Ok Treo fans, best get a-clickin' because Verizon is first from the gate with the launch of the Palm Treo 700p. Just don't freak when you see the VZW asking price of $399 $499, mkay? They'll be knockin' off an additional hundie once the total is tallied in hopes of making you feel special about your lack of WiFi support. Now hold tight if you're just gagging for Sprint's service -- we expect they'll be getting the lead-out any day now.

In an exciting development for Java-enabled cellphone owners, and a bit of an embarrassing reminder of the Palm operating system’s major limitation, Sun and Samsung have just announced a new platform that will allow regular handsets to multi-task certain applications. Called Multi-tasking VM Ware, or MVM, the new platform is built on the standard Java API, which will let existing Java applications run simultaneously even on non-smartphone models. Although we don’t know when this technology will hit the market, considering that the lack of multi-tasking is one of the biggest drawbacks of most phones, it should prove to be a popular feature once available. Sprint may have missed out on an exclusive Treo 700P offering, but at least they plan on being first to market. Sure, the 700P is missing WiFi support and a few other notable exclusions, but if EV-DO and the promise of watching Sprint TV on that 320 x 320 screen is your PalmOS siren song then get ready — Sprint will be kicking these out the door at the end of the month for $399.99 green after available discounts and promotions. Meaning, you’ll likely have to sign up for a two-year commitment which is pretty much what we expected anyway and exactly what the WinMo 700W went for when it was launched.

Update: Interesting info. Phone Scoop called to let us know a few hurtful details about the 700p. First, their SDIO slot won't support WiFi (which is like, half the point). Apparently they think EV-DO should be enough. It also does not support voice dialing over Bluetooth, nor does it officially support SD cards over 2GB. However it does come with a basic version of PocketTunes -- but lacks PlaysForSure support. D'oh indeed.

It pretty much clearly outlines the Treo 700p getting launched alongside the Blackberry 7130i and LG LX550 -- which seems a little odd that they'd cloud the launch of a new flagship smartphone with two slightly less buzzworthy devices. That is unless they want these phones to ride the Treo's coattails. Either way, guess now we'll know what's up if and when mid-May passes without word about the phone.

P.S. - Did you know it's Sprint's five-star service month? All other months are apparently four or less stars. So be warned, if you have to call for support, contract issues, service changes, or anything else that might require you speaking to a Sprint rep, do it in May.

Dude who took the shots, GXMONT, was apparently kicking it with an SRR Manager (whatever that is) who busted out this 700p and coolly allowed him to take shots. Lesson to all people who kick it with industry connections: always carry a real camera. Anyhow, according to GXMONT this'll be out early May, which is a couple weeks ahead of schedule by our understanding. 'Nother day, 'nother 700p shot (or two, or ten); funny how silly we're all going to look when it turns out this thing isn't real (yeah right).

Alright, this is just getting silly. Either Palm's much rumored -- and quite anticipated -- 700p is the worst kept secret in the industry, or the fakesters are getting a whole lot better. The newest pics are from a supposed Verizon employee, and shed light on that logo a bit below the Verizon branding on the back. Turns out it says "Access powered," which could be good news for those waiting for an update to the aging Palm OS, or it could merely mean that Access is getting its branding out on Palm OS 5 devices while they continue to work on ALP. Our fingers are crossed for ALP, but here's a better idea: why doesn't Palm/Verizon/Sprint/someone just release the dang device and let us find out for ourselves?

Enough with that sketchwardo, sparkle blue, antenna-free Treo we've been seeing around, these new pics seem to be more like the real "Hollywood" deal. Just as rumored, the phone is slimmer than the 700 and 650, and antenna free as well. The profile actually looks a bit BlackBerry-esque, but the front is all Treo. Palm OS loyalists among us won't so excited to see Windows Mobile 5.0 running on this thing, but just keep in mind Ed Colligan's word that Palm OS isn't going anywhere, we're sure a Palm OS version of this unit will follow soon. There's no carrier branding on this unit, but the tipster reported 67KB/s speeds on Cingular's UMTS 1900 network, along with a 300MHz processor, 1.3 megapixel camera, and that fairly tried 240 x 240 display. Of course, these pics are a bit blurry, and we shouldn't expect the gospel truth on this device until Palm trots it out at a press conference (if then), but it's looking good so far.

Last we heard from our insider in the biz, Palm was going to be launching their PalmOS-powered Treo 700p sometime around or on Monday, May 15th. Not it would seem Gadgets on the Go's got word from a source they deem reliable that the 700p's got a price: $399 for a new 2 year contract, $499 with 1 year contract.  (Oh, they also confirmed our release time frame -- mid May ideally, early June at latest.) That sounds about right if you ask us, but there's only one way to find out: wait for the launch. Ok, well, two ways: we'll keep on inquiring, ourselves. Stay tuned, Treo nuts.

The long wait is over for Palm enthusiasts, as the highly-anticipated but seemingly always out-of-reach BlackBerry Connect service is finally available for Treo 650 owners -- specifically, future 650 owners who are in one of the seven non-US markets covered by Singapore-based SingTel, the sole carrier offering the service at rollout. We first heard word of a BlackBerry service for Treos last October, and more recently saw the Connect service working "in the wild" at 3GSM, which takes all of that push email goodness and formats it into an interface familiar to Palm OS users. SingTel will be offering the 650 for a very reasonable $186 to customers who sign up for the $38/month BlackBerry Enterprise Solution Unlimited Local Data Usage Plan through May 12th.

Sorry, this isn’t a full-featured Skype client (not that we expected one, ever) loooong available for PocketPC devices. Rather, EQO is now providing a beta J2ME client for your Palm OS device which must run along-side a PC plugin (yes, your PC must be running and connected to Skype for this to work) all linking up with EQO’s service to bridge the whole shebang and provide users the ability to make and receive Skype calls, send IMs, and view their Skype buddies' on-line status. Hey, no one said it would be easy... but judging by feedback in the EQO community forum, it seems to work.

The recent months have been dark days indeed for the Palm OS, especially for its spiritual successor, codenamed Access Linux Platform (ALP). Palm is letting its license to the oft-delayed OS expire this December, and we haven’t heard of too many device manufacturers stepping in its place. The good news is that Access-owned PalmSource hasn’t been just sitting around a doing nothing, and they recently hosted a one day mini-conference at LinuxWorld to show off their wares so far. Apparently the core OS is fairly completed, and PalmSource is mainly working on the bundled applications that will ship with the OS. Classic Palm OS emulation is said to work perfectly well, even with the requirement by the OS to scale those 320 x 320 native applications to ALP’s preferred QVGA touchscreen resolution. There were plenty of Haier N60 flip-phones on hand running the chosen res, along with a few prototypes with VGA screens and a keyboard — a good sign of things to come. Unfortunately, the only pics allowed were of the developer tools running a virtualized version of ALP in Ubuntu — a boon to developers, but no device-based eye candy for us. The biggest enhancement so far is multitasking afforded by the Linux base, though sexy features in the NetFront browser, new HotSync interoperability standards, and a newfound return to Palm OS looks of yore seem quite popular as well. In fact, with the OS’s ability to be skinned with SVG graphics, Palm could conceivably make a branded version of the OS that would be quite familiar to old users, and dub it the Palm OS 6 we’ve always wanted. PalmSource says they’re still on track to deliver the OS to licensees at the end of the year, with the first ALP products finally emerging next spring.
