Samsung announces S60-powered SGH-i520

Nokia gets the lion’s share of the attention when it comes to the S60 platform and Symbian generally — perhaps rightfully so, considering they ship far more Symbian-based smartphones than any other vendor — but Samsung would like to politely remind everyone that they’re an S60 licensee, too. Their latest effort, the SGH-i520 slider, had its coming-out party this week at the Symbian Smartphone Show, and the spec sheet looks to give Nokia’s E- and N-series multimedia powerhouses an honest-to-goodness run for their money. The typical 2-megapixel camera and QVGA display aside, the i520 packs an HSDPA radio — something no released Nokia handset has managed to do; granted, the N95 does it, but we’ve got a little wait ahead of us for that monster. Lucky owners also get a microSD slot should they find the 45MB of usable storage a bit light, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, and a front-facing VGA shooter for those ever-popular video calls. Per protocol, it doesn’t seem that a US launch is in the works, but one can never be sure; stranger things have happened.

Vodafone’s Treo 750v gets an actual launch date

Filed under:

Now that we know the Treo 750 is poised for a Cingular release here in the US, we’re kind of over Vodafone’s version of this Windows Mobile 5 smartphone, but because we’ve got mad love for our European audience, we’ll keep covering it until they pry us kicking and screaming from our keyboards. Following numerous spy shots, reviews, and announcements regarding this device, there’s pretty much nothing that we don’t know about its feature set — quad-band GSM with UMTS, 300MHz CPU, 240 x 240 pixel screen, Bluetooth 1.2, miniSD expansion, 1.3 megapixel camera, and of course, still no WiFi — but despite all the interest, a solid release date has yet to be announced. Well, until now that is, as Vodafone has finally updated its UK site to list an October 2nd launch (why do we feel like this thing has been “launched” like ten times already?), with that same vague pricing window of “free to £127.66 ($242.90).” So, congratulations dear friends across the pond, you’ll have your gadget-loving hands all over the 750v in a few short days; us Americans, meanwhile, are just preparing ourselves to go through the whole dog-and-pony show of leaks, rumors, and false starts all over again.

Palm Treo 750v gets official

Thanks to countless leaks over the last several months, one of the most anticlimactic smartphone releases in history has finally gone official. Palm has issued all the juicy details on their UK site, and… well, it’s pretty much exactly what we expected: internal antenna, quadband GSM with triband UMTS (lending itself to a Cingular release), and a superbly average 1.3-megapixel cam sitting atop Windows Mobile 5 Pocket PC Phone Edition. The phone is still apparently in the pre-order phase, though Vodafone’s site is showing a price “From Free to £127.66″ (about $240) depending on contract — not bad considering what you get, but whether similar pricing will carry over to Cingular is another question entirely.

BenQ-Siemens adds trio of handsets

Filed under: 3g, BenqMobile, benq, benq mobile, benq-siemens, candybar, e71, e81, sl91, slider, umts — Chris Ziegler @ 9:43 am

In the event Europeans are still unhappy with their selection of 3G-capable devices, BenQ’s trying to come to the rescue this week, showing their UMTS SL91 slider and E81 candybar — along with the more pedestrian EDGE-only E71. All three handsets share some visual cues, sporting glossy black finishes and rounded lines, though the similarities mostly end there; potentially most interesting of the three is the SL91, a Chocolate-esque, “mysteriously opaque” device featuring the LG phone’s now-trademark disappearing navigation keys. Besides UMTS, the SL91 goes big with a 3.2-megapixel camera, QVGA display, and FM radio with RDS. One notch down the food chain is the E81, giving up some screen real estate with its 220 x 176 display and trading 3.2 megapixels for the more standard 1.3, but mercifully hanging on to the microSD slot. Finally, the EDGE-only E71 steps back up to QVGA, but the real draw here should be its “innovative non-stick coating” that promises to hide fingerprints on its shiny exterior. All three phones look to drop before the year’s out, though odds are slim Americans are invited to the party. That’s alright, BenQ; we prefer our phones good and smudged with fingerprints, anyway.

Moto surprises with 3G MotoRAZR MAXX

Filed under: MotoRazr, MotorazrMaxx, RAZR, edge, hsdpa, maxx, motorazr maxx, motorola, umts, v3x — Paul Miller @ 8:45 pm

Filed under:

Well, it’s not an absolute surprise, we saw this model as an unnamed prototype floating around last month, but Motorola just officially took the wraps off of their new MotoRAZR MAXX, a purtiful followup to the V3x. At a mere 0.6-inches thick, the MAXX shaves a whole 0.2-inches off of the V3x. The new phone also adds EDGE and HSDPA in addition to the already speedy UMTS, making this handset much more likely to show up in the EDGE-friendly USA. Moto has included Bluetooth 2.0+ Enhanced Data Rate, 50MB of internal storage, a microSD slot for expansion and the snazzy glass front and touch sensitive music controls of launch buddy KRZR K1m. The 2.2-inch QVGA display is, of course, always welcome, as are the 2.0 megapixel and VGA cameras the phone has. Also, as a nice embellishment on the lot, the phone’s details glow blue when receiving a call. Motorola is planning to release the phone to unknown markets and carriers in this half of 2006, our fingers are duly crossed.

Nokia releases N73 and N93 “multimedia computers”

Even if you're a die-hard Palm or Windows Mobile fan, it's hard to deny the appeal of Nokia's N-series lineup of S60-powered "multimedia computers," whose connectivity and imaging options are some of the best you can find on a smartphone today. As promised, the company has just officially released both the N73 (pictured, bottom) and N93 (pictured, top) handsets that we've been following for some time, and although you probably won't be able to pick them up through traditional channels, we know that they'll definitely be available at your local Nokia retail outlet. As a quick refresher, both of the phones (we know, we know, we're not supposed to call them phones) are highlighted by 3.2 megapixel, Zeiss lens-equipped cameras, with the N93 throwing in a 3x optical zoom and support for 30fps VGA video. Both models also feature high-res 2.4-inch displays, Bluetooth radios, a miniSD slot for image capture or rocking tunes, and quad-band GSM plus 3G UMTS capability. On top of all these attractive features, the N93 also gives you built-in WiFi with UPnP functionality, video out for replaying your precious memories on a big screen, and what sounds like better-than-average in-camera editing. We're still gonna stick with our current smartphones for now, but these models are so hot that we're seriously reconsidering our snobby insistence on rocking those handy QWERTY thumboards at all times.

New Treo “coming soon” on Vodafone

Vodafone UK's gone live with a site promising a WM5-based Treo "coming soon" -- we know very little here, but let's put the pieces of the puzzle together. First, we know that Palm's done with the 650 in Europe. Second, we know that it won't be a CDMA 700w, it'll have to be GSM. Third, they're saying the device will be "using Vodafone's high-speed network." We'll let you draw your own conclusions, but we're thinking antenna-free UMTS version of the 700w.

LG CU500 launches Saturday on Cingular

The handset itself might not be anything spectacular in terms of specification, but one aspect of LG's CU500 clamshell makes it extraordinarily interesting: it's North America's first retail HSDPA handset. A little private investigation on our part (meaning we called a few stores) reveals that the phone officially drops in Cingular's 3G markets tomorrow, but several persistent individuals have managed to get stores in the Boston and Atlanta areas to part with their units a day early. HowardForums has a rather active thread heralding the news, which you can read after you give your local store a call, eh?

Palm announces WM5-powered Treo for Vodafone

So Palm has officially announced one of those three Treos we were promised at the end of last year, and just as we expected, this Windows Mobile 5 AKU2-powered model will be sold exclusively overseas. Unfortunately the company neglected to include a detailed spec sheet in its press release — more information will be available closer to the as-yet-unspecified launch date — so all we really know at this point is that it’s destined for Vodafone’s 3G UMTS network in several European countries. Also unclear is how this model relates to other upcoming Treos we’ve seen under such codenames as Hollywood, Lowrider, Nitro, and Lennon — we sure wish Palm would be a little more forthcoming with its product roadmaps. As usual, though, you can always count on us to bring you every little bit of Treo news we get our hands on, even if Palm and friends don’t give us much help putting it in context.

Up close and personal with the Qtek 9600 (Hermes)

Filed under: 3g, 9600, Pocket PC, PocketPc, WindowsMobile, hermes, htc, qtek, review, tytn, umts, windows mobile, wizard, wm5 — Chris Ziegler @ 11:16 am

French site PPCReviews has managed to score a Qtek-branded copy of the hotly anticipated HTC Hermes, and thanks to some decent Google translation, we’ve managed to take away quite a bit from the thorough review. Many folks are expecting the Hermes to be a superstar compared to its already good older brother, the Wizard, but PPCReviews is a bit bummed out about the switch from miniSD to microSD expansion, the lackluster battery performance, rather portly 175 grams, and lack of true VGA display. Of course, we all know the good stuff the Hermes brings to the table by now, and the review ends on a happy note, confirming that the 3G and fresh 400MHz Samsung core work wonders for the device. Pardon the interruption, everyone; you can go back to incessantly refreshing Expansys’ TyTN product page every few minutes in the hope of an early shipment.

Nokia N93 gets put through its paces

Filed under: NSeries, camera, cameraphone, clamshell, flip, gsm, megapixel, n series, n-series, n93, nokia, s60, symbian, umts — Chris Ziegler @ 12:53 pm

With S60 3rd Edition, UMTS, a 3.2 megapixel camera with optical zoom, WiFi, miniSD slot, and QVGA display, Nokia's N93 dual-pivot clamshell pretty much does it all -- at the cost of some considerable bulk, that is. Mobile-review had a chance to spend some quality time with the beast, and if you can get past the portly 188 grams of mass in your pocket, they appear to come away liking the device for all that it does. As flimsy as it may look, we're told the stalk connecting the display to the remainder of the phone is rock-solid: "Even if you shake the phone with all your strength, there is no way the halves will move towards each other." Triband GSM plus UMTS 2100 make the N93 a tough sell in the States, but everyone else seeking out a worthy N90 replacement can expect Nokia's latest superphone to drop this month for around €600 ($765).

HTC TyTN (Hermes) gets a possible ship date

Filed under: Pocket PC, PocketPc, WindowsMobile, hermes, hsdpa, htc, umts, windows mobile, wm5 — Chris Ziegler @ 1:37 pm

We may not be able to pronounce the name of HTC's self-branded variant of the Hermes -- TyTN -- but we will be able to rock one toward the end of this month, if Expansys' UK site is to be trusted. Expansys is showing an alleged July 17 availability date for the device, and while our European friends are already well-acquainted with its imminent availability in several flavors of carrier, this could be the only shot Americans have at 1900MHz UMTS smartphone goodness until it officially drops on Cingular in the fall (knock on wood). The Hermes is physically a dead ringer for the Wizard it replaces, but mercifully upgrades the woefully underclocked OMAP to a 400MHz Samsung piece, adds a second camera for video calling, and bumps the primary to 2 megapixels. The price north of $1,000 USD might seem stratospheric to most of us, but we suspect we can find a few Wizard-toting folks willing to shed it to get themselves out of EDGE purgatory.

Cingular: we’re kinda okay with VoIP, we guess

Filed under: 3g, VoIP, cingular, hsdpa, ims, umts — Chris Ziegler @ 2:09 pm

Cingular is going to let you roll VoIP over its 3G network, but they don't have to like it. That's the message Cingular CTO Kristin Rinne effectively gave this week, saying that they don't explicitly have a problem with folks running VoIP through their UMTS pipeline, but they'd rather have QoS and billing systems in place (naturally) beforehand. Since they don't, and data is data, let the Skypeing begin on that all-you-can-eat HSDPA plan of yours -- just don't be surprised if they suddenly try to nickel-and-dime you once their IMS implementation gets going.

Panasonic rolls Cingular HSDPA for ToughBook CF-18

Filed under: 3g, cf-18, cingular, hsdpa, panasonic, toughbook, umts — Ryan Block @ 6:21 am

It’s a rough world out there, and no one should be without 3G nowadays — especially not anyone whose job requires them to carry a Panasonic CF-18, one of their iron-clad ToughBook class laptops strong enough to take a bullet (ok, maybe not really). Looks like Panny landed a deal with Cingular to incorporate HSDPA into the CF-18 by way of a Novatel Wireless Expedite EU730 UMTS / HSDPA card, presumably a Mini PCI add-on. Nope, it’s not the first shot the ToughBook has had at having 3G in its lifetime — and we assume it won’t be the last — but this does add Panasonic to the short list of HSDPA laptop makers, as well as to the growing list of companies offering help in the way of laptop-internal 3G while remaining relatively (though never entirely) carrier agnostic.

Q fans, good news: it’ll cost $50 and have UMTS by 2007

Filed under: Q, cingular, moto, motorola, umts, verizon — Ryan Block @ 11:26 pm
For those Q fans in the audience, we've got some good news (especially if you haven't made the jump yet because that $200 price point is still a little high, or because you just can't bear the thought of switching to Verizon). Apparently Ron Garriques, Moto's Executive Vice President, Mobile Devices Business, told Bear Sterns that the Q's sales performance can be compared to the steep, successful initial launch of the RAZR, and that they not only hope to drop the price to $50 after carrier subsidy by the end of 2006, but they'll be launching a UMTS version when Verizon's exclusivity contract on the device ends (as we've been expecting). Yeah, that'd be the same UMTS version that it was supposed to be around from the get go. Still, we're assuming that exclusivity will last a good half year (quite literally a gadget lifetime to wait for us), after which time the UMTS Q will head to some mysterious, unknown network. Guess Ron wasn't too firm a believer in Moto's supposedly newly adopted announce-when-you-ship methodology, eh?

Cingular halts sale of 3G phones in 2G regions

Filed under: CingularVideo, cingular, cingular video, cu320, umts, zx10 — Chris Ziegler @ 12:14 am

Built it, and they will come — even if they’re not invited. That’s the message Cingular is hearing loud and clear in some of its EDGE-only areas, where UMTS hasn’t yet launched but their mediocre first round of 3G handsets were being sold nonetheless. Curious consumers in the EDGE boondocks have picked up the handsets and discovered Cingular Video, a service that Cingular has specifically designed for UMTS speeds, leading to a barrage of support calls for absurdly poor frame rates. Cingular, apparently oblivious that this might happen, has reversed their decision to launch 3G handsets ahead of the network build-out and is offering an extended return policy through June 30 for customers who’ve already picked one up. To our untrained eyes, watching CNN Headline News at insane compression rates on a sub-QVGA display looks about as good at 5 fps as it does at 20 fps, but kudos to Cingular for trying to do the right thing.

NEC e373 passes FCC muster

Filed under: LowEnd, clamshell, italy, low end, nec, tim, umts — Chris Ziegler @ 9:14 am

As we all know, FCC approval means virtually nothing for a phone’s chances of seeing a US release, but we can dare to dream. The 900/1800/1900 tri-band NEC e373, just released on Italian carrier TIM, treads some moderately uncharted territory as a truly low-end UMTS clamshell, lacking an external display and expansion slot. To boot, the useless-for-anything-but-video-calling VGA camera and 32MB of internal memory make the phone all but useless as a multimedia device, but yeah, we have a soft spot in our hearts for hot-looking 3G clamshells, so we’re going to give the e373 a mulligan this time.

DoCoMo bringing BlackBerry to Japan

Having already conquered the US and much of Europe, Canada's most famous contribution to consumer electronics is poised to take over yet another Asian market, when the ubiquitous BlackBerry hits phone-mad Japan this fall. Coming hot on the heels of KT Powertel's introduction of the 7100i in South Korea, wireless giant NTT DoCoMo has announced that it is partnering with BlackBerry-maker RIM to offer customers GSM / WCMDA "worldphone" versions of the addictive handhelds -- which is yet another step towards the carrier's commitment of having an all-GSM-enabled lineup within the next two years. Besides the traditional push email functionality that we've come to know and love, nothing much is known about the specifics of these upcoming foreign models, like how the pocket-sized BlackBerries will manage to pack in the thousands of keys necessary to represent all those Japanese glyphs.

Sierra AirCard 875 brings 3.6Mbps HSDPA

Filed under: 875, SierraAircard875, aircard, edge, hsdpa, sierra, sierra aircard 875, umts — Paul Miller @ 12:32 pm

We’re a bit miffed that this new AirCard from Sierra isn’t coming in an ExpressCard form, especially now that good number of the major laptop manufacturers (Dell, Lenovo and Apple to name a few) are sporting ExpressCard slots in their newer models, but HSDPA is HSDPA and we’re glad to see it all the same. The device — a bump to last year’s 860 — supports 3.6Mbps (theoretical) speeds, which is as fast as anybody is doing it right now, and should provide for more than a few WiFi shaming connections to those with the cash and the infrastructure to enjoy it. Along with tri-band HSDPA and UMTS, the 875 can do quad-band EDGE/GPRS, so road warriors beware: you’re about to run out of excuses for lost connectivity — we’d think this one over if we were you. No word on price or initial availability.

HTC Hermes becomes “XDA trion” for O2 Germany

Filed under: 3g, WindowsMobile, gsm, hermes, hsdpa, htc, o2, phone, umts, wcdma, wm2005 — Chris Ziegler @ 5:38 pm

It appears that one of the year's more hotly-anticipated Windows Mobile devices is getting ready to roll on O2 -- in Deutschland, that is. We've already seen the HTC Hermes all dolled up in O2 livery, and now it's gone live on O2 Germany's website as the "O2 XDA trion." While the T-Mobile variant's Samsung processor brings 300MHz to the table, O2 seems to be feeding the hungry masses with a bonus 100MHz and a pair of extra buttons around the d-pad, both welcome additions. The device takes 3G baby steps for now by launching with UMTS, but an upgrade to HSDPA is promised. Expected to drop sometime in July.

Motorola Q is set for launch next week

Filed under: MotorolaQ, Q, Sprint, WindowsMobile, hsdpa, motorola, motorola q, umts, verizon, windows mobile — Paul Miller @ 3:45 pm

Remember a ways back when we told you that the Motorola Q was due for May 22nd? Well that might not have been so far off after all. Turns out Motorola has just announced that they will be releasing the Q "next week," a week which turns out to include May 22nd among its numbered days. The EV-DO phone will be out first for Verizon and Sprint, but there should be a Cingular UMTS version out by the end of the year -- a bit earlier than they previously stated -- and possibly even a HSDPA version if we're really lucky. They're billing the Q as a "BlackBerry killer," which is fine, but we're just glad they finally realised that releasing a product is an important part of the BlackBerry killing process.

T-Mobile releases HSDPA PC card in the UK

T-Mobile has just released a PC card for UK subscribers that will allow them to hop on the company’s HSDPA network when it goes live, and will also work immediately to access UMTS-speed data services. The purchase of a “web’n'walk” card, which has a quad-band radio for international — including US — use, also includes twelve free months of WiFi access at any of T-Mob’s UK Hotspots. Customers subscribing to 18 or 24 month data contracts at 17 pounds/month will receive the card for free, but need to keep an eye on their usage, as the fine print states that T-Mobile will warn, and possibly even shut off, customers who download more than 2GB of data in a given billing period.

UK T-Mobile sez no to VoIP

Filed under: WebNWalk, t-mobile, tos, umts, web n walk — Ryan Block @ 8:20 am

Got UK T-Mobile’s Web ‘n’ Walk Professional laptop 3G service? Well, you better beware about your data use — even though you’re paying a flat rate fee for your service, you’re likely to cross the TOS line by going over 2GB of data per month, especially if you use two services they specifically cite in prohibition: VoIP and IM. VoIP, well, that’s something that due to latency issues you probably won’t consume a lot of on your 3G connection, but IM? We’re having a hard time imagining why they wouldn’t want you instant messaging with your laptop — how about web browsing, want to axe that too? So be aware that if the “use of Voice over Internet Protocol and Messaging over Internet Protocol [over the service]… is detected, T-Mobile may terminate all contracts with the customer and disconnect any SIM cards and/or Web ‘n’ Walk cards from the T-Mobile network.” Guess that’s better than being charged insane prices per byte of “overage” on flat data services like we’ve heard of happening in the US, but don’t say we didn’t warn you.
