Man Stuff - The Best of Uncrate

Filed under: Best of, man stuff, roundups, uncrate — Gizmodo @ 1:01 am

uncrate-july-4.jpgThis week at Uncrate: Motorola drops the poorly-named phone bomb on us with the KRZR and RIZR. We get all nostalgic over the 1989 Upper Deck Baseball Wax Box. And the new Boss Selection fragrance for men lets us quit showering but still smell like a summer breeze. Plus, we make good use of the normally lazy and useless sunlight with the Solar LED Address Numbers, and check out the new Taking Back Sunday album and the Lost Episodes of Chappelle’s Show. We also desperately try to come up with something to celebrate so we can enjoy one of the Davidoff 100th Anniversary Cigars and drink some old-man scotch out of the cool Swivel Liqueur Glasses. Finally, the super hardcore Zenith Defy Xtreme Open Watch impresses us and every man on the planet, while we show our love for USB bondage with the Mr. P Cord Organizer.

Intel Core 2 Duo News Roundup

Filed under: PCs, core 2 duo, core 2 extreme, intel, roundups — Gizmodo @ 8:15 pm

We’ve had some Intel Core 2 Duo news today, starting with the bit about Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme shipping!

Then there’s our hands-on with a custom version of the Dell Precision Workstation 390. The machine was pumped so full of goods it was almost four times the price of the basic $1,050 configuration. The result? Fast and quiet.

Then there’s the latest Alienware Area-51 PC, which will run you $5,000. If you’re a little thriftier, there’s the $2,400 Dell XPS 410 with a Core 2 Duo E6600.

iPodweek - The Best of iLounge

Filed under: Best of, ilounge, ipodweek, roundups — Gizmodo @ 4:03 pm

ilounge-july-3.jpg
This week at iLounge: the big news of the week was the release of The Free iPod Book 2.2, an expanded and updated version of the book recommended by The Wall Street Journal’s Walt Mossberg as “the free manual on getting the most from your iPod.” Over 200 pages worth of iPod goodness — shopping, troubleshooting, and more — are inside the hassle-free PDF download.

Hit the jump for the rest of the iPod goodness.

Still squinting at the video iPod’s 2.5″ screen? With iLuv’s i1055, shown in an exclusive First Look this week, you can add a widescreen 7-incher — plus stereo speakers, a battery pack, DVD player (!) and 48-button remote. You’ll be surprised at how good iPod videos can look on a real display.

If you don’t choke on the price, you might like this one: Kensington’s figured out a way to wirelessly display iPod artist and track info on your car stereo’s RDS text screen. Though its results will vary based on the sophistication of your car — ironically, the cheaper the display, the better it’s likely to look — the company’s new $90 RDS FM Transmitter/Car Charger is now shown in First Looks.

Big reviews: Apple + Nike score big with the Nike+iPod Sport Kit (iLounge rating: A-) but stumble with the Nike+ Sport Armband for iPod nano (iLounge rating: C-); Sima Products does alright with its iPod-to-iPod copying device Hitch (iLounge rating: C+), and iLuv rocks the boombox market with its affordable, portable i552 AM/FM Radio and Docking Speaker System (iLounge rating: A-).

In iNews this week, Apple announced it shipped over 8.1 million iPods during its third quarter, and later discussed a ton of iPod and iTunes topics during a financial conference call. Meanwhile, a new Apple patent application details a touch-screen interface for an iPod, and code in the latest iPod firmware update hints at future iPhone and messaging features. Finally, an Apple executive said he wants consumers to move from third-party iPod auto accessories to iPod-enabled automobiles, and Apple offers a selection of refurbished iPods that come with a free bonus accessory as an added incentive.

iPodweek - The Best of iLounge

Filed under: Best of, ilounge, ipodweek, roundups — Gizmodo @ 5:36 pm

ilounge-july-2.jpgThis week at iLounge: It turned into sports and fitness week on iLounge with the major launch of the Nike+iPod Sport Kit and Nike+ shoes and apparel, as well as the release of Speck's new Active Sport Armband and iSkin's DuoBand Dual Layer Armband and Protector. Our First Look at the Nike+iPod kit has extensive details on nearly every aspect of the running solution, from what's in the box to synchronizing with the Nikeplus.com website after your run. We also get our hands on the Hitch USB transfer device, which allows users to copy music and video from one iPod to another, without using a computer.

In iPod and iTunes news this week, speculation mounts that the "true" video iPod will be delayed until 2007, while other reports mention possible aluminum or magnesium enclosures for the next generation iPod nano. Plus, Delta Entertainment announced a collection of DVD titles that come with an extra iPod video-ready disc; iPod FM transmitters are set to become legal in the UK this Fall; and the digital music market and podcasting see strong growth.
