Q fans, good news: it’ll cost $50 and have UMTS by 2007

For those Q fans in the audience, we've got some good news (especially if you haven't made the jump yet because that $200 price point is still a little high, or because you just can't bear the thought of switching to Verizon). Apparently Ron Garriques, Moto's Executive Vice President, Mobile Devices Business, told Bear Sterns that the Q's sales performance can be compared to the steep, successful initial launch of the RAZR, and that they not only hope to drop the price to $50 after carrier subsidy by the end of 2006, but they'll be launching a UMTS version when Verizon's exclusivity contract on the device ends (as we've been expecting). Yeah, that'd be the same UMTS version that it was supposed to be around from the get go. Still, we're assuming that exclusivity will last a good half year (quite literally a gadget lifetime to wait for us), after which time the UMTS Q will head to some mysterious, unknown network. Guess Ron wasn't too firm a believer in Moto's supposedly newly adopted announce-when-you-ship methodology, eh?

Verizon’s Chaperone offers invisible fence to parents

Filed under:

We’re still trying to get used to the idea of 8 year-olds toting cellphones, but operators have embraced their new clientele, developing phones and services tailored to their needs and the needs of their parental units. Verizon’s young’un offering, the GPS-enabled LG Migo, will be the first device to operate with their Chaperone service, which launches on Monday. For $10 a month, Chaperone lets a curious parent check on their child’s location, and for $20, Verizon can send alerts when the child crosses pre-set boundaries. We’re hoping the Migo doesn’t deliver a shock when an unsuspecting kid moves past their boundary, but it does look a little like a stun gun, does it not?

Let there be Q: day one at Motorola’s Destination Q

Filed under: DestinationQ,Pop-upStore,Q,destination q,motorola,pop-up store,verizon — Chris Ziegler @ 4:30 am

When word got out that Motorola’s “pop-up store” on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile would be called “Destination Q,” we all knew it would be focused on their newest pride and joy, the Q. Perhaps we didn’t realize just how focused it would be.

Destination Q fills a portion of the space formerly occupied by the Terra Museum of American Art, located at 666 N. Michigan Avenue. It’s an attractive facility both inside and out and was, in our opinion, a great place for Motorola to set up shop. Sadly, the property is too hot — the building is slated for demolition next year to make room for residences.

Curious onlookers mingle outside the store. The joint was pretty dead by the time we rolled in around lunchtime, but apparently, the real action was in the morning when Moto gave away a Q every five minutes for two hours. Rumor has it there was a line stretched down the street of screaming fanatics hoping to get a free Q, or at the very least, a glimpse of Ed Zander. It would’ve been nifty if they had shot the free Qs out of cannons into the gathered throng.

This is what the would-be Q owner sees when he or she first walks in. You immediately get the sense that the place was thrown together in some haste, but that would fall right into Moto’s “pop-up store” strategy. The public portion of the store consists of the first floor alone, which isn’t terribly big. There are additional facilities on the upper floors for conferences and private events. The Motorola staff was energetic, friendly, largely knowledgeable, and they could be found in every corner of the facility; we avoided the Verizon reps, on the other hand, at all costs. For what it’s worth, we were told that although no future pop-up stores are planned, Motorola’s ready to plan and open one quickly wherever and whenever it makes sense to do so — like when Nokia decides to open a shop in your hometown, for example.

The concept of Destination Q is to showcase a different aspect of the Q’s capabilities at different kiosks, like this one. All the Qs were on, activated, and accessible to the average Joe coming in off the street.

Like we said, Motorola was not shy about this store existing solely to showcase the Q, and they were everywhere. Yes, this is a wall of Qs. And yes, they are all operational.

Bluetooth is a major theme here. Motorola is showcasing every Bluetooth headset they manufacture, and they were quick to point out the Q’s A2DP support, as well.

Not an XPRT with vowels, apparently, but this gentleman knew his stuff about the Q. He let it slip that AKU2 is still in testing, but yes — it’s definitely on its way.

Most of the staff were sporting slightly different Qs with light silver bezels (as opposed to VZW’s dark bezels) that we were told were pre-production. We had hypothesized that they might be GSM units (gasp!), but we caught one of them without the battery installed and there was nary a SIM slot to be seen.

An entire kiosk was devoted to the Q’s media capabilities — video in particular. Orb (pictured) and Sling players were loaded on several of the units here. Video was mostly clipping along at 9 fps while we watched, but it spiked up to 15 fps on several occasions. We’re told that the average user can expect 15-17 fps, and to be fair, we have no idea what a hundred in-use Qs in close proximity do to EV-DO speeds.

You can use this, uh, “Brand X” MPEG recorder to get video to your Q. We thought the lack of capitalization on “motorola” was interesting here.

Drop the kiddies off in front of Destination Q’s posh Xbox 360 setup while you sign away the next two years of your life to Verizon.

Centrino laptops and promotional materials were strewn about; we were told that the tie-in with Intel would be strong at Destination Q, with a future co-branded event of some sort in the works.

Motorola’s other CDMA phones are afterthoughts here, but they’re available for sale along with the Q. Their GSM contingent, on the other hand, was missing in action.

The Motorola staff were too wrapped up in their Qs to pay much attention to a grubby Engadget editor. Can’t say we blame them. Thanks for the hospitality, guys!

(Cue Jaws theme.) It’s coming, Motorola. Right down the street. We can’t wait to watch the sparks fly.

Motorola V3m available on Verizon

This release may not have us salivating uncontrollably like the Q did, but for what it’s worth, the V3m is a marginal upgrade to the outgoing V3c it replaces, giving you a MicroSD slot to rock the new inbuilt music player — and not much else. Step right up, folks; the V3m is available now for $149.99 with contract — but as we’ve learned, availability and price could vary nonsensically in your area.

Verizon drops LG VX8300

The replacement for one of Verizon’s first EV-DO V CAST phones, the VX8100, the VX8300 trades a MiniSD slot for MicroSD and adds Verizon’s notoriously sketchy flavor of Bluetooth (although DUN is officially supported, so maybe we’re okay here). That’s about it — the camera remains the same at 1.3 megapixels, and the VX8100′s silver case is traded for a more subdued black. Available immediately for $99 with contract.

Verizon first to hit FCC’s 95 percent standard for E-911

Filed under: VerizonWireless,e-911,fcc,verizon,verizon wireless — Paul Miller @ 3:39 am

It's been a long time coming, but Verizon Wireless has just announced that they've matched the FCC's 95 percent requirement of users with E-911 capable handsets, making them the first national carrier to complete a handset-based E-911 rollout. The actual deadline, through many delays, was set for December 31, 2005, but Verizon told the FCC it'd take them until about June to finish up. The FCC still hasn't granted a waiver to the request, but Verizon is in much better shape than Sprint-Nextel and Alltel, who have both stated it will take them a while longer to hit 95 percent.

Motorola V3m RAZR musicphone available for Verizon

Filed under: RAZR,RazrV3m,motorola,phone,razr v3m,v cast,v3c,v3m,vcast,verizon — Paul Miller @ 4:41 pm

Last time we checked in on Motorola's V3m -- a slight music-centric update to the EV-DO V3c -- we weren't quite sure if this was going to Verizon or Sprint, but it looks like Verizon won out in the end, and are now offering the handset for $150 with a 2-year contract. The phone features a microSD slot for music and video storage, and a 1.3 megapixel camera, but there doesn't seem to be a lot else new going on here. Music-wise, the phone is designed to work with Verizon's V Cast music and video services, but we're not sure of codec support beyond those downloads, though MP3 seems a given and PlaysForSure is likely.

Unpacking the Motorola Q

Check it, we just out our hands on a brand new Motorola Q yesterday evening and we figured we'd snap a few pics of the unpacking ritual.

Sadly, they went for the standard black-and-red packaging you'll get with any run-of-the-mill Verizon handset. You'd think they'd steal a page from Apple or iRiver or Helio's playbook and realize that good packaging (usually) makes people feel like they've just bought something special.

Anyway, we haven't had a ton of time to play with it yet, but we've already noticed some improvements over the pre-production model we, uh, obtained a couple of months ago. For starters, the D-pad is way better. You can't even compare 'em. The QWERTY keyboard is a little better than it was before. It's still not perfect, but it's gotten better on every successive version of the Q we've handled over the past 10 months or so (it'd be nice to compare this final version with the original prototype they showed off last year to see how it's evolved). The other major difference we've noticed so far is in the responsiveness of the UI, it's definitely snappier than it was before.

Sprint gets last laugh, shipping 700p before VZW

We've been really tossed every which way on this "who's shipping the 700p first" debacle, but it looks like Sprint wins in the end. Even though Verizon just "announced" 700p availability, their phones are shipping shipping in 3-4 weeks, while Sprint is still on track for the end of this month. These ship dates are from Palm itself, and we think they'd be in the know if anyone is, so we're going to put our necks out one more time and proclaim Sprint as the (probable) first to ship the 700p.

Motorola and Verizon announce Q: $199

We were (then weren’t) expecting it any day now, but it looks like Motorola and Verizon have finally done the deed and made the Q official. Final specs include EV-DO (duh), Bluetooth 1.2, stereo speakers, Pocket Office, and the rest of the spread we’ve come to know all to well about this thing. The best part, however, is that you’ll be able to order online starting May 31 or buy in store June 5th for a paltry $199 (after $100 instant rebate and two year plan, of course), with EV-DO enabled data plans to run between $80 and $170 per month, depending on your usage. And don’t you even think about tethering this thing, mister.

Palm Treo 700p now available from Verizon

Filed under: 700p,palm,PalmOs,VerizonWireless,palm os,treo,verizon,verizon wireless — Thomas Ricker @ 12:00 am
Ok Treo fans, best get a-clickin' because Verizon is first from the gate with the launch of the Palm Treo 700p. Just don't freak when you see the VZW asking price of $399 $499, mkay? They'll be knockin' off an additional hundie once the total is tallied in hopes of making you feel special about your lack of WiFi support. Now hold tight if you're just gagging for Sprint's service -- we expect they'll be getting the lead-out any day now.

“Official” WM5 updater for Samsung i730 leaked

This is just getting out of hand. After waiting a million billion years for Samsung to release their promised Windows Mobile 5.0 update from Windows Mobile 2003 for their SCH-i730, a few users managed to nab a build of the OS from a beta tester and have been humming along happily for the past couple of months. Now a forum user has found the download link to the “official” updater, and users hungering for legitimacy or who never updated in the first place are updating their i730s as we speak. Turns out the build is incredibly similar, slows down the phone just as much as before, and works fine when updating from 2003 and even the 5.0 rip (with a bit of tweaking on the latter). Seems another score for the i730 users, we just don’t know why Verizon/Samsung won’t just release the update already.

[Thanks, Jon]

Nokia 6315i musicphone approved by FCC

It looks like Pantech and Nokia have been hanging out again, but this time Nokia will be the one dropping the rebranded handset, an EV-DO-sporting model for Verizon known as the 6315i (and formerly known as the PN-E330). Phone Scoop discovered this recent approval while enjoying the FCC website, and reports back that it features a 1.3 megapixel camera, microSD slot, and Bluetooth, along with dedicated external music controls. We'll let you know when we find out a release date and some pricing info for this fairly feature-filled flip phone.

Palm Treo 700p approved by FCC

As much as we'd like to blame other parties for the long wait for Palm's Treo 700p (and we will, we will), there's one source for at least some of the wait: the FCC. According to public filings, the smartphone just cleared the government agency, paving the way for its impending rollout. Of course, Palm did file a confidentiality request with the FCC, so we're not entirely clear exactly when this baby got the thumbs up, but the important thing is that it did, which means nothing (short of mobs at Sprint and Verizon's stores) should stand in your way if you're planning on picking one up very soon.

Verizon : Motorola Q not launching next week

Now that Verizon has started boasting of its exclusive deal to sell the Motorola Q (at least until Sprint pumps out their version), what’s VZW’s next move? Why, to deny that they smartphone is coming out anytime soon, of course. According to Brighthand, a Verizon spokesman stated that the company does not have a “launch event scheduled for next week.” Hey, we’ll parse that one a bit. Maybe Verizon’s shipping it without an “event.” Or maybe the spokesman was out of the loop (wouldn’t be the first time). Or, more likely, he was just doing his job, issuing a denial in an effort to maintain some sense of suspense, and the Q will indeed show up next week, with some kind of event. But just in case, don’t start camping out in front of VZW stores just yet, m’kay?

Verizon getting exclusive on Moto Q

We’ve been hearing for some time now that the Motorola Q would be coming to Verizon and Sprint first, with versions for other carriers out later in the year. Now, it looks like Verizon may have scored a coup, and shut Sprint out of that initial launch. According to a teaser that’s now up on Verizon’s site, the long-awaited smartphone will be available “exclusively from Verizon Wireless.” We don’t know how long that exclusive is going to last; we still expect Sprint to roll out a version pretty quickly. In the meantime, though, if you absolutely must get your Q next week, it looks like you now know where to go.

CDMA Motorola SLVR coming to Verizon this summer

Motorola SLVR
We all know that Moto can be a little stingy with the CDMA love (how long did it take for them to release a CDMA RAZR?), but a reliable source just passed along the news that they'll be rolling out a CDMA version of the SLVR sometime this summer. Verizon has first dibs, but there's no word yet on what colors they'll be offering or whether or not their version of the SLVR will sport iTunes-compatibility like the one that's currently available from Cingular (which is pictured above). Then again, it is Verizon we're talking about here, so we'd guess that the iTunes thing probably isn't happening.

Verizon Treo 700p: $400 with 2-year contract

If you were hoping to play Sprint and Verizon off of each other and try to get a better deal on the Treo 700p, the jig is up. Verizon's pricing is now out, and the company is charging the same price as Sprint for the new Palm-based smartphone: $400 (with a two-year contract, that is). Calling plans with unlimited data start at $80 a month, and if you want to use your Treo as an EV-DO modem with your laptop (which we suspect you just might), be prepared to add an extra $15 a month. And, no, it still doesn't have WiFi.
