p, or what we're now referring to as Palm's worst kept secret to date. Dude who took the shots, GXMONT, was apparently kicking it with an SRR Manager (whatever that is) who busted out this 700p and coolly allowed him to take shots. Lesson to all people who kick it with industry connections: always carry a real camera. Anyhow, according to GXMONT this'll be out early May, which is a couple weeks ahead of schedule by our understanding. 'Nother day, 'nother 700p shot (or two, or ten); funny how silly we're all going to look when it turns out this thing isn't real (yeah right).

Alright, this is just getting silly. Either Palm's much rumored -- and quite anticipated -- 700p is the worst kept secret in the industry, or the fakesters are getting a whole lot better. The newest pics are from a supposed Verizon employee, and shed light on that logo a bit below the Verizon branding on the back. Turns out it says "Access powered," which could be good news for those waiting for an update to the aging Palm OS, or it could merely mean that Access is getting its branding out on Palm OS 5 devices while they continue to work on ALP. Our fingers are crossed for ALP, but here's a better idea: why doesn't Palm/Verizon/Sprint/someone just release the dang device and let us find out for ourselves?

You aren't sick of seeing shots of what is supposed to maybe probably should be the Palm Treo 700p, are you? No? Good, because we'd like to introduce the latest blurry cameraphone set, now with Verizon branding. Yes, Verizon Palm users, rejoice (tentatively, anyway)! Sprint users, however, should beware; even though we heard from a pretty reliable source that this thing was getting a Sprint launch about this time next month, you know how Verizon loves to swoop in with those handset exclusivity contracts. We're not saying Sprint users won't be getting this thing first, but things are definitely looking up for Verizon peeps.

deal of credence in, is reporting that "very reliable sources" have informed them that there is no such
creature as the Treo Hollywood. The
Hollywood, which first appeared in a Saigo Investments report last year along with another model known as the href="http://engadgetmobile.com/search/?q=lowrider">Lowrider, was said to be a more stylish 3G-enabled Treo for the
antenna-hating European market. Even more intriguing were href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2006/03/20/first-shots-of-the-treo-hollywood/">pictures href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2006/03/22/more-pics-show-antenna-free-treo-to-be-more-of-a-lowrider/">that have

Treo with blue highlights that were said to be Hollywood, but which Brighthand is now discounting as possibly just a
restyled GSM version of the 700w. Stay tuned to this station
folks, because Palm’s plans for this year just got a lot more open-ended.

Palm Treo 700w Updater for AKU2 / MSFP on the web

We hit you guys up
a couple weeks ago with the news that Palm was going to be releasing the href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2006/04/06/palms-treo-700w-gets-its-aku2-on/">AKU2 update for Windows Mobile 5.0
for the Treo 700w in short time. Well, hope you got all your biz backed up, because it’s time to get it on! The
35MB Palm Treo 700w Updater 1.10 is up over on their site, but caveat emptor: Palm advises you absolutely do not
restore from Sprite Backup backups unless you aren’t restoring registry settings. We can imagine why, so we suggest you
heed their advice if you’re the WinMo registry hacking type.

[Thanks, Andrew]
