Sony shipping silver PS2 to the States October 24th?

Sure, most Sony fanboys these days are probably saving all their pennies for one of those shiny PS3s just around the corner, but if they can’t quite swing enough hundies to grab a next gen unit along with enough games to keep them occupied, they can always settle for this “limited edition” silver PS2, which looks to be quite shiny in its own right. GameStop has been listing the $130 unit for pre-order for a while now, but now we’ve got word from a Target employee that confirms the price and date (October 24th) and reveals the quantity of the limited edition run: 500,000. While we’d hardly call that a limited edition with a new console on the way and current-gen sales waning, it’s good to have this silver edition finally in the States after eyeing those Japanese units jealously for a year and a half. It’ll also go well with that silver PSP we spotted last month, though hopefully we won’t have to wait quite as long for that one to get here.

The pink PS2 hits UK in November

It’s a little late in the game for you to have to justify a PS2 to your ladyfriend, and it’s way late in the game if your ladyfriend is of the ilk to want a PS2 of her very own. That said, as we all know well from Motorola and their best-selling RAZR, when you’re late getting your new product out the door, the thing to do is release the old product in a new color. Enter the pink PS2. We’re not yet entirely sure when (or if) it’s hitting US shores, but it’s launching on the 8th of November over in Old Blighty. Oh, and for our gamer pals across the pond: thanks to the Leipzig Games Convention, which kicked off today, you’ll see a dip in price of that PS2 as well. It’ll only set you back £94.99 and €129.99 now, which doesn’t help us over in the States too much, but we can’t complain as our PlayStation 2s still cost significantly less.

Reason #437 for all that bulk: PS3 has a PS2 inside

Filed under: BackwardsCompatibility,Sony,backwards compatibility,playstation,ps2,ps3 — Paul Miller @ 3:35 pm

Filed under:

According to a a report from Japan's Ultra One magazine, the PS3 will contain a whole PlayStation 2 chipset inside its massive hulk in order to ensure backwards compatibility. Word is that while Sony has claimed the PS3 is powerful enough to handle full PS2 emulation, the actual software isn't ready yet, so they'll use PS2 chips as a stopgap while they finish up. Obviously, the pricey hardware will mean even more losses to Sony at launch, but supposedly once they figure out emulation they'll pull the chips to lower their costs. If this all turns out to be true, it wouldn't be the hugest surprise, since Sony did the very same thing with the PS2 to gain compatibility with the original PlayStation. The Ultra One article had a few other tidbits of note, including a quote from Sony's Izumi Kawanishi stating that the PS3, as it was announced, is "nothing more than just the basic system." Sony apparently has plenty of upgrades in store for the console, which could make PS3 one of the most diversified (and probably expensive) pieces of "standard" hardware going in the gaming world. They did say that they won't be breaking compatibility, and even if it happens by accident, the console can accept updates over the Internet. Also, the magazine states the console has a "large amount of flash memory," so that no matter what hard drive you end up with, you'll always have the system software running from the included flash.

The Big Three’s consoles: size matters

Filed under:

Just thought you'd like to know. And yeah, even thought it's not the stylingest, we think aesthetically (if not the Wii then) the PStwo is probably our fav. But that's just us.

P.S. -We understand the Wii's not 100% accurately represented here. Looks pretty close though.

Sony’s PlayStation 2 now only $129.99

Filed under:

Remember way back in October of the year 2000, when Sony introduced the PlayStation 2 for $299.99? Yeah, that was a long time ago, but if you still don't have one, don't feel like getting a 360 or waiting any longer for the PlayStation 3 -- whenever the hell that'll be released -- or just want another PS2 for around the house, you'll be pleased to know Sony once again dropped the price on the PS2. Now the diminutive console will run you $130, down twenty bucks since the console's standing price since its last cut about two years ago. They're still not gonna beat out Nintendo's ever-cost effective $99 GameCube, but hey, when it comes to games, we know for a lot of people it just ain't about the price.

Novotable offers ergonimically-questionable retro, PC, and console gaming

We're pretty sure you don't see many tabletop arcade games around anymore for a reason -- mainly, it's not very comfortable to hunch over a screen for more than few minutes. Luckily for us, our poor PacMan and Centipede skills (and perpetual lack of quarters) made this mostly a non-issue in our arcade-trolling days, but now a new product called the "Novo Infotainment Table" (or Novotable for short) is offering to bring spine-curving videogame action for yesterday's hits and today's PC and console titles right to our homes. The Novotable is basically a 32-inch LCD mounted horizontally onto an articulating stand, attached to a pair of arcade joysticks, and stuffed with a subwoofer, Shuttle PC, and your choice of PS2 or Xbox. You also get a a stainless steel keyboard to swap out the controllers in case you want to use your multi-thousand dollar device (actual price: unknown, but presumed high) for something other than playing the biggest pixelated hits of the 80's, plus the usual lineup of PC features that you'd expect to find on a Shuttle, such as WiFi, Bluetooth, and FireWire and USB ports. We could see installing a few of these in a bar for some drunken Rampage fun, but the Mansion gameroom only accepts original pinball and arcade cabinets, so no Novotable for us, thanks.
