Sprint fumbles, fries Fusics with faulty firmware

Filed under:

We hate to see a nifty technology like FOTA (firmware over-the-air) getting such a bad rap early on in the game, but in the same breath, our mommies always told us “measure twice, cut once” — and we think that’s an imminently appropriate adage in the aftermath of Sprint’s recent attempt to re-up Fusics already in the field. It seems the firmware update, pushed just a couple days ago to customers’ handsets, quickly and efficiently bricked each and every one of them. The whole situation is a full order of magnitude more frightening than Nokia’s similar experience with the E70, seeing how Nokia’s update was optional and at least required the user to manually perform the upgrade. Naturally, Sprint’s pulled the bogus firmware and is offering a free replacement to affected customers, but it’s still a shame that they’ve cost Fusic owners a trip to the Sprint Store.

So, where the hell are our Core 2 Duo MacBooks?

Filed under: Apple,Core2Duo,MacbookPro,core 2 duo,macbook,macbook pro,release,rumor,upgrade — Ryan Block @ 9:05 am

Filed under:

The funny thing that happened when Apple decided to make the switch to Intel was they couldn’t any longer espouse the merits of their typically non-standard processor architectures as, um, apples and oranges with PCs. In other words, Apple had to start keeping up with the jonses in a very flat, discernible, and easily quantifiable way: PC speed benchmarks (which were made even easier with Boot Camp). So yeah, you could say we find it a little odd that since being announced in late July (i.e. two months in real-life time, or six years in Engadget time) and shipping in August, we’ve yet to see only one prominent manufacturer neglect to launch some Core 2 Duo laptops of their own. So it’s on shaky faith we tell you that the latest in an already irritatingly long line of C2D MacBook (Pro) rumors has Cupertino’s entire line of laptops done with the damned upgrades, and company just waiting on the marketing department to line ‘em up and knock ‘em out. Of course, it would be market-suicide if they didn’t launch these before the holiday season (unless they wanted to bundle them with Vista that is — we kid!), so don’t be surprised if you wake up to some new Apple laptops any day now.

[Thanks, Chris]

23-inch Core 2 Duo iMac rumors begin swirling

Filed under:

You know how the industry loves a good Apple rumor or two (or ten, or a thousand), but when you start getting some synchronicity between the menagerie of rumor sites out there, it’s bound to rise to the top. Today’s hit: September will see the entry of a 23-inch iMac, as well as a line revamp for the all-in-ones over to Merom Core 2 Duo mobile (i.e. not desktop) processors. (Our staff of twelve interns gave it a quick mock right upstairs there.) We’ve seen our fair share of Merom launches this week, so it stands to reason that if the spec bump is on target, then the MacBook Pro may get that upgrade as well — certainly Apple wouldn’t want to feel left behind now that they’re competing mano-a-mano with all those PC manufacturers, now would they? Oh, and while we’re at it, we’ll tack on one more for ya: at the same time, reports are starting to come in regarding sly Mac mini upgrades from Core Solo to Core Duo processors, perhaps in anticipation of bumping those specs up a little, too. Apple has indeed been known to upgrade to their customers’ pleasant surprise (see: MacBook Pros going up with nary a word, for example), but then again perhaps they’re just out of the Core Solo parts, and needed to get those units out the door.

MacBook Pro with Core 2 Duo rumors persist

Filed under: Apple,Core2Duo,MacbookPro,core 2 duo,macbook,macbook pro,merom,rumor,upgrade — Ryan Block @ 4:10 pm

Filed under:

If there’s anything we’ve learned about Apple, it’s that when Stevie J. takes the stage, expect the unexpected. This time, unfortunately, the unexpected took the form of significantly fewer real announcements than had previously been prognosticated by man; still no iPhone (figures), still no iTunes movie support (same); neither were very surprising, but we were really taken aback when Apple didn’t give their MacBook Pros some Core 2 Duo processor upgrades, being that every other laptop manufacturer has either done it or is lining it up. So, be that as it may, it should come as no surprise that the Commercial Times is supposedly reporting Asustek and Quanta are prepping to ship somewhere to the tune of 200,000-300,000 MacBook Pros and MacBooks with Core 2 Duo as of next month. Will it happen? Well, Apple is due for fall consumer product announcements (last year’s was in October), so this is one we’re not counting out.

Apple bumps MacBooks, including “MacBook Ultimate”

Filed under:

Looks like Apple's tacked on two new out-of-box MacBook configs supposedly available in retail locations, well, immediately. AppleInsider is reporting a new white version gaining equal footing with its darker counterpart with a 2GHz Core Duo, as well as 1GB RAM, and an 80GB drive for $1449 -- which is what you'd pay to configure a stock 1.83GHz WhiteBook with the above options (thus the processor upgrade is free). Apple is apparently still keeping the margin on the BlackBook though, with the "MacBook Ultimate," your regular 2GHz BlackBook with 1GB of RAM (instead of the stock 512MB) for -- you guessed it -- the same $100 you'd pay to configure it yourself online, thus topping it out at $1599.

O2 releases AKU2 update for Xda Atom

The folks over at O2 have been busy little beavers today, first releasing the HTC Tornado-based Xda IQ, and now posting the Windows Mobile 5.0 AKU update for Xda Atom owners to download. We're sure that we don't need to repeat the advantages of AKU2 again, but since our contracts stipulate that we rehash the deets ad infinitum, we'll remind you that this upgrade adds BlackBerry-like push email through the Messaging & Security Feature Pack (MSFP) along with an improved wireless connection manager, quicker screen orientation switches, and other minor enhancements. Atom owners also get a few device-specific bug fixes with the new firmware, most notably the elimination of the "heartbeat noise" that had apparently plagued some versions of the FM tuner app. For now you'll need your handset's serial number registered with O2 in order to access the download, but it'll probably be just a matter of time before it becomes available on one of the popular cellphone forums.

Sony’s FJ, FE, and SZ get spec bumps

Look like
Sony’s giving their European laptop releases some spec bumps to fend off the summer slump. The most interesting is the
FE line‘s new FE20, with Sony’s new 2nd gen
X-black display (aka XBRITE, some of the nicest laptop displays
money can buy), which finally addresses its most typical complaint with an anti-reflective surface layer, and also
throws in some extra brightness with a dual lamp backlight; the href="http://www.engadget.com/2005/09/15/sonys-vaio-fj-laptop/">FJ line‘s new FJ3 gets a dual layer DVD burner, 1GB
DDR2 SDRAM, and a 100GB drive; the SZ series
gets the SZ2 with the upgrades are the least exciting, and from what we can tell they’ll just have a version with a
2.16GHz T2600 Core Duo chip, which is already available as an upgrade on the Sony Style configurator. Keep an eye out
for these in the states sometime in the near future (with different names, of course).

Windows Vista to be delayed yet again?

hspace="4" border="0" align="right" src="http://www.engadget.com/media/2006/03/3060000000054243.jpg" alt="" />Given
Microsoft’s recent woes — the company seems to be under attack by everyone from Wall Street analysts to Google — the
last thing the company needs is a rumor that Windows Vista won’t be available by its recently href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/21/vista-delayed-until-early-2007/">revised January launch date. But that’s
what Redmond is getting hit with today, in the form of a research note from Gartner, which predicts a delay until at
least June for the consumer version of the program. According to Gartner, the new OS is “too complex” to be
ready by January. Microsoft has responded by saying that Vista is on target to make the launch. Gartner also says that
a delay until the spring is “nowhere as bad” as the slip from fall to January, which will result in a
Vista-free holiday season. Somehow, we suspect that beleaguered PC makers hoping for a sales bump from Vista upgrades
might have a little trouble taking solace from that argument.

AKU2 for Treo 700w available for download again

Just as suddenly as it disappeared from the Palm website, the AKU2 update for Windows Mobile 5.0-powered Verizon Treo 700ws has reappeared for download, giving Palm customers access to the push email that they've been so eagerly awaiting. According to Brighthand, Palm pulled the original version of the firmware because of a "glitch" that made some users unable to update. Besides the Messaging and Security Feature Pack that enables synchronization with Exchange servers, the Treo 700w Updater 1.10 also includes some minor tweaks to the device's image and video application, and a new interface for the wireless connection manager.
